This place is beautiful. Be sure to bring your binoculars and stop at view point Simpson Reef where all the seals are on the rocks on Shell Island. It will be good to go when the day is clear as you will be able to get a better view of the many seals and sea lions on the rocks!!! An experience not to be missed....

Beautiful coastal drive from Coos Bay out to the parks. Plenty of hiking opportunities exist or stop along all the turnouts available, but do stop and check out the coastline with its unique rock formations. The botanical garden at Shore Acres was stunning with its huge array of roses and other non native flowers. While you are there go to the observation point take in the view and read up on the history. Quite interesting. Down the coast not far we were able to pull over and check out a colony of elephant seals-spectacular!

If you like tide pool exploring, this is the place to go. Bit of a steep hike but worth the effort. I like the hike (past the restrooms) on the N side of the park best.
Don't forget your camera, the views can be spectacular at the top of the park.

The Cape Arago area is arguably the most scenic part of the Oregon...or for that matter any coastline and is relatively undiscovered by the masses. One private RV campground and two public camping areas make it a great place to spend a week or two in the summer. Lots of trails for hiking and biking that wind along the steep cliffs overlooking the surf as it breaks on the rocks below. Whales, seals, sea lions and a variety of other wildlife are common to the area. The best part is that it is located about 4 miles off Hwy. 101 so few folks ever venture off the beaten path to see this beautiful area.

We did Cape Arago as a day trip from where we were staying in Florence, and we had time to stop at the dunes near Florence also. I've seen most of the Oregon coast, and Cape Arago is one of the most dramatic sections, I think. There are helpful volunteers in the park who will help identify the animals you can spot from the viewing areas. Nice place to stop for a picnic lunch.
