We stayed in this park for the free 3 day/nights Thousand Trails offers. We were so impressed with it, we didn't even need the sales pitch. We bought our membership on the spot in Aug of 08. Since then we average at least one week end a month there, and two weeks over Christmas and New years.

This park is close to everything we love about the Oregon coast, and is right across the street from the beach. The staff is VERY friendly, helpful and go out of their way to make sure the guests are taken care of.

The spots are not unlike any other campgrounds, and some spots are better then others. We have stayed in State parks, County parks and private parks. Hands down this membership is the best thing we have bought to add to the pleasure of RVing.

We live near Albany and are Thousand Trails members. We go to Whalers rest all the time. The people who work there have become like family to us, they are all very pleasant and try hard to make your stay a good one. Most of them know us and many of the guests by name. It is a short walk across the street to the beach and a short 15 or less minutes to Newport. They always have fun activities for the adults and the kids. They have a nice little store with gifts and goodies. We've never had trouble getting a spot and love that about being a member. Public campgrounds have become almost impossible to get into, especially if you work and have to head out with the other hundreds of people for a weekend or holiday. I gave them a rating of a 4 instead of 5 because they could do some updating to their parks, but this is a campground, not the hilton:) I had to put in a review because the other people really did not show a true image of this park or the people who run it. We truly do love Whalers rest and always look forward to our long weekends and vacations there and recommend you try them yourself and don't listen to one persons bad review.

We were referred to Thousand Trails by a member and decided to try one of their "Preserves" just south of Newport. At first glance, the place looks nice - lots of trees, very green. The problem is with the RV sites themselves and the staff. We arrived after dinner and it was starting to get dark -- the staff at the front gate told us to just pick any available spot and let them know where we landed -- no recommendations, nothing. Then the girl at the gate stuck her hand out and said "5 bucks for cable TV". We handed over the $5 and started looking for a spot -- they were all mostly very narrow and spaced so closely together you could look into your neighbor's motorhome. After we parked in a space and were mostly situated, we found that the cable for the TV had been cut and was inoperable. We were tired at that point and didn't want to move, so we called it a night. In the morning, walking around the "Preserve", we noticed that the grounds and sites were not well-maintained, there were some RV's that looked like they had been parked there for YEARS. People hadn't cleaned up after their dogs, there was no cell phone or internet access -- a real disappointment. For this "free" stay, you had to attend a sales presentation. The salesperson was nice enough, but very inexperienced and started off with 10 minutes about himself. We finally had to stop him and let him know that this "Preserve" was not for us -- the week before we had stayed at the Crown Villa in Bend and it was like night and day to this place. We offered to pay for the night we had been there, minus the $5 for the cable that never worked. He stopped in his tracks, called his boss in and his boss literally threw the money back at us and told us that we would have to leave. We were more than happy to -- we weren't planning on spending another night. Once we were back in cell phone access, we called Pacific Shores to see if they had a spot. We are now at that resort and it is fabulous. What a difference! I would never recommend Thousand Trails to ANYONE if the rest of their resorts are as bad as Whaler's Rest.
