“Good Lodging near Crater Lake”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 January 2014

Aspen Inn is a nice little motel close to Crater Lake. We had wanted to stay in the park, but everything was booked so we looked a little further out and found this place. It's about 7 miles to the park entrance and takes about 45 minutes to get to the rim. We had no trouble getting there in time for our boat tour. We stayed in the "honeymoon cabin", a little A-frame cabin. There are few amenities, coffee in the morning. The WiFi didn't work and there was only one station on the TV. But we're at Crater Lake and there are far better things to do than watch TV or surf the internet. The front desk staff was friendly and the room was clean and comfortable. Our only complaint was that the window on the second floor of the cabin (that we weren't allowed to go up to) was open and it got rather cold in the room overnight. We didn't figure this out until we were checking out. Other than that, we had a very nice stay and would consider staying here again, especially if we couldn't get lodging within the park.

Room Tip: The "honeymoon" A-frame cabins were cute, but make sure all the windows are closed or it g...

We made reservations after checking out their website on line by calling the Inn. Heidi was very friendly and helpful. We stayed at the River House cabin for two nights.

The River House is just as it is depicted on the website, with lots of room for relaxing and eating. There is a creek/river that runs behind the cabin and we spotted several raptors, including a kingfisher, which was exciting for us.

The kitchen has the basic kitchen equipment to make breakfast before starting out for Crater Lake. The beds were pretty comfy too.

All in all, this was a great place to spend a few nights in the Crater Lake Area, and much more reasonable in price too.

Heidi made us feel very welcome and was a resource for things to see and do, as well as places to eat.

Room Tip: Bring a nightlight - it gets pretty dark at night.

Easy to book over the phone and extremely convenient to Crater Lake. Stayed one night on an Oregon road trip and would recommend.

Only downside is there is no place to grab a quick bite to eat in the evenings in the immediate area. Just plan ahead.

We spent one night here, originally with the intent to spend the next day at Crater Lake as part of our driving vacation around Western Oregon. In spite of the government shutdown (and Crater Lake), we decided to proceed with our plan of staying at the Aspen Inn since we wanted to see this part of Oregon anyway. We are glad we did.

Heidi and Obie went out of their way to make us feel welcomed. Heidi upgraded us to a suite which was very roomy. The room was immaculately cleaned and maintained, and my wife and I felt very comfortable there. We were very tired so we kicked back with some wine and compared photos we captured that day.

The bed was comfortable and warm. There are electric wall heaters in the main room and the bathroom. Both worked well and brought the room to a comfortable temperature quickly and quietly.

Heidi gave us some great recommendations on where to eat and what to see as we drove back toward I5. The drive along 230, then 138 was beautiful. There is a roadside park shortly after you turn north on 138 from 230 that is sandwiched between Mt. Thielson on the East and Mount Bailey and Diamond Lake on the West. You definitely want to stop there. There are also numerous water falls and other points of interest along 138, but some are not as clearly marked as they should be.

We wish that Crater Lake had been open, but we were glad we stayed here anyway. Our hosts were great and there was plenty of beautiful scenery in the area. When we try again to see Crater Lake in the future, the Aspen Inn will be our first choice of where to stay.

Room Tip: Get a suite for more space to stretch out in.

Stayed here for my resupply from my hike. Clean, friendly family and nice place to just sit and enjoy. Things are old decor but so clean it does not matter. Shower runs really good. Has microwave and small fridge and nice outside seating to eat diner or just enjoy the outside.

I stayed here because the lodge inside the national park was full.
It turned out this is really great place to stay.
We stayed A-frame cabin and it's more than enough for us, 2 adults and 1 kid.
Sue was really friendly and gave us great tips for sightseeing. It's just 20 to 30 minutes drive to the lake, yet this place is much affordable.
There is no good place to eat around here. You need to go to the restaurant of the park or drive down to the neaest town south side if you want nice meal.
What I liked is its small picnic area. It's very beautifully maintained and the picnic table is great for self-served meal. We enjoyed the sunset with quick dinner there in the evening we arrived.

Room Tip: A-frame cabin is good for the family with kids.
