“Avoid this hotel - overrated and outdated”
Reviewed 28 November 2007

My husband and I stayed at the Inn of Spanish Head for two nights, for a little get-a-way at the Oregon Coast. We had passed this hotel many times while driving on Hwy 101 and always wanted to stay here.

Unfortunately, this hotel did not meet our expectations at all, especially considering the cost at over $200 per night. The hotel claims that all rooms have an ocean view, however we were assigned a room on the ground floor that had a limited view only of the ocean, due to a low wall in front of the ground floor walkway outside. This was compounded by the fact that since there was a walkway outside, we could not leave our drapes open to see the view unless we wanted people to walk by and stare into our room. And believe me, they did stare! If our drapes were open even briefly, people would slow down just to look into our room. Really, we are not that interesting.

The worst part of the ground floor situation was revealed at night - there were no openable windows in our room except for the sliding glass door onto the outside walkway, which did have a screen but also presented a security risk as anyone could easily enter our room through the screen door (which had no working lock). We tried running the air conditioner at night, even though we prefer the fresh air, and of course it was like listening to a jet engine all night long.

After the first night, after housekeeping came through, we found that not all of our dirty towels were replaced, and the coffee service was not replenished either (we were staying two days, had only been given a one day's supply). We had to call the front desk to get our supplies replenished.

The rooms appear to have been remodeled sometime fairly recently, and the kitchen and bath fixtures were all very nice, but the poor condition of the windows/heating & ventilation unfortunately outweighed the improvements they had made.

We did let the hotel know about the problems, and contacted them after our stay also, but have received no reply back.

The one bright spot was the restaurant in the hotel, on the top floor. We had lunch and dinner there and the view from the restaurant was spectacular, the food was great and the wait staff was excellent.

I would recommend you skip a stay at the Inn at Spanish Head, but definitely enjoy a lunch or dinner while in Lincoln City.

  • Liked — Bath remodel was well done.

We stayed at the Inn at Spanish Head in March for 2 nights. It was spectacular. Our room, #633, was just beautiful and the bed was very comfortable (a Select Comfort bed).

The room was excellent - very clean, beautifully decorated (loved the colored glass floats) and had a lovely view. The bathroom was large and roomy and the kitchen was nicely done.

The staff were very friendly and helpful. We had a wonderful time and will stay again!!

We had a very nice stay last weekend. There was a small hiccup with the reservations and it was immediatley addressed. The service was outstanding.

My husband booked one night at The Inn at Spanish Head as a fun getaway without our 5 kids. The price was $206.00 with tax.

We arrived on an absolutely gorgeous day. When we got into the lobby we were told to step up as soon as the receptioist was available. However, the phone rang and she prompty ignored us and took the phone call. She did return to us, but was interupted a few more times while we were trying to check in.

We got to our room (2nd level, queen bedroom suite) and I first noticed a very musty smell. We promptly opened up the sliders out to the balcony. What an amazing view, the one thing this property had going for it. The smell disapated some.

When we checked in, our packet had a coupon for a free appetizer at the bar, so we headed up to the top floor to enjoy some appitizers. We don't drink so I was worried about meeting the $4.00 per person drink minimum. The appetizers were OK. Not really anything special, but then again, 1 was free and the others were only 1.95. The server was nice, but slow. Items were brought 1 at a time as they were ready across at the restaurant. We decided, based on our experience there, that we wouldn't waste our money on room service or the restaurant at the hotel. The nice thing was being able to charge our bill to our room. And we never did meet the 8.00 drink minimum for the both of us.

Next we decided to go for a walk down on the beach. They advertise this property as having a spa, so I was expecting a "spa", not a hot tub. Oh well. We walked down to the beach through the spa and pool area and my husband made a comment about how they definately hadn't put money back into the hotel. I was trying not to say anything seeing as he took it upon himself to plan this. We did enjoy a fabulous walk on the beach to watch the sunset.

After that we went back up to the room where the musty smell was back. Opened up the window again...

Left for dinner. We ate at Pier 101. Great food for a very good price. I would highly recommend this restaurant!

Back to the room. Musty smell again. I will say that the bed was very comfortable. However, as soon as we walked into our room we could hear the tv from the room next to us. Then I didn't even want to talk for fear that everything we said would be overheard.

We checked out the next morning around 8:45. Again, another perfect day at the Oregon Coast. If not for the unseasonably fantastic weather I would not have been happy with our stay. We will NOT be returning to this property. Way too much money for the quality. I was asked when I checked out how our stay was. I decided to keep my mouth shut because as soon as the receptionist asked she quickly moved on to other things. I figured that she really didn't want to know or really even care. I'll just take my money elsewhere next time.

What a shame that a place with such a beautiful view and location could give such shoddy lodging and crappy guest service.
Our room felt outdated, old, and really smelled like old vomit and dead sea creatures combined. When we complained about the smell, the clerk handed us a spray bottle of some noxious deodorizer and told us to take care of it ourselves.
The carpet was worn in may places throughout the hotel, there was sand everywhere in the hotel as well. The staff was rude and unhelpful, and some of them did not even know anything about Lincoln City as well.
The resteraunt has a wonderful view, too bad it was totally overpriced for Oregon coastal fare (think California prices in Malibu). The waiters were also unknowledgeable about the food on the menu, such as where local food came from and such, as well as being one of the slowest dinners ever to come and then with cold food on the plate. What a crock.
This place really should be shut down, and some of the exhorbitant prices that they charge should be funneled back into maitenance of the property, proper training for their employees, and just totally revamping of the resteraunt.
I for one will be sure to tell everyone that I know of that there are much better places to stay on the Oregon coast, with better service, better prices, and without the attitude of indifference.

My husband took me to the Inn at Spanish Head for my birthday weekend. We stayed in an Oceanfront Studio. It had all the amenities of home, full kitchen, king size bed, full set of patio sliding doors so we could open them hear the ocean and feel the warm sunshine. Our room and the entire inn was very clean. We used the hot tub and pool, both were very clean and a nice temparture. We had dinner at the restuarant on the 10th Floor. The staff was nice, the food was very good. Only complaint was the bannana's foster was a bit disappointing. Overall it was a great weekend getaway with more than great accomdations. Highly recommend for a romantic weekend getaway.

It had been 6 years since we last stayed at the Inn at Spanish Head. Since then, I don't think they have upgraded a thing. The room we had was a studio with a full kitchen. The appliances were very old, the carpeting was worn, the TV must be 15 years old, the bathroom was dated to say the least and the paint on the deck and outside walls were peeling or chipped. We did have a great view from the deck which is the only redeeming quality of the place these days. The windows in our room looked as though they had not been cleaned for over a month or two. Since they get alot of sea air, they get dirty easy, but at $180 per night, clean windows should be expected in a view room.

The restaurant has great views (through the dirty windows) but the food is ho hum. It is overpriced and served by a staff that is slow and not that friendly. Our dinner the first evening was very overpriced for the quality of the meal. We had breakfast there our last morning and we were one of two couples in the restaurant at 8:30am (should have been a hint) and it took over 5 minutes to be acknowledged and another 15 minutes to get a stack of undercooked, cold pancakes. I will never go there again and plan to tell everyone I know that travels to stay awat from there.

I do recommend the restaurant in Chinook Winds Casino. The food was great as well as the service. I was pleasantly surprised by the great clam chowder they serve with their meal. In the Pacific Northwest we are chowder snobs and their chowder is very good.
