I always stop at one of the many pubs when I stay in Portland. Great atmosphere to meet friends and enjoy a great beer & meal.

I find it funny that 'all' the McMenamin's are rated together vs. individual... Cause they are all the same! I've been to many of the McMenamin pubs around the Portland Metro area. Although I'm not a fan of their food and drink offerings, I do enjoy their whimsical atmosphere's and decor. That being said, the decor and theming efforts are a giant waste when you observe the carbon copy menus of uneatable food found in every pub. The disappointment doesn't stop there! You really want to like these pubs! I love the concept of salad and sandwich or burger or whatever, but the food is SO cheap and below even pedestrian palate quality, it's always a disappointment. Mediocrity is the norm in regard to food and drink across the board. It's just 'food' to eat food. Food for people who want to eat cause they're hungry, not for people who enjoy food. One person told me, "It's stoner food!" NOPE! If I had the munchies this would not be satisfying! As a reader I'm sure you want examples? Here ya go:

Beer is one their staple products. Made either in house or at a local BIGGER pub or estate. In a state known for quality beer, McM's beer is like an afterthought or maybe a mistake. Usually tasting disjointed and inconsistent at best! Beer names change frequently but mostly as a marketing ploy as the beers are only changed slightly.

Wine. Their wine has improved, but still hits below the belt. White's are better than Red's. I could go through their entire catalog, but there's no point... lets' just divide it into red/white. ;-)

Their Syrah is the supposed claim to fame in the red category. I've found them thin, watery and tasting like musty dirt. Even fruit in the nose was lacking...year after year. All the other reds follow suit of being thin and lacking in depth.

White's fare a little better with varietal notes that closer fit within the taste profiles.

Distillates. The only shining star in the entire McMenamin kingdom is the drastically improved in-house distillates. Now, if they can figure a way to sell in "sample form" vs. strictly saying they don't offer such a thing.... many would be happy. Also a McM trademark.... they're not user friendly.

Food. Well.... You could make it all better at home and you'd probably buy better ingredients to make it with! I don't care what your financial situation, you could fabricate a better product. Burgers are greasy and flavorless. Buns are sweet and taste as mass produced as McDonald's. Fries are consistently disgustingly greasy. If ya can't produce a simple frie, throw in your apron! Sandwiches are made with cheap lunch meats or products. That about sums up a typical McM's menu. Throw in some forgettable UN-appetizing appetizers like 'Scoobie Snacks" or "Cajun Tots." Really!? They must be anticipating Grammer School children to be eating at thier pubs? Mini Corn dogs and Tater Tots with nasty Cajun spice on them?! That alone sets the picture of quality of food. Picture a giant industrial sized bag of frozen tater tots being ripped open and dumped into a vat of over-processed oil... That's it! You got it!

BTW..... Service is usually slow, uniformed and incompetent.

It was a REALY neat atmosphere, and much to do here. Hotel, bars (multiple), soaking room, smoking room, restaraunt, and theatre! Very cool place with great food. I don't drink, but was told the beers were good.

Great burgers and fries, My dining partner said hte gluten free bun was excellent, something she says is rare to find, that also tastes good. Of course they have an excellent selection of great beers being a brew pub chain. Service on our visits are generally pretty good, but that can also be inconsistent at this location and others. Good food, good atmosphere, free wifi, and a great selection of their signature beers. This place should be higher on the list!

We visited the Kennedy School for a movie. Great price of $3 plus the theater is wonderful with its couches and chairs. There was plenty of room to stretch your legs all the way out and tables to put your food items on.
