“Five-star view; no-frills lodging”
Reviewed 4 June 2011

Very clean and comfortable, but no extras here. That was just fine with us, since we had a room with a balcony overlooking the Columbia River Gorge. Foregoing the coffee-maker and internet access was a small price to pay for the incredible view. The staff was friendly and helpful. I rated the sleep quality only four stars; I didn't sleep all that well, but I can't be sure it wasn't due to overeating at an excellent meal in Hood River... Would definitely go back, and get a suite with fireplace next time!

Thanks for your feedback! We are fixing/upgrading our free wifi right now, so the next time you stay with us it shold be ready to go with a good strong signal. If you decide your discomfort sleeping was our bed and not the meal, please let us know! We also have free coffee makers we put in rooms if requested; I'll work on making sure that info is more available. Thanks again!

This is a great location if you want to stay right on the river. Also directly next to the White Buffalo Wine Bar & Bistro so you can walk to your room after trying all the Oregon and Washington wines. Also next door to a fancy resort which costs 2xs the price for the same view. Short drive to some great trailheads for hiking the Columbia Gorge. We hiked Eagle Creek and Rewena Crest for two totally different environments. Also drove the "Fruit Loop" in Hood River. Note I couldn't get a strong enough internet signal unless I keep the front door open. - But was not there to use computer

Room Tip: ask for Large View Room on 2nd / 3rd floor

Thanks much! We do enjoy helping our guests experience all of the good stuff there is in and around Hood River, much of it not easily found! We are upgrading our wifi in the next coupld weeks, so you shouldn't have any problem getting a good wifi signal next time you stay. Thanks again!

I stayed at the Vagabond during the week of Jan 17th to the 20th while in town for a snowboard comp at MT Hood. This is now the only place I will stay when going to MT Hood. The rooms were clean, location was great, staff was amazing and the cost can’t be beat. It was a simple 40 minute drive to the hill each day for 8 am. If you are an outdoor enthusiast, winter or summer this is the place to stay. I could go on and on about my experience there but it is better if you find out for your self.

Thanks for your review! We try to make a trip to the mountain as painless on the pocketbook as we can because we love getting up to the mountain often as well. Glad to be a nice, quiet, convenient place for your stay and we hope the snow keeps falling!

This was the best hotel I stayed at on my trip back to Colorado. My room had a refrigerator and microwave in it. All the amenities of the big hotel chains at half the price. Very clean and pleasant. The grounds were beautiful and well maintained. The night clerk was very helpful to this weary traveler and her dog. I highly recommend this place to everyone.

If you make it out our way again please feel free to stop by as you pass even if it's just to say hi (we love seeing our guests again)!

I had booked the more expensive 2nd floor large river-view room hoping to enjoy the balcony when we arrived. However, due to an airline delay, we arrived well after dark and had to wait until morning to see the gorgeous view of the gorge! We were very tired and hungry. The friendly front desk ladies suggested the eatery (BBQ? bar?) next door, but since we could hear the music and crowd from where we were in the hotel office, we decided we were not in the mood for all that.. The ladies told us about the First Fridays' events downtown, so we drove there and had a great meal at Full Sail Brewery. We stopped at Safeway on the way back to pick up yogurt and cereal since this hotel does not offer any breakfast. We were not aware of the coffee in the lobby, so in the morning we just left and got coffee on our way out of town. The room was spacious and had a small balcony which we enjoyed in the morning, although it was too cool to sit out there for breakfast. We appreciated the little touches like the silk floral arrangement and the decorated wine glasses (instead of typical hotel plastic cups). There is no elevator, so hauling our luggage up was not fun so late at night, but the view would have made it worthwhile if we had been able to get there before dark. Overall, this is a clean and friendly place in a great location, but for over $100 a night, I did expect a coffeemaker in the room. A couple of pieces of fruit on the table would add a nice welcoming touch, and not be very expensive to the hotel. The bed was ok, but seemed a bit high, and the pillows were too fat for our comfort. The hotel grounds in the back area were very pretty. We had to leave quite early in the morning, so could not take full advantage of the view or the grounds. Hood River looks like a great town to visit, and If we ever return, we would likely stay here again.

Thanks for your review! We do indeed have fresh coffee in the office, and we currently do have coffeemakers in the suites. I'll talk with the local coffee stores to get something that would fit in our rooms, so depending on when you come back it may just be there for you! If we haven't set it up by then, we can certainly put a coffeemaker in your room next time (we have a few extra), just let us know. We do have a few different types of pillows for different kinds of sleepers and can bring extras to you if you would like next time. That's a good idea with the fruit, we'll look into that one! Next time you'll have to stay when there's a bit more light outside, maybe when the wildflowers come up around the grounds this spring! Thanks again

The view of the river from my room is drop-dead gorgeous. The grounds are beautiful and expansive, with picnic tables strategically located so that I can enjoy the sunsets from either my room or the tables. The staff is friendly and seems to truly want to make my stay comfortable. I think the value is exceptional, especially for a motel with such a view, and such beautiful grounds, and with a microwave and fridge in every room. This place may not be for everyone, as the rooms are not fancy, although they are clean, quiet, and quite complete. If you value the setting, this is the place. I stay here often, and it's like home for me.

Thanks for your review! We're going to get some more picnic tables for the field by the cliff for next spring/summer so guests have even more places to picnic, relax, or watch the sunset. We'll also be remodeling rooms with new furniture so we can be at least a little more fancy (but still keep our rates inexpensive)! We're glad we could be your home away from home. Thanks again!

We recently spent a week here while on vacation. It the the friendliest and most helpful hotel staff we have ever encountered. They went out of their way to get us into a room when we called at the last minute. The views from the upper rooms is fantastic. We can't wait to go back.
