We were on a tour with about 40 other people and had a step on guide. Just a shot walk to an amazing view. Hard to believe this was even built. A must see if in the area.

We toured the gorge on our Harley and made a point to stop here after seeing it on TV a while back. The short drive off the highway to this location is well worth the view. This is a perfect place to enjoy the scenery of the gorge and to take pictures. Do stop here. Travel safe...

If you are touring the Columbia Gorge, taking friends on tours of the Columbia Gorge or near the Columbia Gorge, stop by the Vista House. It's located on Crown Point in Corbett, Oregon. The views of the mighty Columbia River are unparalleled!

When you drive or bike to this outstanding viewpoint, you will be amazed when you pop out at the top. The view is gorgeous. The building has outstanding architecture which is a surprise in this remote location. To me, coming from a technical family, the engineering feats described in the featured displays are simply amazing.

Vista House is a non-profit venture and run by volunteers. They are happy to accept donations.
The building was completed in 1918 as a scenic viewpoint and comfort station for those traveling the east/west paths along the Columbia River. It is also a memorial to Oregon Pioneers.

There is a plaque on the front of Vista House for Samuel Lancaster, the Highway Engineer for who supervised the Columbia River Highway project. He also had the idea for Vista House. The highway was an impressive feat. It is hard to imagine conceptualizing it and even harder to visualize the construction. Fortunately, there are photo displays detailing these achievements. The highway wasn't built by just blasting through the landscape. Sensitive care was taken to place the highway with as little damage to the environment as possible while maximizing the views. Take time to look at the displays on the lower level of Vista House to get an idea of how all of this was accomplished.

When inside the main rotunda of Vista House, don't forget to look up. There are portraits of Native Americans surrounding this outstanding ceiling fresco. Also, venture to the upper decks outside for the best photo opportunities.

Fun tip - there are businesses who rent bicycles for this ride and bring them to you in vans. This is a popular bicycle riding stop!

Necessary details - during late spring and summer, Vista House is open 9 am - 6 pm. Weather can cause closures so check before you go. There are snacks and a gift shop. The restrooms are beautiful with marble and brass fixtures. ADA accessible. About 20 minutes from PDX airport. Current info can be found at http://vistahouse.com. The website also contains a video about this venue.

The Vista House is a perfect little spot to catch an unspoiled view of the Columbia River Gorge. Parking can be tough, so you may have to walk a little bit. Once there, you'll enjoy beautiful scenery. Don't forget your camera!

Vista House is an great observatory at Crown Point. The historic Art Nouveau design serves as a memorial to Oregon pioneers and as a quaint comfort station. When is was completed in 1918, some Oregonians at the time derided it as the "$100,000 Outhouse" due to the costly marble interiors and brass fixtures that are even in the bathrooms. Beautiful windows feature opalescent glass in a simple tracery pattern. Ask for a guide to the Historic Columbia River Highway and Scenic Waterfalls. It is a great map for a scenic drive.
