We stayed at the Fish House for three nights in mid-August in our RV and used it as our base of explorations for Dayville and the John Day Fossil Beds area. The property is immaculately maintained by Mike, and he is friendly and welcoming. The site is located directly off the John Day Highway (26), and anything worth seeing in Dayville is within easy walking distance: the South Fork of the John Day River (take a walk down the creek and watch the crawdads scatter!), and the Dayville Mercantile, a great country store with an amazing assortment of groceries, camping equipment, antiques, knick-knacks, souvenirs, and plenty more.

The RV spots are all full-hookup, and other than the pads and the road, the entire place is covered in well-kept, green grass (a feat in and of itself, given we visited in the middle of 90-100 degree temperature, for which there was a complete ban on outdoor fires).

From the Fish House, the primary John Day Fossil Beds site, the Sheep Rock Unit, is a quick 15 minute drive through spectacular Picture Gorge. The Painted Hills unit is about an hour away through Mitchell, and the Clarno Unit is the most distant, but still worth the drive. If you plan to go to Clarno and back to Dayville, plan on a full day trip.

Arrived past check in time, Mike was very accommodating to make sure we made it to our choice of rooms in the cabin(duplex style). The owners have done an excellent job renovating property to make it a weekend gem of Eastern Oregon. Landscaping is immaculate!!!!!

What a find! A small but beautiful RV Park and Inn. Well appointed with full hookups, well maintained grass, shady mature trees, nicely kept restroom/showers. In the middle of town, close to a store and restaurant (for lunch and breakfast) but quiet. A very peaceful place, friendly people and close to the John Day Fossil Bed Interpretive Center, a must stop.

The cozy guest-house set back in a wide lawn was a quaint and comfortable way to spend an evening between trips to the fossil beds and painted hills. The room was very clean, and the bed very comfortable, and the refrigerator and free coffee was very welcome. It was great to sit out in the yard and have the owner's golden retrievers stop by for company. The RV spots were in the back of the yard at the end of a wide gravel driveway, but nobody was there during our stay. If you're in Dayville for the fossils or painted hills, or to bike around, the Fish House Inn isn't just the only place to stay, it's the best.

We had not been completely convinced by its website pictures and information when we booked but on arrival found the Salmon Room and its siting to be very pleasant indeed. The facilities in Dayville are limited but we certainly endorse the complimentary reviews about the Fish Inn that are on the Tripadvisor site. Well recommended!
