Typical older style hotel but with fabulous service. The breakfast included in the room was a great value and the staff was helpful and accommodating at every turn. The apartment suite I shared with friends was roomy and comfortable. Having a nice well priced pub across the street was perfect. The wifi was a little spotty in places would be my only downside.

Room tip: apartment suite had 2 queen beds plus a full sized pull out and a kitchen

Went down to Port Clinton, OH for my husband’s interview and found this hotel on hotels.com. The hotel is small so I do not have to walk around too much to find our room. The staff really nice. They also allow me and my daughter to stay a bit longer while we wait for my husband. Very warming and loveable place. The place is old but they really taking care of it. The minus part is the seagull in the morning. Rather than that, our stay is really good.

This past weekend 4 couples individually booked this hotel upon my advice & after reading their current website. We were looking forward to our planned driving route, with multiple stops, on our way northwest from the SW Cleveland suburbs. After arriving at 2:45 pm for check-in (following our 7 hour trip) we were all looking forward to drinks in the bar and a great dinner in the 1812 restaurant. Imagine our dismay at finding neither bar or restaurant of any kind in the property! Questions went unanswered except for giving us a list of bars that were within walking distance. The group now chose to split up (definitely not the plan) and when I found the 1812 Restaurant where 4 of us had a fabulous dinner, I learned that they had been forced to vacate the Island House over 18 months prior and that 2 failed restaurants had been there since (now just empty rooms).
Although we were given a passable breakfast and the rooms were pleasant (of tight) there is not enough atmosphere without a quality bar & restaurant within their walls. We will not return.

Ava,

Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review on TripAdvisor.
Your input is a very important part in helping us improve future stays for you and other guests visiting in the future.
Per your comments, we are working very hard to update our website as well as get a restaurant and bar back in the facility.
We strive to make this a home away from home for guests and to hear you are upset with your stay does not sit well with us. Again thank you and we hope you reconsider and visit us again in the future.

Signed,
Heather

We booked a room at the Island House because of the "supposed" amenities and because it was right across the street from Jet Express. We asked several questions of Island Hotel about Jet express. Upon arrival we were given coupons for Jet Express urns out it only runs on weekends and we were there Wed. Through Fri.. We were prepared to dine in one of their 2 restaurants the first evening we got in. Turns out the 2 restaurants and full bar at the hotel no longer exit as advertised. In fact it was pointed out to us that one restaurant was now a storage area. We were given a recommendation for a restaurant about 5 miles away and given directions. When we got there they were CLOSED until the following evening. The next morning We went to the front desk to ask about a restaurant on Put-In-Bay. We were given the hours and told it was open all day. So we went to catch the ferry to Put-In-Bay (paid for 2 tickets and for parking). When we got to the Island we had to take a taxi to the restaurant because the ferry drops off at the opposite end of the Island than the Jet Express. When we got there it was CLOSED for the season. We paid for the taxi and ferry back to Port Clinton..

When we went down for breakfast the first morning there were no hard boiled eggs or batter for waffles and pancake griddles that were available on the counter. They told it was only on weekends. The bagels and pastry had been sitting out all night and were too stale to eat (I noticed them out the night before when we scouted around after checking in). They said pancakes and waffles were only for the weekends. We left hungry and searched for a restaurant for breakfast.

The room - Yes quite small, but we didn't intend to spend much time there so OK. On the way to the room we noticed some walls dented and dinged. Other walls had unpainted spackle. There was a broken fixture in the bathroom which could have easily been removed. OOPS! Someone forgot to wipe out the refrigerator and there was black gooey stuff on the front of one of the shelves. There were cob webs on the light fixture right above the bed - you couldn't ignore it. The stripping under the door to the room was coming off by about 1/3, letting light from the hallway into the room. It looked like new carpet and bed spread. The bathroom had been remodeled with nice looking, albeit sticky, tile. One night I killed long red bug with lots of legs Ugh!

While the reception staff was very pleasant they weren't well informed. I recommend that first front counter staff confirm all recommended restaurants by phone ( not internet). I suggest they update their own website to reflect actual amenities available.
