This is a nice hotel with a great setting. Although there is a frontage road in front, it does not take away from the whole experience. You can walk to the beach within minutes and enjoy a wonderful beach stroll. We enjoyed the convenience of walking downtown for some delicious clam chowder (or fancy sit down if that is what you want). The added bonus was the lovely sunsets and the little window one can keep open all night to hear the ocean! The hotel could use some updating, but it is clean and well maintained. Friendly, helpful staff, too! Loved staying there and we plan to go back next year and stay even longer.

Room Tip: Third floor has the best views.

What a find! The whaler had everything we needed. Although it is technically not on the beach, it still has a great view with a balcony! Room was clean and pleasant. The morning breakfast was more than adequate. The best bonus is that it was close enough to the local retail/dining area so we were able to walk and drive! I would definitely stay at the whaler again.

The staff is great: very friendly and helpful. All rooms have balconies with good views that face the ocean. There is a small pile of rocks on the nearby beach which creates a wonderful tide pool to view the treasures of the ocean. The beach here is decently flat for some distance if one wants to have a good walk/jog.
Although the price is a bit higher than similar hotels, we return to this hotel whenever we come to Newport. We have never had an issue with cleanliness and in the off-season it is quiet and peaceful. Many nice restaurants are within walking distance as is the historic Yaquina Bay Lighthouse, and it is a short drive to the old bayfront district, Aquarium and Hatfield Science Center.
I would give this facility a 5 star rating if the continental breakfast had a bit more offering besides just bread products. We have stayed in comparable places along the coast for as much as $30 less per night which had a greater variety of menu items.
All-in-all, The Whaler is an excellent choice if you want great views, easy beach access, nearby dining and sight-seeing.

Room Tip: The second and third floors are best for ocean viewing. If you don't mind being a bit farther from the lobby, the rooms toward the north have better views in that you aren't overlooking the beach house rentals below.

We stayed at the Whaler for one night as part of our trip north up the coast of OR. We found the rooms comfortable and clean, and opted for a balcony room overlooking the ocean. We cracked open a bottle of wine and watched one of the prettiest sunsets of our trip on the balcony. The bonus was the pool and the hot tub (especially the hot tub) after riding in the car all day. The staff was very friendly, helpful, and professional. Breakfast was Spartan but nice. A great find!

My husband and I stay at the Whaler every time we visit Newport for the weekend, which is probably every other year. We have a chocolate lab who loves the cost and this is one of the more dog friendly hotels, so that is why we choose it. It might not be the most luxurious motel in Newport, but it is reasonably priced, clean, and comfortable. The staff here is amazing: Super friendly and helpful. There is a little workout room, pool, and hot tub that we always take advantage of. We love the continental breakfast. They have trays so you can take it up to your room. Which I love, because my husband can never get up early enough for the breakfast, so I like bringing something up for him to have when he wakes up. The rest of the day they have free popcorn! Also, each room has a small balcony overlooking the ocean, and there is a little trail down to Nye beach from the hotel. Very nice.
It was very quiet and relaxing.
