“Free breakfast, free wifi, near the beach.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 February 2012

Beautiful, clean place; warm, spacious and quiet.
Breakfast was very good, fresh OJ, generous amount of eggs, bacon etc. and shredded cabbage! A Zen touch. We were surprised how much we liked that.
Friendly people and a really gorgeous, long, sandy beach just down the street; it seemed to go on forever. Wonderful for our walks beside the ocean.
Very reasonable and we would go there again.

Room Tip: Hiroshige is very spacious.

We were very happy with this one. Landlady was at the door before we rang; check in was pleasant and quick. Internet worked well.

Bedroom was large, comfortable bed, warm and clean. Living room was really spacious, very nice room, huge television, windows looking on the Japanese garden; some interesting structures and stone patios. There is more to the place than you can see from the street. You cannot see the ocean from the windows but you can hear it!

You can walk on the beach in a minute or two; great beach, very clean and scenic mountain at the end. Very nice sunset the night we were there.

Breakfast was served in our living room, did not have to see another person; much appreciated after a few days on the road. Eggs, bacon and stuffed crepes, my wife had the apple one and I had chocolate and banana, very delicious!

The place costs a tad extra if you only stay one night; they have discounts if you stay longer. We thought it was reasonable and were happy to pay it for the one night we could go there.

A good find.

Dear Donald A,

Thank you for writing such a lovely review.

We were very glad you could stay here and that you enjoyed what we have to offer. The winter sunsets on the beach are spectacular and we are glad that there was such a bright and stormy one the night you were here.

We look forward to your return should you ever need accommodation in the area again.

My husband surprised me with a trip to the beach after work. I slept all the way there! I woke up when we arrived with the dark, fresh air, the sound of the waves softly breaking and all the stars shining. So many stars. We went through a little gate and up the path to the front door where the landlady was waiting to let us in. It was a very warm and cozy little room, the Zen Room. We ate our quiche and salad we brought from home in the Bistro and filled in our breakfast requests.

We slept so well, possibly because we consumed a bottle of wine with supper. We both had the bacon and eggs for breakfast, not very exciting but well cooked and the fried potatoes with garlic were really good. The fruit was tangerines, very good sweet ones.

We then made for the beach which was fantastic; huge waves and white spray flying off them like veils in the wind. Gorgeous. The little path to the beach is like the picture on their website. This is such a wonderful place if you like the beach. We walked for miles and hardly saw another person. It was sunny and warm, in January!

We had meant to leave but decided to stay another night and get up early to go back to Portland. Mrs. Smigel made us egg sandwiches and marmalade sandwiches the night before and we made our own hot coffee. We walked to the beach in the dark before we left next morning. The moon was still shining and the sea was steely, silvery grey in its light. There were two fishing boats with bright lights on the water like flames. Very cold but very romantic. We drove back to Portland through a lovely pink sunrise and frosty fields.

Back in the office by 9 a.m. and cannot believe I was by the lovely ocean only a few hours ago!

Dear Seagullseaglesdeer,

Thank you for your beautiful review. Your description of the stars in the sky when you arrived is lovely, and also your sunny day on the beach.

We are very glad you could stay here and that you enjoyed the dark, early winter morning with the bright lights of the fishing boats; one of the great, romantic views of the coast.

Yes, we really are not too far from Portland. We hope you will stay here again.

Place was clean, bed was comfortable, food was good. Wife liked it. Manager lady took care of us and the breakfast was there as ordered. Quiet place as advertised.

We would go back.

Room Tip: We had the Hiroshige. No complaints.

Very comfortable place and lots of sunshine. Had the Zen Room, seems like the other one is always taken! Apple crepes the day we were there; very good, some delicious spice in them. Came with eggs and bacon. Bed is a queen, nice firm mattress; good place to watch TV from. Generous size screen they have there. Had a peaceful sleep that night. Went for a long walk on the beach when we arrived as you cannot check in until four. A wonderful beach to walk on. Pick low tide if you can; a bit crowded and soft sand the next morning when the water was up. Walk the first day was great, ocean was way out, everything very pale blue, both wet sand and sky, all like one! Memorable.

Altogether I would say this is a winner; we liked it. Would go back in a heartbeat and stay longer!

Room Tip: Zen is OK. No complaints. But we will try for the other one next time; looks like a palace!

Dear Walkingslowly,

What a lovely review; thank you so much for writing it for us.

Yes, the pale blue days of December are quite extraordinary; the winter months can surprise you when the wind is quiet and the ocean is silvery.

We are very glad you liked it here and we hope you can return before too long.

Very nice clean place, gorgeous beach, wonderful weather every day we were there. We walked each day around noon. It was low tide with blue sky and blue silky sand and we just melted in it. We never saw a cloud. Lots of bright stars each night. You can have breakfast up till ten o clock. There was plenty of food. Eggs on fresh garlic toast was quite strong but we both liked that one and very sweet grapefruit half each day. The sun shone in our bedroom in the after noons, The Hiroshige Room. Super comfortable bed! I think it is a very nice place. December is a good time to go there as there are very few other people on the beach. Hope we get back there some time!

Room Tip: Hiroshige is a steal; so much space for the price. The Zen looks good value also though.

I had a very disappointing experience. I made a reservation at the Zen Garden, which was just one of the places we were going to stay on a two week coastal vacation. I was asked to send a check and was surprised to get an e-mail asking where the check was when it didn't arrive two days later. The check arrived the next day and we were sent a long list of do's and don'ts (we are pilots who fly our plane on vacation, and because this stop was in the middle of our trip we just needed an option in case of bad weather). But the bigger surprise is when I e-mailed the Zen just to inquire if I could change the date of my reservation if needed. I didn't ask for a date change, just an inquiry if I could. I got a curt e-mail back telling me my reservation was cancelled and my check would be returned the next day. That was quit a shocker! We stayed somewhere else, which was within walking distance from the main street in Manzanita, a much better place, which is not the case with the Zen Garden. We did drive down to the edge of town to see what we had missed by not staying at the Zen, The place is pretty sad looking compared to where we did stay. I would venture to stay, if you are middle class like us you don't want to stay there.
