“Below average Homewood Suites”
Reviewed 24 September 2011

I debated 2 or 3 stars for this property. But I've stayed in other Homewood Suites and this one did not measure up, so 2 it is. We (husband and I) stayed for one night. Hotel was a convenient base for seeing a play in Ashland. When we checked in the clerk neglected to offer my Hilton Gold premiums. When I reminded her (she said "oh yes, I guess if you have that checked") and asked for two beverages (it was hot!) she pointed me to the pantry. The selection there was very poor - looked as though it hadn't been stocked for awhile. So she went in back and got me two warm beverages and a pack of milano cookies. Ok fine. It was a weekend so there was no evening reception. We went to the room which was ok, but smelled of cleaning chemicals over smoke. It faced a parking lot. We also heard lots of noise through the walls/doors. But otherwise ok. The play was great and, as a result of getting home late we overslept. Breakfast ended at 9:30 (a bit early for weekend) and we got there at 9:35 hoping for at least a piece of fruit. As I stood in front of the fruit display about to reach, the attendant grabbed and took it away. (I understand this was our fault for being late, but it still felt a little rude). My summary - it was okay for a night. But it was far from the best Homewood Suites I've visited. And If/when I return to the area I will go elsewhere.

Room Tip: ask for a view and an edge room to avoid noise from other rooms.

Thank you for sharing your experience about your stay. Please accept my ap0ologies for the poor service you received at check-in and particularly at breakfast. I know especially on weekends that guests often sleep in and come down right when breakfast is ending, or a few minutes after. In the future we will leave breakfast out a bit longer to try and accommodate all our guests.

Thank you for your business and I hope that you will give us another try. We appreciate the feedback as it will give us an opportunity to improve our service in the future.

Most of the reviews have it on point. This is a hotel which looks brand new, clean, and has breakfast. The suite is spacious with a couch, desk and full kitchen. Our room had a view of the the hills and a field. It is close to Ashland.

BOTTOM LINE: We'd stay here again if the price was right for an overnight visit. We'd also have it on our short list for an extended stay property. We recommend it to others with the "PROs" and "CONs" in mind as follows.

Our experience was AOK. Service was good. The room was comfy enough. But weighing all factors, we remain just lukewarm about the Homewood format. Different strokes for different folks.

AN OBSERVATION: While Homewood Suites may often be thought of as an extended stay biz hotel, on our brief visit here and also our extended visit in Asheville the folks on prem suggest this is a baby boomer traveler and family friend traveler format.

My husband and I being boomers ourselves, there was much to appreciate about that - universal access design elements like step in showers with grab bar, good lighting in bathroom spaces, barrier free passage spaces in the studio room and so on. Equally as helpful for travelers developing the mobility or vision limits that come with age as for families with small children. Makes all people welcome.

Something I also noted, in that general theme, was the safe syringe disposal box in the restroom off the main lobby. Guess that reflects the reality of injectable meds, like insulin, needing to be used in such increasing numbers in the traveling public that a hotel would make the effort to provide disposal sites on prem. Interesting concept.

So.

Here's what this property has going for it.

The "PROs":

1. Clean throughout.
2. Staff is friendly. (Our reservation experience in particular was top notch as was check in.)
3. The King studio suite we had was well appointed for what it was. We particularly liked the spacious bathroom space.
4. Bed was comfy, if a tad soft, with a plethora of pillows - five!
5. For someone staying several days, the full size kitchenette (big fridge, etc) could come in handy.
6. For someone staying several days, generous closet space would come in handy.
7. Good in room technology: free, if slow, wifi and flat screen TV.
8. Good location in Medford for popping out to convenient dinner at a couple of very good restaurants - see "TIPS" below.
9. Little outdoor patio off breakfast room off lobby could be a nice touch in warm weather.
10. Attractive pricing on our visit - $25 less than the Medford Hampton Inn.

Here's what we are not fans of in the Homewood format in general and this property specifically.

The "CONs":

1. For Homewood Suites, not only is breakfast included in the room rate, you also have padded in the cost of a "Manager's Reception" that is offered between 5:30 and 7:30 from Mon - Thurs. This is similar to what Residence Inn does in their protocol. We're not fans of it there either. Mediocre or lesser quality food served in cafeteria style set up. We'd rather have the cost deducted from the room rate and let folks have the option to purchase the eats at on-prem restaurant (a la Hilton Garden Inn) if they really want to eat hotel food.

2. On this site, a huge property with only two elevators far removed from lobby at ends of the building to serve all four floors.

3. Given this is a huge property, the need to pack cars into the lot like sardines in a can means tight parking spaces to maneuver.

TIPS:

1. For best room assignments, avoid 02 (202, 302, 402) and 33 (233, 333, 433) designations which are right next to elevator. Also 03 and 30 designations which are right across. For quietest rooms that look out to open space behind for improved privacy, consider asking for room assignments in the 15 - 31 range and on upper (third or fourth) floors (415, 417, 419...etc.)

2. Only about 20 miles to Ashland, and very easy off / on access to the freeway, this provides a handy and good value alternative to some of the more rustic and more spendy Ashland lodging options.

3. Larsen Creek Shopping Center is only about 3 miles away and in addition to conveniences, like SNAP fitness and a grocery store, that little strip mall is home to two really good local restaurants - Vinny's Italian Kitchen and Bambu (Asian fusion).

After a 9 hour drive from Seattle to Medford, we rested at the Hilton and was quite impressed. The room was quite large, and included a double burner stove, a microwave oven and a large fridge. It was modernly decorated. The bed was quite soft and felt very "homey". Their evening reception and breakfast buffet was pretty good. Their exercise room was better than many rooms. It was a bit more spacious compared to other hotels, and had the TVs connected to the machines like most gyms.
We thought we would have got a louder room, considering we were beside the elevator and exit on the 1st floor, but it was actually quite silent.
We initially were going to stay at the Quality Inn, but because of our bad experiences with this chain, we decided to pay the extra $40 a night to try something new. It was definately worth the change.

My husband and I completed a 12-hour drive and checked into the Homewood Suites in Medford. I made a pre-paid reservation online so the rate was very good ($129). When we arrived there were fresh cookies at the check-in desk -- wow. Then, we were told dinner would be served at 5:30 p.m. Dinner??? The website said something about snacks. So I told my husband we could check it out and if it wasn't any good, we could find something to eat. There was a hot dinner waiting for us -- rice pilaf, steamed carrots, chicken and spinach in a cream sauce, wine, beer (local beers on tap). What a treat, we didn't have to go out. The next morning, we found a hot breakfast waiting for us at 6:30 a.m. before we started the last leg of our trip. So enough about food....the room was large -- King bed, sleeper sofa, table & chairs, desk and a small kitchen with frig, stove top, dishwasher, mcrowave. It was clean and new. The bed was very comfortable. So, we will definitely be back. PS: be sure to put the address that is noted in red type on the website into your GPS. It is different than the address that the hotel is listed under.
