“Just average but wonderfully comfortable bed. Very pet friendly”
Reviewed 29 June 2011

Harbor Lights Inn is a bay view lodging in the tiny town of Depoe Bay, a rocky coasted area south of Lincoln City.. We used a 50% off coupon for our stay which listed the regular rate at $259 a night. This was not a $259 a night room or inn. We could easily have found a luxury oceanfront room in Depoe Bay at that price. Even at 50% off we probably would have had no difficulty finding oceanfront rooms, lots of vacancies everywhere. The room was very pleasant, of average size and with a wood burning fireplace for which a presto type log was supplied. An Oregon coast guidebook in the room was over 3 years outdated, thus making the restaurant reviews within it meaningless. The bed was just great, one of the most comfortable mattresses I've slept on. There was a jetted tub which was in the small bathroom. It didn't look too inviting, the area was dark and claustrophobic, we didn't try it out. One large bath towel per person, not the super fluffy kind either. Breakfast was served at 8:30 in a charming sunny dining room overlooking the bayfront, where elevator music played endlessly until I was ready to scream (hits from the 60's kind of stuff). Coffee is available from 6am and and tasted as though made by a non-coffee drinker from old, stale grounds. I had to go to a local coffee shop later that morning to get the taste of it out of my mouth. A jar of instant decaf was available with the tea selection The omelet was okay but the eggs were kind of overcooked. Fresh juice and pastries are available for accompanying the main course. We had very little interaction with the hosts who seemed pleasant enough. An envelope for a tip for "Lisa" who was named as the person who cleaned our room, was left prominently on our room's side table. I never saw anyone other than some guys working on repairs so I hope there really was a "Lisa" who got our tip although I know that owner Bob did say he had been in our room earlier, so I don't know if he cleaned it or what but why else would he have been in there?. Free internet available but did not work in our room, we had to go to the main living area. All in all, we had a nice but not a great stay.

Room Tip: Upstairs rooms looked prefereable to me

You can tell that 20 years ago, this would have been a fantastic place to stay! It looks out onto the little harbour, has generous common areas, large rooms.
I feel like if there was a little bit of love given to the decor and furniture it would be a home away from home. For instance, the TVs are big boxes still with a VCR attached, the artwork and colour schemes are dates, and our bed frame was a little broken.
I did not experience the overly friendly attention of Bob and Beni. They seemed like regular staff members at a regular hotel.
With regards to breakfast, for both mornings we were there our two options were an omelette or eggs benny. I was a little surprised that both options were an egg dish, and on the second day, when presented with the same options, I asked if they perhaps had something that wasn't egg. They looked a little perplexed, so then I just asked for the English muffin that would be for the benny toasted. When I asked about the options at check out, they said they had an equipment malfunction so they couldn't have other options, but what can you make an omelette in that you can't make a pancake in?
We had a good stay, but it could have been so much better!

Harbor Lights Inn is located off the main highway, just above the inner harbor of Depoe Bay. There is ample off-street and well-lighted parking.

We were greeted with kindly warmth by Bob, one of the owners. He gave us a quick tour of the main floor, showing us where breakfast would be served, where we could get coffee (starting at 6am - yes!), where to get ice and where books, games and videos to borrow were located. He then showed us up one flight of stairs to our spacious room overlooking the boat harbor. Our room came with a private balcony, king sized bed, fireplace, bedside tables, a bureau where a welcoming small carafe of sherry accompanied by chocolates was waiting. There was an older TV with built in VCR and DVD player in an entertainment center. Free Wifi required no password to access. There was also a full sized closet. The bath contained a deep, soaking tub, jetted. Amenities included shampoo, conditioner, a larger than usual not-to-strongly-scented bar of soap. Additional soap, plus lotion, towelettes and more were located in the outer alcove of the bath. The towels were thick and fluffy. There was ample seating, plentiful outlets for our phone and camera battery chargers. The bed was very comfortable. We slept well.

The next morning we went down to the dining room about 7am, and spent the next hour talking and planning our day over fresh brewed coffee and some excellent black tea. We seated ourselves at a table for two. Tables are individual here, but can easily be put together for a group is desired. Beni appeared at 8:30 (breakfast is served from 8:30 to 9:30 as I recall), to offer us a choice of eggs Benedict or ham and cheese omelet for our hot breakfast entrees. Also on the breakfast sideboard were scones, fresh fruit and orange juice. As she cleared our plates and while we lingered over another round of coffee and tea, she told us about some local favorite places to visit and gave us a brochure with directions to them to take with us.

We enjoyed our stay and would happily return. For further details, please see the photos.

My wife and I recently stayed here based off of a groupon for 50% off of a 2 night stay. The groupon stated normal nightly rate of $260. It's not even worth $75 per night. You don't get an ocean view, the rooms are very dated and Beni doesn't do a very good job keeping the rooms clean (even though she leaves an envelope for a tip in your room). I would not recommend this place to anyone.

Disappointing - dated interior and guest rooms and just felt slightly unclean. Surprised that the room rates are so high.

when you walk through the front door all of the world stays behind. you are greeted by a wonderful gentlemen named Bob who makes you feel like they have been expecting your arrival like family. Beni, his wife greets you with a smile as big as the open arms that she hugs you with. you are led through a beautiful living room, library, and then to your room over looking the depoe bay harbor. when you see the big fluffy bed and cozy fireplace setting, you know you're home. there is a lounge and beautiful fireside room where my wife and i have enjoyed meeting new friends and catching up with each other. in the morning breakfast there are special recipies prepared by your host which are wonderful and also gives everyone a chance to share their last evenings adventures. if you want a better time..... just stay one more night!!! thx to Bob and Beni

If you like the smell of stale cigarette smoke mixed with fresh cigarette smoke from the moment you enter, this is the place for you. The experience only goes down from there. The Innkeeper showed us around the first floor of the dining area, common area overlooking a marina surrounded by dilapidated warehouses and eventually downstairs to our room: Captain 101. While walking down the steps and walking the narrow hallway to the room, the corners were inhabited with spider webs holding dirt particles. Upon entering the room, we were hit in the face with a very strong musty smell. The furniture was straight out of Goodwill. There is nothing wrong with this type of furniture except when one is paying $260.00 per night, one would not expect such low quality. On the writing table sat a bottle of wine only with the name of Harbor Lights Inn. Who knows what vintage the wine came from or the type of wine it was. Also occupying the desktop were two glasses (that didn’t look to be clean), an open flask of sherry and two small dove chocolates. Anyone evil could have dumped anything into the bottle. The carpeting was so grimy that I couldn’t bring myself to remove my shoes, even for the morning shower. And talking about the facilities, the sink’s stopper didn’t work to hold water for shaving. The tub’s drain backed up with the spent shower water depositing the soap scum on the sides. Gross!!! In the morning, we couldn’t bring ourselves to eat the offered breakfast. If the cleanliness of the Inn was any representation to the quality of the breakfast, we couldn’t even fathom eating the food. We look at this as an experience and try to see the good in it. When a Bed and Breakfast isn’t associated with any associations, this is a red flag. We are staying with Bed and Breakfast establishments listed in booklets like “Select Registry”. We stayed in an extravagant Bed and Breakfast in Cannon Beach for $60.00 less a night the following evening.
