Wilson Ranches Retreat Bed & Breakfast
Ranked #1 of 2 Fossil B&B and Inns

What can I say that hasn't already been said. If you are visiting the Fossil area there is no better place to stay. Take some food with you to cook on the BBQs provided because you won't want ot go out to eat at night. Whether you want to use the WRR as a base for touring the area or to just hang about at the ranch it is ideal. The rooms are clean and comfortable and unique. Phil and Nancy, their family and staff are all delightful and so very friendly and helpful. The breakfasts are such a sociable event with excellent choice of food all freshly cooked in the little kitchen. Do partake of the horse riding - even if you are a raw beginner like me - it was such fun!

Heard about this B & B from my wife's coworker. He had not been here but it looked good so we tried it. Glad we did. The house is a nice quiet place to stay, the breakfast is awesome, Nancy cooked the first one and Karen the second , both were great with a personal touch to each. You eat breakfast with the other guests and Nancy, and her daughter Kara. We did not get to meet Phil because he was busy on the ranch.

Kara is an awesome lady, her daughter Marina is also great! We went horseback riding in the afternoon. Went on trails on the ranch overlooking the area, so beautiful, Kara took photos with our camera. Kara, and Marina were great at teaching us how to handle the horses.

We visited the painted hills, and even dug a fossil in Fossil out behind the High School!

I think we will be going back!

Room Tip: They have a guest refrigerator, and microwave if you need them.

This was the most down-to-earth, personalized and accommodating B&B stay that we have ever experienced. We ended up arriving extremely late due to snow in the passes but the Wilson's were more than happy to welcome us when we arrived after 11pm with a friendly 'howdy' and a roaring fire in our room. We enjoyed exploring the ranch and listening to Phil and Nancy tell us about their incredible lives here in Central Oregon. We heard that many families and couples make it an annual ritual to come visit the ranch and now we understand why. Staying at the Wilson Ranches Retreat felt like we were visiting family. We are looking forward to bringing our young daughter with us next time. Phil and Nancy, if you're reading this, she said, "yes!"

Room Tip: The homestead room is very large (four beds) and has a nice fireplace. Each room is unique.

My wife and I wanted to visit John Day and a couple other outdoorsy things. She found the ranch which sounded like our cup of tea. Got there with no issues and check in was simple. Went over and petted a couple horses and then enjoyed the dinner we brought as we watched deer graze in the field right behind the lodge house. Breakfast was out of this world good. The place has a rustic ranch feel and that's what I would expect. Only three minor things:

1. Enjoy breakfast and plan well ahead for your other meals. We managed to find a bar or small local places while out on our adventures.

2. Not an issue for me but might be for others. At the ranch ime rooms share a restroom.

3. If you want a horse ride talk with them ahead. It might be hunting season. Lesson learned for me.

Good times all around though.

This B & B is set in the high desert of north-central Oregon. The roads are twisty and fun and very well maintained, so it's easy to get there. The scenery is stunningly beautiful and changes with the light so that there are constant opportunities for photography. The house is warm and welcoming as are the owners and staff. They all made us feel very much at home. We stayed for two nights . I was in the Pioneer room and it is filled with old family photos that give you a sense of what it must have been like to homestead this enormous ranch. The breakfasts were hearty, delicious and filling. And then, of course, there is the horseback riding! What a fabulous experience! The horses are very well trained, well suited to each rider and the guides are really good at making sure that everyone is comfortable, looked after and having a good time. We went uphill and down, across streams and over logs, along cattle trails and through the open fields. We even got a little geography lesson! I had a fantastic time and I highly recommend this place.

We are repeat visitors and find the ranch as enjoyable as in the past.
Accomodations are rustic but exceptionally clean and orderly.
We recommend enjoying the expansive breakfast (provided) and bringing food for your own preparation in the evenings. Dining in Fossil is beyond unexceptional and the Condon Hotel (20 miles distant) has closed its dining room.
The ranch has a guest refrigerator, microwave, and outdoor grill. Evenings on the deck, overlooking the course of Butte Creek are pleasant and in this area there are few, if any mosquitos.
The fishing, for smallmouth bass, in the John Day River is excellent at nearby Service Creek and the horseback riding program at the ranch is excellent.
A nicer place for a ranch visit, without a journey to Montana or Wyoming, is hard to imagine. We like it and you almost certainly will too.
