If your vacation aim is to remove yourself from the "rat race and relax with only the basic necessities then Camp Sherman and the Metolius River Lodges (MRL) fit the bill. Discovered by my wife and I relatively recently, for about 7 years now we have made it an annual destination. Nestled within the forest and immediately upon the banks of the Metolius River, you are less than a 20 minute drive from the hustle and bustle of Sisters, Oregon, where, if you must, the "rat race" can be found. At the lodges you will find clean rooms, fully applianced kitchens, comfortable bathrooms and bedrooms, and woodburning fireplaces. Modern electronic conveniences like radios, DVD's, and TV's are unavailable. Again, if you must have it, the Camp Sherman store offers wi-fi availability just a short walk downstream.
We have stayed during all seasons except the dead of winter and have another trip reserved for the middle of June. Our first year saw us fortunate enough to stay in the signature cabin, Salmonfly, while our next 4 trips put us at the far upriver end in Dragonfly where the river actually ran under the corner of the bedroom. That uniqueness has since been repaired, but leave your window open at night for a truly soothing and mesmerizing night's rest. This year we move next door to stay in Damsel. Plenty of wood is available to take the chill off those cool mountain nights. You will find the staff area oriented, friendly, pleasant, and helpful at all times. I place MRL at the top of my list for places to just get away to relax.
Nearby activities include fly fishing, trail walking along the river, hiking up Black Butte, golfing less than 10 minutes away, lake fishing, river rafting, dude ranches, sunbathing, skiing, horseback riding, shopping, etc.
Don't confuse the MRL with the Metolius River Resort which is directly across the river. If a stepback in time is what you relish, stay with the Metolius River Lodges.
