McMenamins Old St. Francis School
Ranked #13 of 44 Hotels in Bend
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 12 September 2011

We stayed at Old St. Francis School for one night. The room was clean and the staff very helpful, although since it's an old property there was the typical "old house smell" in most of the hotel. Our room had an air purifier, so it wasn't a problem in the room but more noticable elsewhere.
It's located right in downtown Bend, so the location is excellent. You can order breakfast delivered to your room, although we didn't take advantage of that. The soaking pool was very nice, sort of like a giant-sized hot tub.
We didn't stay very long or on the weekend, but the only warning I have is that some rooms are very close to the outside seating, so noise could be an issue since the bar is open until midnight or later.

Staying at a McMenamins takes a hotel stay to another level. For one thing, their locations mostly were not hotels in their first incarnations, instead first existing as schools or poorhouses. The words "fun" and "cool" and "different" are uttered as you admire the quirky art and find your room identified by a name instead of a number. It's more like a mini "resort" that offers interesting additions to the more mundane sleepover.

The St. Francis is located right on the main cute tourist section of Bend giving patrons easy access to shops, other restaurants and the nearby park. The hotel is small with a restaurant and bar, toasty warm soaking pool (dimly lit at night) and movie theatre.

Because of each hotels history, staying at a McMenamin's is a different experience from other hotel stays. All the rooms at the St. Francis have private bathrooms and TVs (not so at other locations) and include free movie theatre tickets and access to the soaking pool. I found the other patrons to be very friendly. (Why not? It's all so fun!) There is a coffee maker in the room (with good coffee) but no fridge. Everything else you have to grab from the pub, which is just steps from your door. There is a parking lot behind the hotel, immediately adjacent to the hotel hallway.

If you just need a spot to crash for the night that may include a mini-fridge too, pay the lower rate and skip the St. Francis. If you want your hotel to be part of the Bend experience and will enjoy the pub and amenities, spend a night at the St. Francis. I plan to return!

The special building has hotel rooms, restaurant, bar and a cinema. Good, big rooms. We really can recommend it when you want something else than the usual Holiday Inns, Hiltons, Best Westerns etc.

I had originally found the McMenamins website while looking for a hotel in Portland, but ended up staying at the one in Bend, instead. This place was REALLY cool. We got in around 7:30, checked in and then elected to go grab a drink in the bar with the band playing, then got in line to watch a movie at the property. We watched Bridesmaids, which you can eat dinner in the theatre. The movie was free since we were staying there. After that, we walked over to the "cigar bar" to sit outside. Then we grabbed a S'more at the bar that stays open the latest. Everything was really neat. The room was clean and comfortable and had a large shower. The mocha scone and berry pastry the next morning were perfect! (If you like REAL scones, get one here!) If you are a former Catholic school kid (like I am) - don't worry, the nuns aren't around! You get to eat, drink and have a good time without fear of a ruler! :)

This is a really fun place to be, and it offers so much to the guests. Actually, we did not stay at the hotel, just went into the bar and had dinner there, but did wander around the first floor and look in on the swimming pool. Everyhting was done tastefully and with much love for detail, and wveryhting is spic-and-span, spotlessly clean. The food is very good, and the bar has a very nice atmosphere with tasteful decorations, and a very wide choice of beverages of all description. Well worth a visit, even if only for a drink.

We stayed here two nites, the service was outstanding. The staff went out of their way to make sure we were taken care of. The rooms are clean, quite and very cozy. As the other reviews have stated this was once a school but it has been totaly re-done. The soaking pool is amazing, after a long day of hiking it was very relaxing. They provide complementery robes for you in the rooms for the pool. The hotel is located downtown within walking distance to shopping, bars, and restaurants. The staff in their restaurant were great and the food was outstanding. All the bakery goods are made on the property and are sooo good!..We plan on staying here again during the winter, make sure you go to their other bar across their parking lot, they have the fires going at nite which make it very cozy. They have room service but we didn't use it, however, they do provide you with fresh ground coffee for your coffee maker in the morning at your door. Don't forget to try their brewed Hammerhead beer, ask for it because it's not on the menu. They are not AAA rated, for some unknown reason, so don't let that deter you from staying here.
