We like to go to the Tea Room. Their breakfast is great, and when strawberries are in season, the strawberry topped waffles are the best! The manger and staff are very friendly, and their desserts are wonderful. There are also at least 1000 tea pots to look at!!

The Tea Room is open. It was closed for a bit, but has reopened. I believe it is new ownership.

The food is generally of the Better Homes and Gardens Cookbook type... plain, solid American cuisine. Decor is family restaurant style. Windows are lined with teapots, and a few other ceramics are near the front end. Homemade seasonal patterned cloth tablecloths were covered in clear flexible plastic.

We had sandwiches, soup, and pie. Soups change daily. Our choice was Cheddar Broccoli or Hamburger Vegetable. We both got the Hamburger Vegetable. It was essentially a dilute chili with veggies added. Since the Tea Room also offers chili, I thought this was a bit odd. But it was certainly a respectable soup, flavorful and hearty. Sandwiches were nothing to write home about.

But, I suppose the Tea Room is really about the pies. We were seated near the pie case and had a view of the action, as pie after pie left the case for the kitchen to be cut. For a small place the variety was astonishing. Coconut Cream, Banana Cream, Lemon Meringue, Cherry, Pecan, Chocolate Cream and maybe a few more to boot. Pies were fresh baked, American standard, served large (maybe 5 slices to a pie?). Flavor was good in our slice of Coconut Cream.

On the whole, not really my kind of place, but there is no denying that this is quintessential working town Brookings. The number of folk enjoying themselves here was astonishing.

As of mid-July this fine dining establishment is closed for business. We will all miss their great lunches and deserts.
