My spouse, a wheelchair-user and ADA consultant, and I traveled to Newberg with family as a graduation trip for their adult daughter, to do wine-tasting in the Willamette Valley. I'd booked the same room type -- two queen beds -- but specified one to be ADA wheelchair accessible. We called ahead and confirmed, as wheelchair users are generally advised to do... no problems.
Upon arrival, we were warmly greeted and given rooms across the hall from each other. The ADA room was spacious and comfortable, with decent sized bathroom with grab bars and tub with small portable shower bench (not as sturdy as we'd recommend, but...). All rooms seem to put the sink outside the bathroom, which is a hassle but some folks like the ability to brush teeth while someone else showers.
BUT: the pillow-top beds were far too high for a wheelchair user to use singlehanded. At 27" high, they were well above wheelchair seat height.
We asked the young gal at reception if there were any lower beds in the place, and were told they were Travelodge standard issue. We resigned ourselves to my helping with a major assisted lift onto the bed, and went to meet the family. To our surprise and relief, their beds were a full 3.5" lower. The bathroom door was just wide enough for the wheelchair to scoot in (if not close the door), and there was just enough space between the beds to manage.
In the morning, we ran across the manager, Mr. Bhat, and explained our problem with the high beds. He explained that Travelodge had dinged him for the lower beds, which were scheduled to be replaced, but when we showed him the problem, he immediately grasped the issue. A win-win solution: he plans to move one of the lower beds into the ADA room, to give guests a truly Universal Design solution. If you need a higher bed, you get one. If you need an easier transfer, you get one, too.
We'll be writing to Travelodge/Wyndham HQ about this. If you're short or have similar mobility problems, you might want to do the same, and recommend they give a choice of bed heights in all their 2-bed ADA rooms.
