I was expecting more here because of the glowing reviews and the $250/night price tag.

Our first floor room looked like an inexpensive motel with an old coach, cheap bedding and a small old school bathroom. The only reason to come to this place is for the views of the ocean and the personal outdoor hot tubs. Unfortunately when we were there, it was too cold to partake in any outdoor bathing, so the $250/ night seemed ludicrious for the ammenities provided. I would have thought this was a good deal for maybe $150/night.

I also didn't like the breakfast that everyone raves about. It's perfect if you like sugary carbs -- muffins, cakes, cereal, fruit -- to start your morning. There was no eggs, no cheeses, nothing savory.

Other places we stayed on this trip in the same price range (Wildspring in Orford, Edgewater in Seattle) had much better rooms, service and food.

We are not the usual traveler to stay at Channel House, which clearly provides an intimate couples-friendly setting (fireplaces in living & bedrooms, hot tub on private deck). We were traveling with out 22 yr old son, but seek out small, upscale properties with great locations. We were turned away from a few properties elsewhere which could not / would not accommodate a 3rd person. Channel House was perfect with a comfortable sleeper sofa in living room. We all enjoyed the exquisite Pacific views from our suite and deck, and the view of the boats entering & leaving that ridiculously narrow harbor entrance! The suite (Cuckoo's Nest) had unobstructed views, all upscale amenities (only complaint was a wonderful shower with 2 heads, but both built for midgets!), and a terrific, expansive continental breakfast in a lovely room with more great ocean views. Only wish we could have stayed longer than the one night. Lovely property!

After years of seeing beautiful hot tub scenes overlooking the Pacific in Sunset magazine, we had an opportunity to experience the Channel House during a recent trip to the West Coast for a family reunion. Most of the TripAdvisor reviews were very positive and we looked forward to our visit. Our initial impression with the Admiral Suite was fantastic. The room had a nice layout, the fireplace and flat-screen were a definite plus and the bedroom, which was right on the corner of the top floor, had an unbelievable view out over the Pacific.

Our first stop was the jacuzzi on the deck, and we were pleased that there was plenty of hot water! Downside was that the deck was in full view of passers-by on the bridge adjacent to the inn so it was a bit tricky getting in without total exposure! Guests in the lower floors should be aware that they are in full view of us on the upper floors - not much privacy all around but redeemed by the incredible view of the Pacific, complete with whales.

A couple factors to take into account when selecting a room. Though the Admiral was probably the nicest room, it had some drawbacks. At night, there were some very high powered lights, lighting the channel. As a result, there really was no night in this room and it was impossible to see any stars. There was continual noise on the adjacent bridge. When the Coast Guard goes out in the middle of the night, there are loud warning horns in the channel and the boat has a siren. Overall, though the Admiral was a wonderful room from a view perspective during the day, it was noisy and bright at night ...

Many TripAdvisor members have commented positively on the breakfast. We found it adequate but overall lacking - maybe a step above Hampton Inn buffet, but didn't measure up to many other experiences at similar inns.

Trip Advisor members highlighted two places to eat. First was Tidal Raves. We really looked forward to this experience but were greatly disappointed. We wanted to have a couple glasses of wine, enjoy the great view and have some lighter fare. We did not have a reservation but figured we could find a spot at the bar. WRONG ... no bar. People were sitting on uncomforatable benches outside and in their cars waiting to get in. WHY??? Could not understand why anyone would wait for this crowded experience. Stopped in at Gracie's Sea Hag as it came highly recommended. Visitors had two choices 1) There was the Denny's-like side with lots of screaming kids and food all over the floor or 2) the bar with lots of smoke. The food was marginal at best - New England clam chowder that was so thick with flour the spoon could stand straight-up without support. Not our cup of tea, but may appeal to some for the rustic charm. Someone could really make a killing in the Depoe Bay area if they opened a clean restaraunt, with ocean view and good food and wine and a relaxed atmosphere. The Bay House, on the other hand was a fabulous experience! Though it was a 15 minute drive North of Depoe Bay, it was well worth every minute, expecially if you like fine dining. Excellent food, superb service, spectacular views - it was an entire evening experience and the hosts made sure we had a memorable experience ... there was no push to move the evening faster ... it was the highlight of our trip.

We have tried to be objective and not too critical of this property. For the price, it did not measure up to our expectations but that is not to say it might be just right for some.

We love this property! We have stayed in the Admiral's Suite and loved it everytime. Excellent friendly service by staff...wonderful morning breakfast and a guaranteed good time. Close to local restaurants and Gracie's Sea Hag where even if you are over 50 you feel comfortable sitting down for a drink. The property is first rate and we enjoyed watching the Coast Guard going in and out for patrols. We have also stayed at their sister property...The Whale Cove Inn and it is WONDERFUL also. Channel House has a more informal environment....and Whale Cove more formal. My husband and I feel like Honeymooners at both properties. We stay here exclusively at least three times a year.

We long anticipated the opportunity to stay at the Channel House, and it was one incredible view of the ocean, and channel into Depoe Bay. We were able to lie in bed and watch whales feeding off shore.

An important feature of these rooms, like many quality getaways is the hot tub. The hot tubs are located out on the decks where one can soak and enjoy the ocean views and breezes. On our second night, we moved to the Cuckoos Nest on the top floor. While the views were incredible, and room very nice, we found that the hot tub did not work and we weren't able to take advantage of it. .

Upon checkout, we brought this to the attention of staff and management, who initially questioned whether we were using it correctly. Then I pointed out that I used to be a plumber and pipe fitter, which led to expressions of appreciation for my input about the problem with the tub. (Incidentally, the cost of this room is $330.00 per night.) Rather than adjust our bill accordingly, they said they would be in touch later regarding a resolution. Quite some time passed and then we received a $100.00 gift certificate in the mail to use toward a future stay. At first we thought this was a nice gesture, but then it occurred to my wife and I, that rather than adjust our bill to compensate for the lack of an important room feature, the burden of reparation was placed on us. For us to enjoy this discount, we must elect to travel to stay at the Channel House again. After speaking with many others who agreed with us, we decided that even though we were traveling to the Depoe Bay area in June 09, we would not be staying at the Channel House. If they had adjusted our bill in the first place, a logical and good business practice, we would have made plans to return without hesitation. Some people look at the quick payout vs the long term I guess.

Perhaps the fact that the owners opened a very expensive new high end location up the road a ways contributed to their reticence to adjust our bill.

We called ahead after reading about this Inn in the Select Registry. I called, wanting to know about availability and he said they had two rooms available. In looking online I could tell some suites seemed to offer the Jacuzzi tub on the deck, and other ones it appeared to have a plastic shield around the tub, possibly inside. I also was looking for a King bed, come to find out they only have one and we wanted the nicest suite they had, which in this case it seems to them all views are great. I was told of the Queen bed suite on the second floor and the downstairs King suite, which was two rooms, so we ended up taking the King Suite. I did say we wanted to be up high to see out and he said, well that's a misnomer, as all units are above the ocean and you can see out with all of them. I guess I should of said from the room itself. Yes, you can see out when you're on the deck, but not too much from the ground floor. The write up says it's unassuming from the outside, and it seems old inside. Not unclean though, our room was spotless. We were also right next to the Breakfast Room where they keep a telephone that rings for the Inn, irritating. We were left two cookies, two bottles of wine if you wanted to buy for $20.00 each. A small candy dish next to the bed with a tip envelope?? I think if we would of had a different room, the experience would have been better. Only to find out at breakfast this morning there were lots of rooms open. Only wish we would have been told that when we arrived so we could of taken a look first. and maybe experienced more of what we were looking for . Had dinner at Tidal Raves, it was fine. I had reports in town about how downhill the Bay House has become, (Not from the staff at the Inn) so we skipped that. Breakfast was good, but the room was very cold to dine in. You're not allowed to take food back to your room to eat. It was ok and I'd probably stay again in an upstairs room so you don't hear the creaking of those above.

This inn is absolutely beautiful! Right on the rocky shores of the Oregon Coast. It is situated at the inlet to the tiny marina at Depoe Bay. Most rooms have a private hot tub overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Bring a bottle of Oregon wine (which they do have available for purchase), your love and enjoy the ambience. Be sure to leave your window open and sleep to the sounds of the waves!
Upscale continental breakfast is included with an incredible view. Watch the whales right on the rocks if you are so fortunate.

p.s. No children are allowed.
