“Cozy retreat with a throwback to older era.”
Reviewed 8 February 2012

My family stayed over a long holiday weekend (mlk) and we lucked out with the first real snow. We got the hotel room and it was a bit dated and woodsy but ample in size. You can hear "critters" in the walls from time to time: squirrels was our guess but there was no evidence of them in the rooms. The service was friendly and they do go out of their way to make you feel welcome. We ate in the lodge for dinner one night. They were eager to please and I wish the food were better but didn't have the heart to tell them it was just ok (and over priced). I would stay here again but get a room with a kitchenette. The proximity to Hood River and mt hood meadows is a big plus. Just know going into it that it's a quaint little mtn resort and go with it.

Yes, our hotel rooms are a bit “dated and woodsy” but we kind of like to be different and original ~ kind of like staying at someone’s cabin in the woods. With the differing weather outside and being in the woods – we sometimes get little characters who decide that it is just a bit warmer and a bit snugger inside the walls of our units. Little buggers ~ we try to evict them, but they keep coming back with more baggage. I sure am glad that they didn't make themselves known on the insides of the unit.
With our new remodeled restaurant and the Crooked Tree Tavern, we strive to make our food different and always achieving to make it better. We have a tremendous happy hour menu, which changes periodically so that we always seem to have something new refreshing.

We stayed in the lodge which was very dark and not very impressive. We were there because we were attending a wedding close by and there are few places to stay in that area. I can't comment on how the rest of the resort cabins are. We had no view because there is a covered hallway that caters to skiers. This place is probably perfect for skiers, but wasn't so great for us. There are no breakfast places nearby and there was no microwave in the room. If I were to stay again, it would no be in the lodge.

Thank you for your comments on our fully covered and enclosed hallway. This is due to the sometimes excessive feet of snow we get here in the winter months, as it keeps it away from the windows, doors and such. This is a safety item that we are actually proud of, due to the fact that we don’t have to shovel out the windows to keep them from bowing in and ultimately possibly shattering due to the heavy snow load. I guess that skiers would like these, but so do our other guests as well.
We have recently added breakfast & lunch to our menus on the weekends and holidays but we always are open for dinner (unless a private function has rented the dining room). We are somewhat remote, and yes, the closest breakfast establishments are located in the small town of Parkdale, which is actually only 8 miles north of us here. The small town of Parkdale does also have 3 additional lunch spots as well as 3 dinner spots in addition to the breakfast, lunch and bakery out at the junction of Hwy 35 and the north entrance of Cooper Spur Road. We may be remote, but we do have a lot to offer within just a few minute drive.
In addition to adding more amenities to our rooms (mini friges) we have made microwave carts in the enclosed hallways for our guests use. Our housekeeping staff is very proud of their microwave stations complete with additional cups, bowls, silverware as well as extra coffee for our guests enjoyment.

Our family came to stay the night in hopes of snow, and stayed in one of the condo's. It was very cozy, clean, and comfortable. The staff was amazing! They helped with choosing the perfect accommodations, helping with our fire, and checkout was a breeze. We used the hot tub under the stars at night and in the morning while it was snowing. What a surprise to wake and find it snowing with a few inches on the ground. We highly recommend staying and we will definitely be back!

This is a great review. Thank you so much! We also love the condo’s – as you can sleep up to 8 people, which is an average of two families. You can all stay in the same unit with a shared kitchenette, common living area complete with fireplace as well as have separate areas like the upstairs lofts and bedrooms. Not that we get to use them much as employees, but the fact that we have almost zero light pollution up here, the stars from the hot tubs during the night, are simply amazing!! It would also be great during a meteor shower or for some other night sky viewing opportunities. They are even more magical when it is snowing. Thanks again and we hope to see you soon.

My family of four stayed in the large Log Cabin. We spent every evening in the jacuzzi tub staring up at Mt Hood. We couldn't believe the view. From the front door you get a view of Mt Adams. Wow - GREAT location!

YES – we have to totally agree with you on the views!! Wouldn’t it be nice to actually live up here and have this view every day? Out one side you have an almost unobstructed view of Mt. Hood and the other way, you have a great view of Mt. Adams. If the house had another floor, we might even be able to see either Mt. Rainier or possibly even Mt. St. Helens. It is a spectacular view to behold!

My extended family and I rented one of the larger cabins here during the summer and loved it. We had multiple generations staying and the location was perfect for both young and old. The proximity to great hiking trails in the summer and skiing in the winter can't be beat. We had one meal at the lodge which worked well for us as it was served buffet style. The other days we cooked in our cabin and then enjoyed our meals on the back porch with Mt. Hood looming over us. Overall, I'd say this is an ideal place for families in any season. Highly recommended!

Room Tip: Small cabins looked cozy, but probably not a first choice if you're sharing with others and want...

This is one of the great things about our cabins and condos! You can stay with another family and still have enough room to relax and enjoy yourselves. With the hiking, mountain biking and such ~ literally directly out your back doors, we have a great asset that we treasure. In the winter, we have snowshoeing, cross country skiing out the same back doors, while the little downhill ski area of Cooper Spur is just up the road and we offer a complimentary ski shuttle.
With the Restaurant and Crooked Tree Tavern onsite, you can enjoy a relaxing fine dining experience or watch the game on one of the big tv’s in the Tavern and partake in a very reasonable Happy Hour menu. On weekends and holidays, we also offer breakfast and lunch options that are fit for any outdoor enthusiast.
Along with the cabin rentals, there is also a BBQ area open for all who are staying with us here at Cooper Spur.

This is a great little escape from Portland. You really feel like your away from it all. And the best part is Hood River is just down the road! Wine tasting, fruit, great food... etc!
Also great hikes in the area. Just off HWY 35 (south of Cooper Spur) to visit Tamanawas Falls. Round trip is 4 fairly easy miles. Beautiful shaded hike along stream - up to amazing falls that you can (carefully) hike behind.
Cooper Spur has it's own restaurant - but the offerings depend on the season/day of the week. Check with the front desk by phone- the web site is not always up to date in the shoulder season.
Our room was big - clean and quiet. Of course we when mid-week and we where almost alone at the property. They offer cabins for larger groups/families. There are newer hot tubs on the Hot Tub Deck. The views of the various Mt.s are amazing.
A great drive is to head up to Cloud Cap/Tilly Jane for sunset! The forest burned a few years ago on the last part of the (dirt/gravel) drive - but it's still an interesting and beautiful drive. From the top you view the sunset over the back (east) side of Mt Hood. St. Helens, Adams and even Rainier are in full view from this spot and Cooper Spur's yard.
A totally great escape!

Room Tip: Great online booking tool! Deals for ski/stay packages in winter.

Yes, I have to concur. We are a little escape from Portland up here in the mountains, surrounded by tall pine trees, beautiful hiking just outside our door and a yet a close proximity to other areas for wine tastings, breweries and tours as well as many local festivals.
One of my favorite hikes is the Tamawanas Falls ~ this is the one that I recommend to just about anyone of any age. This is a very beautiful hike with the falls at the end, a perfect end to a perfect hike on a hot day and also a great place to pack in a picnic lunch. Just remember = pack it in, pack it out.
We are always building on our menu and trying new items in our Restaurant and Crooked Tree Tavern. Our Chef is always coming up with something new, something crazy and also healthy and delicious.
I have also driven up to Cloud Cap Inn during the summer months to view sunrises, sunsets as well as the night sky. The views are amazing and virtually right in our back yard! On a nice clear day, you can see, it seems like forever – the mountain peaks of Adams, Rainier, St. Helens and Hood are spectacular. If your hike takes you to the right area, you might even be able to spot Jefferson down to our south. A great escape to a beautiful area makes one stop, think, contemplate and be thankful for those who saved these areas for us to enjoy.

My husband, son, and I decided to stay at the mountain after a day of skiing on Christmas, so we could ski again the next morning. We thought we were in luck since this place had a vacancy. At first it looked cozy in the woods. We had a "hotel" style room. Unfortunately these rooms are located under some large "condo" rooms. And in that large unit above us was a large, loud family. No insulation. We tried to go to sleep at 10pm, but continued to hear stomping and noise. Then we heard water dripping... turned on the lights... it was coming from the center of our ceiling! We called the groundskeeper, who was very nice, and were told the kids upstairs had been "splashing" in the bath. He asked them to be quiet. It was a big mess down below, so we were moved to the only other available room next door, which unfortunately was still under that condo. So the noise continued. I went up and also asked them to be quiet. We continued to hear stomping and loud conversations until early in the morning. The next morning we left early... explained the situation to the people at the front desk and requested our money back. The desk clerk said she had no authority to do any thing and would ask the manager to call us. Needless to say, we never heard from him. This was definitely in our top 5 worst hotel experiences... and we have traveled extensively!
Also, there is a restaurant which was OK. We found out after arriving that there is no breakfast on the premises. That would've been nice to know ahead of time.

WOW – I am so very sorry that your experience wasn't as pleasant as it could have been! With the condos directly above some units, this does happen with the floor noise from up above. Just like in other hotels, we too have noise problems. Sometimes, other peoples kids get a little excited about being on “vacation” and since they are not at home, they get a little messy and then let someone else clean it up.
I am also very so sorry that the old Management did not get back to you in a timely manner. I know that with our new management, we try to be very prompt and answer any emails, phone calls and such within a set timeline.
I too have to check with and get an okay from my Manager to be able to refund anything back after someone has used our facility, but we do this in a very timely and efficient manner.
Thank you so much for being so honest, direct and to the point.
