“Cabin with no view - still wonderful”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 August 2013

We decided at the last minute to go visit the Oregon Coast and we found the Surfrider Resort with only 1 room left open for the dates we needed. It was the same general price range as all of the other hotels from Lincoln City to Newport. We got cabin #34. The first thing we noticed was how large a space it was. It had a fold flat leather couch/sleeper which my adult daughter said was very comfortable to sleep on, and a separate bedroom with a queen size bed. Everything was clean and there was a full kitchen. We saved money by cooking our breakfast there both days. The kitchen was complete with frying pans, silverware and dishes. It was quiet and pleasant. In the morning we took our camp chairs outside just around a corner and set them up on the beautiful overlook. That morning we saw a whale out in the water. We saw the spout of spray come up first and then as we continued to watch there were several events of the tail coming up out of the water. We all had a restful and memorable trip and we highly recommend this beautiful place.

Room Tip: We did not feel that we missed out by not having a room with a view because the weather was very nic...

This was our third year staying at the Surfrider, so we're clearly attached. We find the staff very friendly and helpful, and the location is unbeatable, feeling as though you have your own private beach and tidal pools to explore. The site is truly exquisite. Compared to other places, however, the rooms feel a little tired for the price. We love this spot, however, and feel a loyalty to their very fine staff, so may find ourselves back, but just with a more economical room.

Room Tip: Ask a lot of questions and know what's most important for you Most have lovely views.

I'm surprised that some of the reviews for this hotel were mixed because we had an outstanding experience here in every way. We had an ocean-side room on the second floor with a great view. Our patio had chairs, and although the patios aren't private (you can partially see your neighbors), it was great to sit outside and enjoy the sights and sounds of the ocean. Our room was large, clean, and comfortable with updated furnishings. The price was also very affordable for such a desirable location. No free breakfast, but the on-site restaurant served up a great to-order breakfast. We rarely stay in the same hotel twice because we like to try new places, but if we are ever in this part of the country again, we will definitely stay at the Surfrider!

After reading the reviews, we booked this hotel based on the ocean views.

We reserved an oceanview room with a balcony one month prior to our visit.
We first spent 2 nights in Portland, and while driving from Portland to Depoe Bay for our first night at Surfrider, we received a voicemail from the hotel at approximately 4pm letting us know that due to 'unforeseen circumstances,' we had to be downgraded to a partial oceanview room with no balcony.

When we got to the hotel, the manager was completely unapologetic, she made multiple excuses about their booking system not working, adding that it hasn't been working for 2 months, she then later also said that a fuse had blown. She rudely told us we didn't have to take the room and could go somewhere else, but at this point it was almost 7pm and most of the area was booked. We asked if we'd receive a discount and she was initially only going to drop the price from $125 to $117.

The room (Room 32?) was not at all what we were expecting for our short vacation. The "partial ocean view" was a side window that showed a portion of the beach. The main view was of the building directly in front. The room was smelly with an old cottagey feel. The bedroom was so hot we had to move onto the couch at about 2am in order to sleep.

The 2nd night we luckily moved to a room close to what we had originally requested, (Room 24), the difference between the 2 rooms was huge. If we had have received the room we requested in the first place I would have few complaints but I have never had an experience like this, of showing up to a hotel and being told in a matter of fact manner that we had been downgraded, especially having booked one month prior.

The manager did end up reducing the price of the first night to $100, and the 2nd night to $117.00.

I will also add that the wifi was essentially non-existent. It worked for us for a few hours on the first night, never again after that (we tried on 3 different devices).

Monty at the front desk helped us briefly after the manager left and was much more apologetic and friendly and offered us breakfast vouchers for both days.

Also, the bar staff on the Saturday night was great.

I would not pay to stay here again and would not recommend it to anyone.

I stayed at this resort and wasn't expecting anything more than a great location based on previous reviews. They have recently taken on the franchise of Clarion which is part of Choice Hotels. They obviously have made some updates to the furniture and other things because it was nothing like I expected. They have really done a nice job here. Don't expect to get much cell phone service anywhere in Depoe Bay, which is obviously not the hotel's fault. My only minor complaint would be the Wifi service which is included in the cost of the room. Its not very good, but then again its not very good at any hotel.

The views are amazing, the staff is friendly and helpful, has great beach access by way of a stair case, the rooms are super comfy. I loved having the kitchen. There is a little grocery store right across the street so we were able to buy groceries which was nice. The restaurant is good and has great seating which overlooks the beach. Didn't get a chance to check out the indoor pool but that looks great as well.

I really have no complaints. I loved this place and will be going back soon!!

Room Tip: I had room 20 and it was amazing. It is upstairs with a balcony.

The resort provided us a room on a cliff overlooking the ocean with a private balcony. The gas fireplace is nothing much, but the views and the access to the beach was great! The front desk staff were very friendly and helpful. Also, the adjoining restaurant serves excellent food, both for breakfast and dinner, at a very reasonable price.

My wife and I booked a room for her parents to get away for their anniversary. When I booked the room I had Surfrider charge my Visa for the full amount of the two night stay so everything was ready for my in-laws. My in-laws checked out the website and were very excited about the nice looking rooms in the pictures. They arrived and checked in only to be asked for payment. Luckily they took the confirmation papers and credit card receipt I received in the mail. They went to their room to find it was nothing like the pictures from the website. It had no windows that opened to enjoy the summer ocean breeze and the balcony was shared via a hallway that opened up to the room next to them. A couple of days after they checked out I found I was charged a second time for the full visit. I am still trying to get a hold of the one and only person there who can credit my Visa back for the second full charge. Needless to say, our family will not revisit this place.
