“Perfect location, amazing food”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 June 2013

We spent two nights in the Gertrude Stein room, which was a good value but a bit small for my husband and me. Next time we'll splurge and stay in Colette! What makes the hotel stand out is its beachfront restaurant which has a marvelous chef. The four entrees--beef, chicken, fish, vegetarian--change nightly, and your selection must be made by 4:00 p.m. My husband, a friend, and I chose a private table (we could have sat with other inn guests but didn't want to play the "four lies" game) and our food was served family style. Our friend had the beef dish--steak florentine--and my husband and I had salmon with blueberry chutney, which we both agreed was the most unique and delicious salmon preparation we've ever tasted. Accompaniments included bread, salad, and mashed potatoes, and dessert was an outrageously good parfait with chocolate sauce and raspberries. At $25 for three courses, it's the best bargain on the Oregon coast!

This unusual, historic hotel, positioned on a cliff right above an extensive, sandy beach - offers lodgers the opportunity to spend the night with a well-known author. From Shakespeare to Gertrude Stein to Doctor Seuss - rooms are decorated with photos, memorabilia, etc of famous writers.
The excellent location in Newport's historic Nye Beach area offers visitors the options of strolling past shops, galleries and restaurants in refurbished turn of the century buildings, as well as taking a long walk on the extensive beach. Explore tide pools near the rocks at low tide or walk towards the Yaquina Head lighthouse.

Guests at the Sylvia Beach Hotel may enjoy a multi-course dinner for an additional, reasonable price (about $23). The abundant breakfast is included in the price of the room.

I stayed in the small Gertrude Stein room - which did not have a view - but the price was right just over $100 (with breakfast). The hotel's assortment of rooms varies and so does their price. The larger Colette room, for example, - with an ocean view, balcony and lovely furniture - cost in the mid $200s.

As a single traveler on a multi-day trip down the coast, I was pleased with my smaller room and very much enjoyed the delicious breakfast of fruits, sweets, eggs, special bacon etc etc - at a table with other guests.

This informal, unique hotel is a bit well-worn and not for someone seeking a five star, exquisite lodging. But it's a fun place to stay in a historic building, close to the beach with good food and friendly staff.

My daughter and I spent two nights at the hotel, one in the Jane Austen room which was lovely and one in the J K Rowling room which was great fun. All of the rooms that we saw were cleverly decorated and definitely appropriate for the authors. The living room (overlooking the ocean), library and puzzle room are very relaxing and peaceful. A real bonus is the closet full of rain gear, hats, and gloves for the guests. Nye Beach is a wonderful area for a getaway.

A great place to unwind! With its many tasteful and thoughtfully decorated rooms, each boasts a theme of an author whose works are found within. There are multi-levels of treasures including cozy places to relax, read, view the beautiful ocean, browse the gift shop, or dine in their lovely restaurant! All affordably priced and worth going again and again!

We make an annual pilgrimage to the Sylvia Beach Hotel from Portland to escape the stress of the city and turn off the blackberries for a weekend. Each time we visit, we are enchanted by the rooms and delighted by the exceptional dinner (don't make a mistake and choose a restaurant in town - a four course meal for $23 a person can't be beat). We spent the first night in Melville - a spacious room on the 3rd floor with two big reading chairs facing the ocean. The bathroom was little and the floor sloped a bit, but the charm of the room and the scenery more than compensated. Our second night we moved down a floor to Amy Tan - a newer room beautifully appointed with Chinese art and furniture. One great thing about this place is no matter the weather - we've been in heavy storms (you stay in, play games, read in the library) or in dazzling sunshine (you walk miles on the beach in either direction and watch the tides go out and come back in and wait for the sunset). There is no shortage of creativity, imagination and community here. Its the place I go back to when I remember what it's like to live without electronics, to read, to think, to be at peace. Thank you again for a lovely weekend.

Although it was a few years ago, I spent several days here whilst attending the Newport Wine Festival. It was such a blessing to be away from TV and to be surrounded by wonderful peace and quiet. Each room is dedicated to a different author, and the two suites with fireplaces were AWESOME! Right next to the beach, it was a great place to relax and make new friends. Just as wonderful to sit as the rain came down outside surrounded by books and lots of relaxing overstuffed chairs and sofas to read or play board games with friends. I particularly enjoyed their wonderful restaurant downstairs. The food was worthy of a four-star restaurant and I cannot wait to go back with some of my literate friends for another visit.

Room Tip: The Mark Twain and Colette suites were fabulous, with fireplaces and lots of room, as well as big wi...

Clean, quiet, comfortable, fun, friendly staff. My daughter & I are trying to make it a Mother's Day tradition. We both love the quiet comfort of this place. We even plan a private tea for ourselves in the Library while we visit & watch the ocean. The food is terrific too. I can't say enough good about Sylvia Beach Hotel.

Room Tip: I've stayed in the Jane Austin-great for a single person stay & the view was great!
