McMenamins Gearhart Hotel
Ranked #2 of 3 Gearhart B&B and Inns
Reviewed 22 May 2014

We have stayed at several McMenamin's properties and have always liked them for their charm and uniqueness. The hotel in Gearhart is nice and the room was comfortable, however the hotel lacks that special something that can be found at other properties especially The Edgefield and The Grand Hotel.
The property is not on the beach, but it is a short walk away. There is no ocean view, so don't go with that expectation.
We are not golfers, but I'd guess that if you golf you'd really like this location. However, aside from golf there are no other amenities like a day spa, soaking pool, or theater that can be found at other properties.
The restaurant serves the usual McMenamin's fare and was enjoyable.
We did attend a dinner in honor of James Beard that had 7 or 8 courses and wine pairings for each. That was a lot of fun,
Overall, we had a nice stay but I was not over the moon about this particular McMenamin's offering,

Sorry to hear we did not have as many fun things for you as you had hoped, you are right and even though we do not have as many extra things to do like Edgefield and Grand Lodge we do have the beach and lots of outdoors type thigs like golf, hiking and storm chasing. Thanks for taking the time to give us a review and we hope to see you again in the future.

This one in Gearhart is right across from the ocean and you can even drive your vehicle on the beach, which is a wonderful thing to do at sunset. As with all of McMenamins hotels, the rooms are wonderful, the service outstanding, the food delicious, etc., etc. I just love McMenamins hotels!!!

Room Tip: Book early!

I had made reservations about a month ahead hoping for great weather. Well as my luck never holds it was raining and windy. High winds and lots of rain. So the golf course was empty, the hotel was almost empty and the service and staff was very attentive. I love the McMenamins hotel and if I can stay with them I usually do. Thanks for all your art and great saves with these historic properties.

Room Tip: Get a view of the golf course, only a couple blocks from the beach.

My wife and I needed to get out of the Willamette Valley with its recent cold, foggy inversion and thought that we would try the Gearhart Hotel. We like McMenamins properties generally, the beer and food suit our needs, and since this hotel took dogs we were anxious to try it. First, let me tell you my review will be skewed because it was sunny and 60 while we were there so the stay was great weather-wise. Our room was neat, cozy and clean. They made us and our dog feel welcomed. It was quiet since it was a Sunday night and I didn't see a single golfer so that made the grounds easy to walk my dog around.
The beach is about three blocks away and you can't see the ocean from the hotel. There is a road to the beach and you can drive on parts of it or walk where there are no cars on other parts. We walked there and it was nice since the walk back got most of the sand off of us. We saw a herd of elk the first evening we were there and the beach is big so there was plenty of room for my dog to play fetch in the waves.
We were disappointed by the dinner service upstairs Sunday night. We "seated ourselves" but no one came to serve us. So we got up and went downstairs to the smaller eating area in the basement. There was only one server for the bar, small restaurant and extra seating area for the football playoff games, but we were served timely and she was friendly. The food and beer is your typical McMenamins fare so that was nice.
We did return to the main dining area for breakfast the next morning and we were served promptly.
We also went outside Sunday evening and there was a fire going but at night, it was way too cold to be out long.
There is an elevator handy and there was good coffee in the hall at the top of the stairs Monday morning.
We enjoyed our stay so much we are going back for a night next month.

Room Tip: We had a corner room, so in the morning we could have the shades closed on the south side and open o...

We decided to stay here after a couple nights at the Edgefield. We wanted to check another McMenamins and we really enjoyed this location as well. It was very cozy and comfortable. We got a king room with a balcony. Staff were great and good food. Not much for a town but close to the beach and driving distance to Seaside and Cannon Beach. Edgefield had more places to explore but this place was also worth it.

Room Tip: We chose the king with the balcony. It was very nice.

We found this beautiful little (16 rooms) inn on our drive up the Oregon coast. Our room (#210) was spacious and beautifully appointed. The king bed was comfortable and the shower was spacious. The balcony overlooking the golf course was a little tiny but made for a comfortable spot for a glass of wine before dinner. Dinner now is another matter but I'll get to that. Staff were very accommodating (Linda at the front desk was a fabulous ambassador for the hotel) and made one feel at home immediately. In spite of the staff's enthusiasm for the hotel's cuisine, we found it mediocre. Presentation was simple and preparation was...well very average pub fare. Nonetheless an extremely beautifully appointed hotel and we'll be back - this time to golf.

As native Oregonians, we tend to take for granted the allure the Oregon Coast offers to many. Since it is less than an 80 mile drive for us, we unusually take a spring or summer day trip, complain about the traffic and vow to never do it again. We took a new approach this time and visited the McMenamins Sandtrap Gearhart Hotel over a weekend in November with far less traffic to deal with... Well, less people in general to be specific.

This was our second mcmenamins property to spend an overnight. Our first was at the Kennedy School which we adored. Knowing that we aren't huge fans of the types of lodging and entertainment offerings located along the northern end of the Oregon Coast, we chose to stay at Mcmenamins hoping it would provide some entertainment for the evening.

Our entertainment consisted of watching the timbers playoff game on a tiny tv in the downstairs bar. Not exactly what I had hoped for, but I learned that Friday nights has live music.... Saturday's, not so much. One of us was more entertained to be honest. Fortunately we dined elsewhere because the food service appeared to be very slow downstairs. After the game, we headed upstairs to see that bar was any more lively. And continued upstairs to our room. I guess we hoped there would be a little more going on at the bars... It was remarkably sleepy for a Saturday night.

The good news is the hotel rooms are very nice, very clean and quite comfortable. We had no issues with noise as other had mentioned but as it was like a morgue the weekend we were there, that should not come as a surprise. We had a links view which I think was a win as the ocean is a good 300+ yard walk with two condo units blocking your view. I was surprised to find a tv in our room. We enjoyed the complimentary coffee and room service breakfast was great and we were THRILLED to see vegetarian options!!! Service was a little slow on room but it was very nice.

Would we stay here again? Maybe with a group of friends? The problem isn't Mcmenamins, it's the location. If you golf or love endless frequenting gift shops or walking on the beach all day, then this is a great place for you.
