After driving all day with two kids this was exactly what we needed. We didn't arrive until after 9pm but they were ready for us. The place was very clean and had comfortable beds and a portable crib for our baby. I didn't hear any trains like I had read on other reviews but we were tired.
Breakfast was good. They had a highchair for the little one even. We will definately stay here again if driving through the area.

Planning a trip from Helena, Montana to Portland, Oregon, traveling alone with my 50-lb dog, I found Rugged Country Lodge on the Internet, read the reviews at this site, went to their website and was impressed. On top of being pet-friendly they also have free wireless Web access, so I reserved a room online.

I wasn't disappointed and was very pleased with the whole experience. Even though I had to go 30 miles (actually 60) out of my way to come here, it was worth it (I drive a Prius so the fuel cost wasn't a concern). The $69 single room was just the right size, plenty of room to move around in, two windows, nice bath, really comfy bed, beautiful furnishings, and the lavender is not only a symbol of relaxation, it soothed this road-weary traveler.

The down pillows were just what I needed for a sore neck (from driving for 7 hours). There are several good restaurants in Pendleton and the Great Pacific Wine and Coffee Co. had a wonderful smoked wild salmon caeser salad.

The continental breakfast was better than the usual fare at motels. Coffee was good (I usually make mine really strong and like espresso and while this wasn't that strong, it was good).

The train isn't right next to the motel and never bothered me. It actually goes pretty slowly through town and I like the sound of it. I never heard a loud whistle or horn. I happen to like trains and are glad they are still around. I liked watching the train out my window (my room was actually in the back of the motel, so it was quiet and I had a view of the hills rather than the parking lot). Seeing the train amble through town added to the experience of being in historic Pendleton.

I plan to stay here on my return trip to Montana and highly recommend it.

My wife and I just stayed at the Rugged Country Lodge after seeing its #1 rating at this site. The rating is well deserved! How nice to stay at a motel where the folks are genuinely proud of their business and lean over backwards to make sure your stay is enjoyable. Freshly baked cinnamon rolls in the morning, fresh cookies and candy at all times in the office, expensive coffees, free bottled water in the rooms, lavender on the beds, expensive mattresses that were the finest we have ever experienced in a motel/hotel. Meticulously clean rooms, original artwork, all go into making the stay a terrific one. We'll be back!!

  • Liked — Meticulously clean and the friendliest hosts ever!
  • Disliked — road noise

I have stayed at other Pendleton hotels (Red Lion, Oxford Suites) and thought they were good values. For this stay I wanted something a little more personalized and got it at the Rugged Country Lodge ("that thinks it is a bed and breakfast" according to the sign out front). Helpful staff, warm cookies at check in, nice personalized rooms with fairly plush beds and quality towels. Full range of breakfast items (thoughtfully selected, such as fat free and regular yogurt) available in the community room each morning is included in the price.

  • Liked — special touch
  • Disliked — road noise

This is a small motel in a quiet neighborhood near I-84 in Pendleton. Rooms are simple but adequately sized, with microwave and fridge. Windows open, which is always a plus for me. The entire hotel is non-smoking. The clerk was extremely friendly and they offer cookies, iced tea, and coffee in the lobby. Room price includes breakfast. Wireless internet is free. The hotel is quiet (it was virtually empty when we stayed there), but there is a bit of noise from a nearby train track. It is off the highway, and some rooms face away from the road.. Room was spotless and extra pillows are provided. Room was about $70 plus tax.

  • Liked — quiet location, free internet, clean, reasonable price

Given the other reviews, we were not at all hesitant to book ourselves into this hotel. Some things, however, don't seem to have been mentioned by other writers. There is very little room and if you want to sit down your only option is the bed. There is nowhere to put your stuff: in the bathroom it goes on the back of the toilet or on the edge of the sink. This does not work very well for me. In the room itself, you could only put stuff on the floor or on the very crowded desk. The fridge was just outside the bathroom door, on the floor, and 2 foot by 2 foot. The smallest microwave you have ever seen sat on top of it.

The room was clean and the furnishings seemed new, there was nowhere to put the sprig of lavender after you removed it from the bed. We had a corner room, which may have been part of the problem because there did not seem to be any insulation in the outside walls. Every car that went down the street during the night sounded like it was driving by the end of the bed. Also, nobody mentions the trains close by. Five of them went by between 5AM and 7AM.

The people were friendly, the breakfast was good, but I don't manage well without sleep.

  • Liked — the breakfast
  • Disliked — the lack of room and the noise
  • Tips/Secrets — make sure you only want to sleep in the room
