Lot's of great, easy to understand info and displays about local geology and history.
This is a federal fee area, so remember to have your national parks pass

If you want to drive to the top of the butte, you need a pass from the main gate to have a scheduled time. We needed a good hike and we hiked from the main parking area to the top, around, and then back down. The reward was at the top and seeing the geology that is this area's namesake. Museum is pretty cool too. Take a picnic break here well; lot's of shade near the visitor center (not at the top of the butte).

This was our first stop when we got to Bend. What a good thing to do first. They were very helpful and gave us a lot of good tips and advice! There was quite a lot of info for that part of OR.

Time your trip to be there for the 11 or 1:30 presentation by the park ranger. Ranger George did a great job describing the area and had samples of the various rocks created by the volcano. The visitors center also offers a nice, informative movie and have excellent displays. Be sure to take a drive up the butte. Great views! We skipped the lava trail but took a 1/2 mile hike to Benham Falls (basically a rapids) that was easy. Then see the lava river cave! Amazing walk into a tube formed by molten lava 7700 years ago! We spent the whole day doing lava land activities and didn't regret it! Fascinating!

This attraction was an unexpected pleasure just south of Bend! Make sure upon entering you pick up your pass to go up the Butte! Walk all the trails and just soak up the experience! Just amazing! We missed the movie but loved the drive up the Butte and the view! Great experience! Another item crossed off my bucket list!
