“Good hotel with a wonderful breakfast overlooking river”
Reviewed 5 August 2013

Hotel is in a good location overlooking the river. The room we stayed at was not on the river side. It was a bit noisy from highway noise as we were at the end of the hotel closest to the highway. Had a ground level floor which was convenient for taking suitcases in. room was comfortable had good connections for electronics and wifi worked well. Best surprise was the cooked breakfast. There were a number of good choices and was a great start to the day. It was a warm day so we enjoyed it on the deck overlooking the river.

This hotel had the best view and was right on the water. The cost for a room facing the parking lot was a bit more than I would have liked to pay and the bed was very hard and uncomfortable. The service here from the staff was excellent in the restaurant during both dinner and breakfast!!

I would highly recommend staying in this hotel. The dining patio provides an amazing view of the Columbia river and its surrounds - it truly has to be seen. Staff were very kind and helpful. I was very impressed with the free breakfast choices offered. I had breakfast two mornings and dinner two evenings, I am fussy and I had no complaints. I also liked the room, bed was very comfy. I did not use the pool so I can't comment.

Dear Sive A, Thank you for your recommendation and for the Five Star Review. It's always satisfying to have a happy guest and especially satisfying in your case being you're a bit fussy! We appreciate you having four meals with us, that says a lot. Thanks again, we hope to see you soon. Chuck Hinman - General Manager

It's obvious why this hotel is # 1 for Hood River - it's a really nice place to stay. Whatever you may think of Best Westerns in general, forget about it if you stay here. This is a really fine hotel.

Unfortunately time only allowed us a one-night stay, but we'd definitely come back. For a Sunday night in high season we paid about $157 including tax (AAA rate) for a queen-bedded room overlooking the river. We were on the ground floor in what is called the "East Wing". Don't be put off by what looks like a tired ca. 1970s building. The room was lovely. (What I imagine is called the "West Wing" is more attractive on the outside and more contemporary in outward appearance, but again the East Wing is terrific once you get inside.)

Furnishings all appeared to be very new, and the bathroom was large, modern and beautiful. Though we didn't make use of it, the room had a small patio and it overlooked the river. Rooms on the second or third floors would have even nicer views.

Originally we were booked in another hotel at about $15 less overall, but when a room opened up here I grabbed it due to its superior reputation. Because breakfast - a real breakfast - was included in the Best Western's price it more than made up for the price difference.

When I write "real breakfast" I mean it. You get a green voucher which can be used on about 10 menu items (the best ones). My choice was an omelet with potatoes and it was excellent. You would easily pay $10 for this in a restaurant so combined with the breakfast my partner ordered you can see that this was a good deal. The breakfast at the other hotel would have been far more basic. Not to mention the fact that we ate on the balcony overlooking the river.

At check-in we were also given a kind of 2-for-1 coupon for use in the restaurant for dinner. We didn't use this as we ate in downtown Hood River but others might find it useful.

Because our plans were to go to a local brewery (Double Mountain, excellent!) for dinner, we walked from the hotel to the downtown. Ask for directions from the hotel staff as it's a little convoluted even though it isn't far: about 9/10 of a mile. If you are riding the Mt. Hood Railroad (we didn't this time) it would be easier to walk than to drive, unless you have very small children.

The Best Western is right off of I-84 with several gas stations and the only Starbucks in town right next door.

Check-in and check-out were efficient. The front desk clerk who checked us in took a lot of time to give us useful information which was very much appreciated.

You can't go wrong staying here.

Room Tip: Our ground floor room on the river side was great, and if you get a room on a higher floor you would...

The rooms were beautiful and very clean, we had a river view, which I would recommend. The pool was great. We ate in the restaurant for lunch and breakfast and were extremely satisfied with all meals. Very good food. This trip will become an annual experience, can't wait to stay here again.

We highly recommend this place. We had 2 fine rooms, right on the Columbia, with an excellent breakfast. We enjoyed the large outdoor swimming pool. Staff was excellent. There was plenty of parking. We enjoyed an excellent view from our room of the bridge, the river, and the freeway.

We only stayed one night, and spent part of the next day touring local wineries. There are several good restaurants, several fruit stands, and some pretty good wineries in the Hood River area.

We've stayed in Hood River at vacation rentals, so this was a first for staying in a hotel. We will be back! Great view of the gorge, free bicycle rental with paths just outside the door, food was terrific and (a must for me) room was clean and beds comfortable. While the food was a little pricey - well not really for Hood River - it was so worth it AND they gave us coupons for free breakfasts and buy-one-dinner entree get one half off! Breakfast on the deck overlooking the river was as good as it gets for this laid back but "surprises everywhere" town. Rooms were Best Western style - not plush but it all worked with the large windows and pretty landscaping plus amenities; Pool, hot tub, exercise room, beach with rentals including boards, lessons, jet skis and boats. Super staff. Easy to get around. We road the bikes a little over a mile to the park and brew pub for lunch one day. Walked into town another day, also about a mile each way, mostly on bike/ped paths. Enjoyed watching the wind surfers from our balcony. Starbucks in the same parking lot and noticed a massage spa next door but were too busy for all that!

Room Tip: Pay for the river view. If you have kids they have a few large two bedrooms. Refrigerator and micro...
