Bay Street in Old Town gets busy in the summer. There is a reason the other restaurants in Old Town are full...great food & service. Having just returned from a mini vacation and finding our favorite restaurants with a waiting list we opted for this one.It had been a year since we were here. I told my husband there is a reason there are so many empty tables. Although the decor is great, especially for firefighters and wanna be's, the service can use some improvement.
Two other tables were occupied (one with five people and one with two) when we arrived. We checked the menu and decided to stay since we both wanted seafood. We had decided upon our entree and wanted to order without seeing the wine list. Our server wasn't familiar with what wines they had so we waited for her to bring a wine list. She wasn't sure what the soup of the day was so my husband opted for salad rather than wait for her to check.
Our salads were delivered and the lettuce was crisp and fresh though otherwise unremarkable. About five minutes later she arrived with the wine, two glasses and a wine chiller. After a great deal of difficulty opening the bottle she succeeded!
The dill flavor of my husband's salmon was a bit overwhelmed by the lemon slices that had been cooked on top of it. I had cedar plank salmon which needed the lemon for flavor. The fresh yellow and zucchini squash was a tasty accompaniment that was cooked just right. The fish was cooked just right...but could have used a little flavor.
We definitely didn't feel rushed once our huger needs were met. Our server finally arrived to ask if we would like dessert and we declined. When she left to ready the bill I asked her to bring a toothpick for my husband too. She returned with the bill and headed to another table. When she finally returned to pick up the payment I asked for the toothpick again. Returning with our receipt she finally brought the toothpick.
Though she was sweet and personable her server skills can use improvement. For our dining out dollar we do expect service and our tip is commensurate. This is NOT a 15-20% tip-worthy restaurant.
If only these young people would realize that doing a good job would get them places!
