This is a lovely place to relax. Each room is decorated differently and it's fun to arrive early, walk through the hotel, and peak in each room (they leave the doors open until guests arrive.) The breakfast is hearty and fun to sit with other guests. The dinner is delicious and again, fun to dine with other guests. The upstairs library has a beautiful ocean view. Hotel is close to shops and on the beach. If you're looking for luxury, this is not the place for you, but if you want quaint and charming, you'll love it!

The Sylvia Beach Hotel is the perfect place to decompress and get inspired! We stayed in the classic Agatha Christie room. Our view of the ocean was spectacular. We loved the sunset from our large wrap-around balcony, and were lulled to sleep listening to the ocean. We thoroughly enjoyed the interactive scavenger hunt, which was enhanced by contributions from previous guests. The Table of Contents dinner is an absolute must to complete this memorable experience. One night was not enough time, but the warmth of our hosts definitely made us feel at home. We can't wait to return again and again.

Room Tip: The Agatha Christie room was blissfully relaxing, charming and entertaining. Highly recommend this...

We have been going to the Sylvia Beach Hotel for well over 20 years. Our first room was Herman Melville and it was the beginning of a long and happy adventure with the hotel. We have stayed in pretty much every room with a queen sized bed or larger and even a couple of rooms with double beds. Most recently we stayed in Mark Twain and in Colette and, as always it was a delightful experience. One of the fun things you can do is switch rooms on a daily basis.
For example: a night in Agatha Christie followed by Jules Verne and J.K. Rowling. Each room with it's own distinct décor and mood - what fun! We always go in the "off season" and the stormier the weather the better. It gives you a good excuse to snuggle in the library in front of the fireplace with the special book you have been saving to read at the hotel. Part of the Sylvia Beach experience is their restaurant "The Tables of Content". Dinner is served family style with 5-8 people at a table. You sit down as strangers and walk away as friends after an evening of lively conversation or after playing "The Game". Dining choices usually are 4 entrees to accommodate various tastes and diets and all other components from salad to dessert being in common. The food is consistently excellent and we have never had a meal that we did not enjoy.
We try to go at least once a year and twice if schedules allow and always try to stay for 3 days at a time. We will continue to go as long as we are able, it is our all-time favorite getaway!.

Room Tip: There are no bad rooms. 3 are suites with private deck and fireplace. Some rooms have an ocean vie...

The only bad thing about the Sylvia Beach is that it has ruined me for any other hotel or motel! My husband and I have fallen in love with the peace and quiet, the books (library & reading room), the puzzle & game room with tea available all day, the evening mulled wine, the amazing (special diets respected) dinners...and the quiet - did I mention the quiet?
The special tradition of leaving a little hidden gift for the next guest - write your own map or poem to help them find it! The journals in every room, inviting both reading and writing.
There is inspiration and imagination everywhere. Without the tyrannical, insistent intrusion of electronics, time stops at Sylvia Beach, and after our first stay, we both felt truly rested for the first time in memory. Thank heaven for this place. It truly feels like coming home.

Room Tip: If you have trouble navigating stairs, stay on the main floor ONLY! Even the dining room is downstai...

20 years ago I stayed SBH for the first time, love, love love it. And again was able to get back to the pacific coastline in 2012 to stay again. It is a unique experience that non other hotel can ever provide. Each room decorated in its own creative unique style. It is located in a pleasant quiet area on a cliff by the ocean. The charm is unbelieveable. Meeting interesting people there are part of the experience as your breakfast is at family style tables, on the ocean side. The food is great. Do experience one of their evening meals. The second time visiting found the town more quaint touristy than 20 years ago, but still keeping charm. If your roaming up the coastline, plan to stay here a few days you will not regret it. Hope one day to get back again. Keep up the good work.

Room Tip: This time I chose the room with the garden door and deck. Was a good choice to keep my wine chilled...

I have stayed here many times in the 1990's and enjoyed it very much. The rooms are all named after, and decorated in the style of', (mostly) famous authors. Breakfast comes with the room, and dinner, with fellow guests, is good and good fun. My problem is that there are long stairs to negotiate with your luggage and no help, and many of the baths have no shower. Management apparently doesn't care about that because reservations are difficult to get.

Room Tip: Ask for amenities. Don't choose just because you like the author Only the three most expensive...

We stayed here as we passed through on our trip up the coast. The service was ok as the front desk staff seemed bother by our prescence. The location is nice on a good day when the water is visible. The twin is easy to navigate from this location.
