We ate for our second time at the Driftwood Restaurant. It was a great dining experience. There appeared to be many locals in the restaurant. The friendly and forthright waitress suggested the Dungeness Crab dinner along with very good local wine advice. The Dungeness Crab is local to the Oregon Coast. It was prepared simply with beure blanc and placed on pieces of baguette. The dinner came with soup or salad and we both chose the Clam Chowder which was excellent. There was also a choice of rice, potato, or vegetable. It did seem odd that the dinner would not include both a starch and a vegetable for the $28 price.

Plus we had an excellent seafood lunch sitting in the sun watching all the activities in town. I liked the table fireplace, thought it was a nice touch. Our server was good and had great suggestions on the local beers.

We are traveling south on Hwy 101 from Astoria, Or. to California camping in a 5th wheel. This trip is a "clam chowder" taste fest which began in Astoria and continued in Hammond, Warrenton, and Seaside. We are spending 3 nites in Cannon Beach and are very much enjoying this little town. We tasted clam chowder at 3 Cannon Beach restaurants before going to the Driftwood Restaurant for their happy hour. Their happy hour food menu has a number of $5 items including a clam chowder sourdough bread bowl and "hog wings". Wow!! Both were just great. The clam chowder is the best we have tasted so far - served stove hot, not too many potatoes, very tender clams, and the broth was a very nice consistancy - not too thiick but not soupy, either. And then the Hog Wings - like a 1.5" long baby back rib without the fat - the meat was crisp on the outside but tender on the inside. Unique! You will have to come to the Driftwood Restaurant to find out exactly what cut of pork Hog Wings are - we're not going to tell. Will definitely return to this terrific restaurant.

We stopped for lunch here after a long walk on the beach, so our appetites were in high gear. We ordered the Wedge Salad ($9.95), the Halibut in Dill Sauce ($17.95) and the French Dip (10.95). Only the sandwich was of an appropriate portion size, we felt. Although the halibut fillet was REALLY delicious, it was a bit small for the price. Same for the Wedge Salad. Service was crisp and no nonsense. We enjoyed the flowers in the flower box outside our window. Restrooms are rustic and required a wait. It's location in the middle of town is a draw; just be prepared for a lopsided portion-to-price experience.
