“Great View of the Bend area”

Reviewed 4 May 2014

I drove to the top of Pilot Butte on my off-time while in the Bend area on business. You get a great view of the Bend area ... when the clouds permit. And you can't beat the price!

While up there, I could see for many miles thru the clear high desert air. And I could see rain showers in several directions that day. Quite a change from the flat lands back east.

But having seen the butte, I now need to see Lava Butte. It must be quite a site.

To get to Pilot Butte, from the center of Bend, take Rt 20 east. A mile or so east of Rt 97 you will make a left turn to go into the park and up the butte. No trailers are allowed to be driven up the road to the butte ... it's a narrow road.

See it!

It rises above Bend like a giant anthill, teeming with multi-colored ants. Taking a closer look, however, the ants are actually people of all ages, sizes, and colors, many with canine companions. Some of the people wear backpacks or carry hand weights; others push toddlers in strollers. All of them, along with their dogs, walk, run, jog, or slog up and down one of the two trails leading to the 500-foot summit of Pilot Butte.

Walking the Butte is a friendly activity—those going down smile and say something encouraging to those going up, and those going up nod and grunt something back. Dogs stop and sniff one another regardless of which direction they’re headed. Reaching the top, everyone catches their breath, and some take a moment to admire the 360-degree view of the city and the Cascade peaks in the distance. Then it’s down the trail with a promise to return, as the ants go marching on.

It gets heavily used and for good reason. The views are excellent, the trails take you to the top or around the base. The improvements in the last decade are great. Test your walking or running time to the top against the times posted at the parking lot or just enjoy a leisurely walk and the clean air. There are great views of the Cascade Volcanos in the west and the High Desert Buttes to the east.

You ride up and you get a great view. You don't spend a lot of time there and it's free. So there is no reason not to go if you are in Bend.
