I really don't know what some folks are expecting when they go to Paulina Lake Lodge. If you are expecting Sun River, Mt. Bachelor or Black Butte then you are going to be disappointed. You need to know that this is a National Forest Service property located in the scenic outback of Central Oregon. It is what it is and the "is" is great.
I stayed in the Reed Cabin with ~9 other friends and each and everyone of us had a GREAT time. Yeah, you gotta split your own wood; so what, it's right outside the front door. There's a lot of it and it splits easily. Big deal. The water tasted just fine. We didn't see a single rodent or bug. The cabin that we stayed in was NOT in disrepair. It was a cool, clean, old place. The kitchen functioned more than fine for turning out breakfast/lunch/dinner for a group of 10.
All of the interaction that we had with the lodge staff was great. Todd, Karen, their son and the lady in the bar. Every single one of them are nice people.
We booked the same spot for the same time next year and added another day so we sure must have liked it. Split the cost with a group of friends and you have an affordable weekend in a great place.
