“Kalahari is Better”
Reviewed 10 June 2014

The place is decent, but I would definitely recommend Kalahari Resort more. The staff was poor and the rooms look old. We did have fun at the waterpark and have a great sleep though. It is an okay place, just not great.

I took my son and his 3 friends for his graduation celebration. Even though they are 18 they still had so much fun in the waterpark. The facility is clean, employees very friendly (David, Alyssa, and Jacob were 3 that made our visit special). Early access to the park is awesome. We got to ride the millennium, top thrill dragster and Maverick a few times w/i that hour. Just a great fun place if you like roller coasters :)

This was a great trip, I will take it again. Everything was clean, everyone was friendly and the water park was great fun. Basically I have no complaints, even satisfied with the price of stay, not the food, drinks etc but I expected over pricing. Lol. Also I thought it was a little of an inconvenience as a smoker to have to go down to 1st floor to smoke, especially considering there is no accommodations for smokers, some seating & shade would be nice. No problems smoking out side, but would like to sit, relax, drink coffee and smoke. But even with that small issues, loved my stay. Great birthday present for my fiancée.

We decided to indulge in an impromptu mini vacation with our three children and chose Castaway Bay as our destination. I had great hope for this Cedar Point "resort", but, unfortunately, it was a terrible disappointment.

To begin with, this place is nothing but a tacky, overpriced tourist trap. The entire structure is very run-down and there is very little outward appeal. When we entered the hotel, we were greeted with Calypso music, and staff attired in bright tropical shirts. The lobby was large with an enormous shipwrecked pirate ship in its center; there was also a lot of wooden island furniture scattered about and animatronic birds that made quite a racket--to really set the mood and make a guest feel that they were stranded on an "island paradise". The cheesy decor was actually kind of fun, but it did very little to mask the overall shabbiness of the place. The walls are in dire need of fresh paint and the floors could use a good cleaning.

There were two gift shops off the lobby: Pearl's, which offered swim wear, and Nick Knacks, which was filled with everything from snacks andagazines to tacky faux shell jewelry and Castaway Bay merchandise. We browsed Nick Knacks, and found things to be quite overpriced, which we expected. The gentleman overseeing the shop was very friendly.

Just off the lobby is a pier with views of the bay, which was very nice, but if you have small children, be very cautious, as there are NO safety railings along the pier that overlooks the bay; a very serious hazard, as far as I'm concerned.

Even though we informed the front desk that we were a family of five, we were given a Starfish room (room 456) with two double beds...there was no way we could sleep comfortably in such a room! We were not issued a bay view room, either, so the view from our little screened in balcony was terrible.

I was so disappointed in the overall appearance and cleanliness of our room. It was NOT clean! The trash had not been emptied and the in-room coffee pot was stuffed with a dried up old filter; waster was leaking from somewhere and began to run over the table, soaking one of my bags! The microwave and mini fridge were also dirty, and the carpets were in dire need of shampooing. Surprisingly, aside from the overflowing trash can, the bathroom was spotless. The sliding glass door leading to our balcony was faulty; we had problems opening it and then re- locking it.

The entire hotel is just dim and shabby; the halls seemed fairly clean, but have the aroma of mustiness, due to so much wet water traffic. The elevator we used was atrocious; it smelled terrible, and twice, it didn't move from the first floor; the door simply kept opening and letting us out on the same floor! The hotel was also very noisy; there never seemed to be a staff member on hand to assist. All very disappointing.

Our children wanted to have a treat from the snack bar that was advertised all over the hotel; it was closed. Starbucks coffee was advertised in the coffee shop, and when my husband tried to purchase two cups, he was told that they were out of coffee. No coffee...in a coffee shop...hmmm...

My children did enjoy the indoor water park; it was set up to resemble a tropical beach island, and that was fun. This entire area was spotless, as were the pools, and there was ample seating, plenty of fresh towels, and an abundance of life jackets, which guests WILL be required to wear if they are less than 48 inches tall or weak swimmers. The waterfalls and fountains were nice touches, and there really was something for everyone--my husband and sons loved the more adventurous slides and tubes while my daughter and I played in the toddler pool. We all enjoyed the wave pool.

The indoor waster park was well-staffed with lifeguards, and although I was glad to see them take their jobs so seriously, they were almost militant about things, which somewhat impeded our fun. My 9-year-old son, who is a true water baby and expert swimmer, was told that he was not allowed to swim on his stomach or float because it "scares the lifeguards". I'm not certain what they consider "appropriate swimming"; perhaps the group of teens that were karate kicking the waves and knocking toddlers over in the wave pool?

The rules of the water park are odd; people can run, but anyone over 48 inches tall must be accompanied by a child to use a specific slide, yet toddlers are permitted on the thrill slides, and anyone--even children--who is 48 inches or taller can enter the water park without adult supervision.

The noise levels are high and it is a far from relaxing enviroent, but if you enjoy the water, this indoor park will be to your liking.

The hotel's arcade was very popular with our children. It was very large and very clean with a wide selection of games to choose from; tokens were placed on debit cards, and like any arcade, they were pricey, winning ticket payouts were low, and the prizes were cheap and gaudy. The staff was young and unfriendly, and the credit card machine was down, which was inconvenient, but the kids still had a lot of fun.

Unfortunately, due to the condition of our room, we chose not to spend the night; we enjoyed the water park and arcade and left after the attractions closed.

Final notes on Castaway Bay: it is very overpriced for what you receive; be prepared to pay tourist-y prices. They do not honor any form of military discount, and, regardless of age, anyone in your party who is 48 inches or taller, will pay adult price.

I do love the location, though. Sandusky is a nice town, and I like the atmosphere; tourist trap shops are nestled among more well known chain stores and restaurants, which is fun and gives a great deal of options to visitors. If you're in the area, look for the neon orange restaurant printed with the words--MEXICAN FOOD--and nothing more because it's pretty ambushing, but perhaps you'll want to steer clear of Castaway Bay.

Me, my husband, son, and niece spent the weekend in Sandusky. We went to Put-in-Bay and to Cedar Point. We stayed in a room with a view of the bay. The view of the bay was nice. The room was very out dated (the bedding, television, and carpet). Although the decor was out dated, the room was clean. The kids, ages 8 and 9 enjoyed the water park. The best part of staying at the hotel for us was getting into Cedar Point an hour before the park opened. We would stay at the hotel again because we loved Cedar Point.

A group of us took our kids and they had a blast & so did the adults. Rooms were clean, service was great. Even replaced one of our lost wristbands at no cost. None of us wanted to leave, We'll definitely be back!

Overall the experience was not bad, however the room decor is very outdated (circa 1980's) and we had issues with the shower. Our stay overlapped with a school trip, so the hotel was very loud and crowded. This is not the hotel's fualt, but perhaps they could accomodate non-school patrons in a separate area. The staff that we interacted with were very nice and accomodating. The breakfast buffet was hot and delicious. My only complaints are the outdated room, and the shower. We could not get a happy medium with the tempature, it either scalded you or was freezing. The waterpark itself was fine, but I don't have any other experience to compare it to.

Room Tip: Choose a room overlooking the bay
