“Nice view plus whale remains”
Reviewed 1 October 2013

Chetco Point was a pleasant surprise. I had not heard of it but read an article in the newspaper about the whale remains. The helpful people at the Brookings Best Western gave me a map and told me how to get there. It was a nice point of land behind the wastewater treatment plant. Pretty views.

But what I really wanted to see was the whale skeleton. And I found it with no trouble

A little smelly at start for sure! But -----. Great walk up short trail up huge rocks that give a great view of area. Good place for
" non walkers" as it's very short ( maybe 15 min)

“Visually stunning but it stinks.”
Reviewed 25 July 2013

You have to walk by the sewage treatment plant on the way out to the point. There is also a pulp or paper mill close by. When we went, it was very stinky throughout the park. Harris beach is a bit prettier and didn't stink.

“Don't let the Waste Water Treatment Plant deter you...”
Reviewed 5 July 2013

The parking lot is deceiving....it is right in front of the Waste Water Treatment Plant. The trailhead is directly to the right of the parking lot. We got more than we expected (as we hadn't read the local newspapers) when we came upon the deceased sperm whale washed up on the small beach. That's not something you see everyday, but it certainly was interesting. The state is planning to allow the sperm whale to decay naturally as the sand is too shallow to bury the whale where it lies. For a while, at any rate, take this added attraction into account when you choose to visit Chetco Point.

“Great views with scary drop-offs”
Reviewed 2 July 2013

This is an easy hike with some steep parts. I usually start from Macklyn Cove beach rather than walk the sidewalks in town. Walking the beach does require a low tide so it's easier to climb over rocks to access a steep climb up the side of a cliff. Once up the side of the cliff, you will be ready to climb uphill again on a trail that leads to the point. On top the trail is narrow and in spring, summer and fall almost overgrown with vegetation thigh high. The views are outstanding made even more beautiful because of all the wave action crashing against rocks. If you leave the trail and walk to the edges, the drop-offs are straight down into the turbulent sea. On my last hike to the point, a dead 40 ft. sperm whale had washed a shore. Never know what you might see at Chetco point.
