“Rustic Little Lodge”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 June 2013

I second everything said in the previous review, entitled "Thanksgiving Dinner in September." The accommodations are very simple, but comfortable. The wall between the two units in the duplex we stayed in was pretty thin. Luckily the people staying next door were friends. Food was very good and very plentiful. This is not a fancy place, but a great place to spend some quiet time enjoying nature.

My family and I, husband and two offspring (17 and 21), had a serious need to hit the Rogue River for a three day, two night raft trip a few weeks ago. It was later in the season and pretty cold at night so we opted to stay at lodges rather than camp. What a nice idea. Now before you read too far, you have to understand that Black Bar Lodge is accessible by river or by foot or floatplane or... arduously over tough terrain and four wheeling (sort of). The lodge has to be run in a super sustainable way. Generator powered lights and electricity are available from until 10:00PM, then again from 6:30AM. There is a vegetable garden in the front, protected from hungry deer, and it produced some of the finest tomatoes I have ever eaten. (that is saying something since I am a fussy gardener with scads of heirlooms in my yard.) You can;t use hair dryers or other electrical equipment which produce a large "load" on the generator power system. You can't use your cell phone. All these things are "Excellent" in my opinion. The accommodations are rustic but comfortable, and range from really basic to a little bit more than that. We stayed in a building that had two rooms, one for us and one for the offspring. The walls are thin in that building, e.g. we could hear each other's conversations, but that was OK since the kids didn't know we were listening. Hahah! Score one for the parents. If you are traveling alone, and you want your privacy, ask for something else. For us, it was just fine. We had as much hot water as we could use, the beds were comfortable and the towels were line dried so they smelled good but were a little scratchy. No matter. The food is a standout here. There were cookies and hot drinks when we came in from the river, and dinner was a full- on Thanksgiving dinner with turkey, stuffing, mash, gravy, home-made biscuits, home grown tomatoes, salad, squash, enchiladas and finally a peach cobbler. One note, they do not serve alcohol, so you have to bring your own, We staggered away from the table managed to stay awake long enough to see the Milky Way in all its glory. The next morning, we had coffee, eggs, ham steaks, pancakes, breakfast biscuits, hashbrowns, toast, homemade jam and juice. I'm sure there was more than to eat, but I think i was in a food coma by then. The people who run this place do it because they love it and it shows. Our server called my daughter " honey" and she plied my son with extra everything. Find a reason to raft the Rogue and stay here. You'll be glad you did.

Room Tip: Its rustic, so set your expectations for that. And ask if you are concerned about what would work b...
