University House of Newberg
Ranked #5 of 7 Newberg B&B and Inns
Reviewed 10 May 2010

My husband, adult son, and I recently stayed for the second time at University House. What a little known jewel in the historic town of Newberg, home to George Fox University. As indicated, it is right across the street from the university which allowed us great access to the graduation activities for our daughter without ever moving the car. When you reserve the University House, you are the sole residents - a three bedroom, two story home all to yourselves. It couldn't have been more carefully thought out to ensure the guests have everything they could possibly need for a relaxing stay. It is just like staying with family without having to deal with weird Uncle Harold. Our hostess Leigh was there when we arrived late from the airport. She made sure we knew where everything was located - hot tub controls, extra pillows, alarm system, extra toilet paper, etc. We knew she was available if we needed her but truly felt welcome to relax in our fully furnished home away from home in solitude. We had the option of a continental breakfast each morning or doing it ourselves. The full kitchen was competely stocked. We've been to Newberg numerous times getting our daughter settled at the university but this time found a great new restaurant close by - Subterra had great food, good wine, and a cozy atmosphere that lent itself to great conversation. With the wine country expanding each time we visit Oregon, University House is close to several wineries open for tastings. We sampled Laurel Ridge's offerings and had a personal tour of their facilities. As everywhere in Oregon, we are always pleasantly surprised by the constant friendliness shown. Overall, we had a great experience at the University House and will definately stay there if we are in the Willamette Valley area again.

During my husband and my recent visit to Yamhill County we enjoyed the wineries, so many to choose from. We even drove to the ocean, it was a beautiful drive. Our stay at the University House was wonderful! We loved our walks in the morning, lounging in the hot tub and cozy nights by the fire. We felt right at home. It was so clean, very private and very nice. We can’t wait to stay there again next year.

What a find! The best ever! When coming to "wine country" we wanted the whole experience, we found it here at "University House". The house is warm and beautifully appointed with antiques and charm. Best, you have the house to yourselves. We felt so special. Our host, Leigh Wellikoff, was wonderful and made sure that all of our comforts were met. Her advise on the nearby wineries, large & small, was invaluable. We plan on doing this again year after year. Of course, we will stay at the University house!

I loved the University House because it was like staying as a guest in someone's house, without actually having to bother the host. Leigh Wellikoff, the owner, was extremely gracious. She runs the place as though you were guests in a house, setting out everything you need, and giving you run of the place. She makes great breakfasts, and is willing to go the extra mile to help, even going out to pick up Chinese food one evening for me so that I could watch a hockey playoff game.
The house itself is beautifully adorned, but not fussy. It is comfortable, with an office that can be used for work, or a living room for reading or watching television, if you get sick of watching it in your own room.
I was there on business, but would quickly go back and make it a base for a day of visiting the Willamette Valley Wineries.

What a great experience for our "girls" birthday weekend getaway. Leigh was so accomodating from the reservation process all the way through our departure. We felt like we were relatives in her B and B. Such charm, warmth, and hospitality in this home of her families antique furniture including all the way to the dishes, light fixtures and pictures. We enjoyed the goodies left in the frig, the homemade cinnamon rolls and relaxing in the outdoor hot tub after our "vigorous" wine tasting afternoons. It was the perfect location and great community to walk around in. Leigh offered wonderful advice on where to eat and what wineries not to miss. This is a great place for giving you privacy with your own bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and exclusive use of the whole house. It has been so tastefully decorated and we loved her willingness to share this glimpse of the Pennsylvanian life she grew up with. Whether coming back with my girlfriends, husband or family, I look forward to another stay at the University House.
Thanks!
Kathy from Mount Vernon, WA.

As Newberg, OR is in the heartbeat of Oregon Wine Country, a small group of us decided to visit for the wine trails. Finding the B&B on the web was score number 1. When talking with the innkeeper, she ws very informative and so helpful. We took all her advise for which wineries to visit and were not disappointed at all. Staying at the B&B was the icing on the cake. The house was adorable. The setting was peaceful. The innkeeper herself was wonderful. The warm hot tub, the antiques, the most awesome cinnamon rolls. I swear I died and went to heaven. The weekend was definitely relaxing and I can't thank Leigh enough for being a great B&B host and travel guide! I can't wait to go back!

Stayed for one night at this lovely property. Warm and inviting. Good beds, dreamy fireplace, lots of room to spread out. Breakfast was delicious homemade cinnamon rolls with fruit and premium coffees. Owner Leigh is a gracious hostess, very friendly, and can give loads of recommendations for restaurants, etc. in the area.

Would definitely stay here again!
