The monument is a nice opportunity to introduce kids to the area's history. The park service does a nice job of getting visitors up to the top for a great view of Lake Erie. Also nearby is a visitors center with additional information about area history and a nicely stocked gift shop!!

Going to the top was worthwhile. First, you learn something about an important U.S. event, right there. Second, the view is amazing; go up on a clear day. A wonderful investment of 90 minutes.

During our trip to Put-in-Bay, we had the chance to make it up to the Perry's Victory Memorial on two separate occasions. We were not disappointed. The views from the top are breathtakingly beautiful--on a clear day, you can see all the way to mainland Canada as well as Cedar Point.
For a shorter wait in line, go early in the morning or 2 hours before they close. Elevator to the top takes a minute or two, and the park rangers are very knowledgeable about the history of the monument. An adult ticket is $3.00, and kids 15 and under are free. When you purchase a ticket, it is good for unlimited visits for 6 more days. Binoculars are available on the viewing platform and do not miss the visitors center on the grounds--air conditioned and educational.

Cost, as of June 2014, was $3/adult, cash only. We went on a Friday and had no wait for the elevator up to the top, and it wasn't crowded at all. It was a clear day and we could easily see Canada from the top. The park rangers had a few pairs of binoculars available for anyone to use, and were very helpful in answering any questions about the area. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone afraid of heights, but the view is great. The park ranger mentioned that the day before, one of the island's nesting Bald Eagles was flying around in the area.

The memorial is slightly high than the Statue of Liberty and has some very cool history. I'm afraid of heights, but the wall around the viewing deck was thick and tall enough to make me feel safe. There are signs in four places showing you what part of the country you are looking at. At a couple of places, you can see Canada. It's only $3/person, but if you are a veteran or military person with an America the Beautiful pass it's free for you and up to 3 others.
