The Painted Hills Vacation Rentals

Went to eastern Oregon to see the John Day fossil beds, which I had been to before but not for several years. Stayed at the larger cottage with friends. It was so delightful. The cottage has such a comfortable feel. Full kitchen was nice -- complete with spices and olive oil -- but the garden was the best part. Places to sit and read or ponder the meaning of the universe. Beds were comfortable, and the shower was large.

Great flowers -- poppies, columbine, and peonies were in bloom when we visited. Our host was available but never intrusive, and takes great pride in the cottage and the garden. I had no telephone service AT&T and the wireless in the cottage kind of came and went. However, for me, those were advantages not disadvantages. Great place.

We stayed for 2 nights at the Painted Hills Guest Cottage with friends. We really enjoyed being so close to the Painted Desert and John Day Fossil Beds. Barb and Aruna's place is very comfortable and fun. The garden/outside area is lovely, the beds are really comfy, there's lots of great information provided, books on the area and history. Landscapes painted by Barbara's husband make you feel part of this amazing setting. The town has a small grocery and place or 2 to eat, and the cottage is above the town with a view of the sagebrush covered hills. Thank you for the lovely stay, Barbara and Aruna!

My friend's family and my family stayed in the Painted Hills vacation homes for two nights. We enjoyed every minute of it. And when it was time to leave, the only regret we had was that we were leaving too soon. My 4-year-old son said to me on the way back, "We will come back again, and this time we will stay for TEN days."

My friend's family took the Painted Hills cottage, as they have more people. We stayed in the Hollyhock Guest house. The house is quite old, I give you that. And the bedroom is a bit small. The bed is comfortable, but a bit small for us, because my son co-sleeps with us. We even tried to make him sleep in his friend's room in the bigger cottage, where the two boys can each have their own bed but share a room. Though he prefers to spend every minute of waking time with his best friend, when it's night time, he wants mommy and daddy. So, the size of the bed is not what I liked most about the house.

But that is no problem. Not when everything else is so perfect. The garden is breathtaking! I could spend all day just walking in the garden and taking in every inch of beauty and freshness in every corner, or simply sitting on my front porch, enjoying all the pleasure that sunshine, breeze, a masterpiece of a garden, food, family, and great friends can give you, feeling so free and relaxed,

Our children had a blast! They spent most of their time exploring the fenced-in ground, chasing each other, chasing the neighbor's cat, running soaking wet around the lawn sprinkler, playing hide and seek (a lot of times not intentionally, the place is just too big for them to keep track of each other). The garden and the two houses and the game room became a maze, a palace for them. They were boys in Wonderland!

The owners are so friendly and nice. They made us feel very welcomed. And a lot of details in the homes and the garden show their thoughtfulness. They make their guests feel at home and at ease. Things may not be in the best shape or the most luxury, but they are comfortable.

Before we went there, we weren't sure if it was going to be a good trip. Because we weren't sure if there were going to be many interesting things to do or see in the area to justify the 4.5 hours drive to get there. But now we wish we stayed longer. We had a great time hiking at Painted Hills and digging for fossils. But for me, the vacation homes alone would draw me back again, and again.

Our end of the world 12/21/2012 retreat We arrived late after a four hour drive from Portland. The cottage was so bright and warm and welcoming, we immedidatley felt relaxed and delighted. The kitchen was fully stocked with great plates and cups and bowls that mkade our food taste even better. The kitchen had everything we needed. The beds were delicioius as was the shower. The garden was asleep, waiting for spring. We received a welcoming phone call to make sure we were in and comfortable. There is a terrific selection of movies the four of us enjoyed at night, unless we went out to star gaze the milky way.

The John Day Fossil Beds should be seen atleast once in your lifetime. The Painted Hills were only five minutes away, and the Paleolithic Museum and Blue Basin about 30 minutes away.
The whole experience was 'mind torqueing' history tour.

We are looking forward to a spring or summer visit when the garden wakes up and the John Day River is ready to be fished.

Thank you for your enthusiastic review. We do agree - Winter season is a special time out here in Eastern Oregon. Everything slows down even more and time seems to stop all together. The snow covered landscapes become mystical places and hiking in the Painted Hills, along the frozen John Day River or Blue Basin is just magic. And when you return from a great outdoor adventure, the cozy cottage awaits you to cook, read, play games, watch a movie, and just relax. We're so happy you came and enjoyed it!

We've heard so much about this area around the John Day River and have wanted to visit since years. Finally we found time this October and when friends gave us the wonderful tip of making a reservation with the Painted Hills Vacation Rentals, my husband and I booked the Hollyhock Guest House for the last 4 days of October. We had a great time! We just adored the comfy and very clean cottage with the golden autumn peeking into all the windows from the garden. What a special little gem and so close to our home in Bend. We will definitely come more often now that we have discovered this special place. The other cottage is bigger and would be great for our family reunion in summer.
Thanks to the owners for thinking of all the little details to make our stay even more memorable.

Thank you Mary for your positive review and for getting the word out to all the people from Bend that there is such a great and adventurous place just around the corner. It's actually just 1.5 hours away from Mitchell to downtown Bend and its well worth the trip. Especially autumn is such a special season out here with warm light and deeper shadows. Thanks for mentioning the garden too. It's truly spectacular as every plant and tree gives its best one more time before its time to go to sleep. We're looking forward to welcome you back here soon, spring or summer, autumn or winter.... It's all magic!

I would recommend the cottage to anyone who would like to stay in a simple, comfortable, clean, and spacious two bedroom house with a very nice bathroom and sun porch, a very quaint kitchen with everything in it you could want, including a fair quantity of staples, and good appliances, (no dishwasher), a beautiful and fragrant flower garden with a small apple orchard, washer and dryer, extensive VHS collection, (which we never used, due to always being out exploring...). The floor coverings looked new. The shower was extra good, and good taps in the kitchen, too. The appliances are good. The kitchen is not modern, (in fact the cabinets are truely 'collectible'! In a GOOD way). It is clean and very charming. There were heaters, but we never used them. The windows are new. The area is extremely quiet and appears very safe. The garden is very private and lovely. The owner went well out of her way to help us with a special request. We never met her, but she was available. If I return to this area, I will certainly try to stay here. The only possible fault I can report is that some of the floors are somewhat uneven. This did not bother us, but if two people were in the front bedroom bed, it does slope a little. Maybe put a wedge under one bedframe leg. Really, this is fairly minor. I really did not want to leave this place and wish we could have stayed there longer. It's a great location to explore the Painter Hills from and the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument, well worth a visit. It is extremely quiet here and restful.

the very special landscape in Easter Oregon. My daughter and I stayed at the Hollyhock Guest House, a very comfy and adorable cottage and were absolutely in love with the place. Just to sit on the porch in the morning, looking into the colorful floral garden and watch the birds and butterflies was magic. The owners were very helpful and gave us fresh eggs from there chickens for breakfast and the best grapes fresh from the little garden surrounding the cottage. This is the greatest place to stay when you're coming this direction to explore the Painted Hills and the other units of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument. We will be back for sure!
