“Have stayed at much better B&B's.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 October 2010

We stayed at the C'est la vie inn in Eugene in may 2010 for two nights. The Victorian house looks rather kitschy, but never mind that. We stayed in the Matisse room which is a large room with a big ensuite bathroom with bathtub and shower. The room and bathroom were very clean. A trademark for this B&B seem to be the notes in the house and room. When entering the house, there was a note that you had to take off your shoes when it was raining outside. Personally, we don't like that, but if you don't have a problem with that, no worries. There were notes in the bathroom as well. They seemed like instructions, which is no fun at all when on holiday.

Free wi-fi in the room was good.

Breakfast was delicious, but hardly enough. Every other day they make an egg-meal or sweet meal, so that's a plus. When they brought the plate with everything on it, we thought it was just for one person, but then, we had to share it between us and another couple at the table. Quite disappointing. Fortunately there was some cake (no bread) on the side to still our appetite. Breakfast is also rather late in the morning (around 9 the day of our departure), so if you have plans, you lose an entire morning before you are well on your way. It seemed to take hours before breakfast was served, so we wandered around in the garden which is nice, but incredibly kitschy as well.

There is a small kitchen, but compared to other B&B's, there's not much to eat. Just two soda's in the fridge, some chocolate chip cookies (which were very good though), but not much else. There is no fridge in the room unfortunately.

We would look around for another place to stay if we would end up in Eugene again on a road trip.

One of the best inns ever visited. Immaculate rooms and common areas, friendly, helpful staff, beautiful gardens, great food, nothing left to do but relax and enjoy.

We had wanted to go to Paris for our honeymoon, but since that didn't work out, I am glad we at least found the C'est la Vie in Eugene! The house is beautiful, wonderful details throughout, nice gardens and even a miniature train set out back. The Gauguin room was adorable and colorful, even if it was a little on the small side it was perfect for us. The innkeepers were great, and the little 2nd floor balcony was great place to have our afternoon tea and cookies--we even got compliments on the house from passersby on the street! There was a good assortment of games to choose from in the library, good computer access and TV channels, and plenty to do in walking or short driving distance. We only stayed one night, but it was lovely.

What a treat! My friend and I were travelling through Eugene and decided to stop in to this B&B and we were delighted. Great setting, well-maintained gardens, beautiful home and great carriage house. We opted for the suite and glad we did so- the room was spacious, clean and comfortable. Fresh baked cookies to boot- who can beat that! Our hosts were spirited, kind and welcoming. An overall delight, one I would certainly recommend to people from all over looking to get away for a night or two. A must see!!!!

The C'est la Vie Inn was an excellent way to end our road trip to San Francisco. The rooms were well decorated and clean. The innkeepers were also very accommodating to our schedule as we ended up coming into the hotel late at night. In addition to this they also went well out of their way to make our 4th year anniversary special by providing complementary champagne, chocolates and roses. The morning breakfast was also quite tasty, we had a egg soufflé of sorts. The only draw back was that there was one neighbour across the street who was a little weird and kind of freaked me out when we first arrived. (i.e he was shirtless, with raggedy hair and started talking to us about bats when we stepped out of our car) Other than that, the stay was great, and I would definitely consider staying again.

The C'est La Vie Inn is an absolutely top notch B&B, the renovation and decorating is stunning, the place immaculate and the breakfasts were inspired. We didn't see much of the owners, they seem to like to keep to themselves, but the women that worked there was very nice and personable. I would highly recommend this establishment to anyone looking for a quality room in Eugene...

I'll start by giving credit where credit is due: the property and the rooms are wonderful. The gardens are beautiful and the husband innkeeper was very helpful and made suggestions for restaurants and services while in Eugene. However, our two night stay became increasingly ridiculous and as a result I cannot stress this enough: stay somewhere else. Read on for the full story or skip to the last two paragraphs.

The husband innkeeper checked us in and we were told that there was a mix up. They had already checked someone else into the room we reserved. It seemed strange, but mix-ups do happen. "C'est La Vie", right? He gave us a larger room for the same price and we were told that we might have to switch rooms back to the room we originally booked the next day. Not the best situation, but manageable. The next morning I asked the wife innkeeper about the room switch and I was told that we were fine where we were. Great! So we went off to enjoy Eugene for the day.

We came home late in the evening around 9:30 to find someone else sleeping in the room! I literally unlocked the door and nearly walked in on this poor soul! So there we were: without a room, no idea where our stuff was, no word or prior warning about this direct contradiction to what we were told earlier and no clue where to find the innkeepers. We rang the doorbell and the husband arrived and showed us to the alternate room (still a _different_ room from the one we had originally booked for two nights). They moved our belongings to the new room which was done without our permission. I found this act to be completely rude and a little bit creepy. It angered my spouse greatly. In the morning my spouse politely asked to be refunded for the 2nd night and the husband innkeeper complied. We went outside to pack our stuff and leave when the wife innkeeper came out and started yelling at us! Yes, fellow traveler, you read that correctly - yelling at us without provocation. Yelling at 7:30 in the morning while other guests and neighbors were sleeping. Yelling because why? Because we had the audacity to register a legitimate complaint? In the exchange that ensued (which I videotaped out of complete disbelief), the innkeeper called my spouse crazy and banished us from ever returning to the inn (remember the Soup Nazi from Seinfeld?).

I'll be fair: if you don't have a problem with a complete stranger touching and moving your things around without your permission or you don't mind coming in late in the evening and walking in on someone else, then I'm sure you will find this inn more than accommodating. After all, the innkeeper told us during her verbal rampage that she moves people around "all of the time." However, if this kind of thing is problematic for you, then you might want to find somewhere else to stay because not only is it likely to happen to you as well, but you will be yelled at, insulted and banished if you complain.

The food was also very disappointing. Small portions and mostly flavorless. C'est La Vie is an appropriate name for this inn, roughly translating to "That's Life" right? Well, "That's Life" is what you say in your everyday life when things go wrong, but it is not what you want to say when you are on a vacation. In fact, I think most people go on holiday so that they can escape from having to say "Well, that's life!" I'm sure Eugene has much better establishments.
