“Fantastic location, helpful staff and comfortable rooms.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 October 2009

This was one of the hotels my wife and I stayed in during our honeymoon. We stayed here for 5 nights and used it as a base while we traveled around to places like the Columbia River Gorge and the Oregon coastline.

We spent the first couple of days just exploring the Portland area, and the Hotel Monaco has a great central location. It's within walking distance to fantastic restaurants, Voodoo Doughnuts, shopping and movies.

The front desk staff was very helpful, offering a very thorough city map upon check-in as well as some recommendations for local attractions.

The hotel itself is very unique, with lots of stylistic decor that would set itself apart from a more mega chain-type hotel.

Our room was excellent. We had a nice large king bed with a very comfortable mattress, a flat screen TV, and a nice view looking towards Mt. Hood on the top floor. The room also had a nice sitting area separated from the main bedroom with french doors, with a couch, another TV, a fridge, and of course a wide array of honor bar selections.

The hotel was very quiet, we never heard any noise from beside or below us, which was great for resting after a long day exploring Oregon.

Parking is a bit pricey but that's to be expected in downtown.

We ordered room service one night from the Red Star Tavern which is right next to the hotel, and it was very good. I would encourage people to get out and eat outside of the hotel since there are an array of fantastic restaurants all within walking distance. However since we were there for 5 nights, we didn't feel like walking around every single night.

All in all, the Hotel Monaco in Portland was excellent, and I give it a 5/5!

We spent one night at the Monaco. Staff was very friendly and accomodating from the valet to the front desk to the bellman. Our room was classic but not particulary large. The location is good and you can walk to the downtown, river and even Pearl District. We very much enjoyed the complimentary wine tasting at 5pm for guests. In addition to the wine, there is a bit of theater with a makeup artist, balloon man, painter and a very strange Tartot card reader. We hope her readings of the cards are right.! This is more of the traditional old style feel of a hotel with a very nice lobby. We enjoyed our stay.

We selected this hotel based on positive reviews and its dog friendly reputation. Everything I read about the hotel prior to my visit indicated that this was a hotel that emphasized first class service. From the first moment we drove into the garage, they missed the mark in the service category. Sometimes you just have an instant feeling or "vibe" about a place that tells you it is not going to meet your expectations, and this is surely the experience we had. The overly aggressive valets trying too hard to be friendly to the point of being very annoying were the first sign. That and the sign that informed you the fee for parking is an outrageous $31 per day! Then upon check in our room was not ready and we could not be given a time frame of when it would be available. Traveling with a dog and luggage in tow, we were told to "take a walk around the block" until our room was ready. It took three attempts to get a straight answer from the front desk about our room. Our room was quite large which was the best thing I can say about our experience. We had a king suite which we like because it gives us two rooms to provide separation between sleep and living. Unfortunately, the doors that pull out and divide the two spaces were broken so we were unable to divide the space. Very annoying when one of us is an early riser and the other likes to sleep in! The VIP pet service was a joke too. We had to ask for pet dishes and bed, and after not getting these delivered to our room for over six hours, had to request them a second time. Finally delivered at 11 PM! We made a special point to leave the room for the entire morning the following day, with our dog in tow, so that the room could be cleaned. We made a request for housekeeping but when we returned at 2 PM our room had not been touched. Upon check out, we were charged to park TWO cars per day at the aforementioned $31 per day. The charge was removed but should have never been there in the first place. Portland has too many other luxury hotel options to consider this place again. I will not be back!

Dear Lennidog:

Thank you so much for your comments about your recent visit to the Hotel Monaco Portland. We certainly appreciate your candid feedback, and will take the steps necessary to correct those items you mentioned. It is our policy to have VIP amenities for our four legged friends; these complimentary items include a dog bowl, place mat, treats, dog toy, and dog mattress, and should be in the room when you check in. We sincerely apologize that this standard was not met for your stay.

Additionally, we are sorry to hear that the sliding glass French doors proved inoperable in your suite. As you mentioned, when these doors are functioning properly our guests enjoy an elevated level of privacy as well as the comfort of separate entertainment and - if needed - sleeping areas.

We try to keep our charges for valet parking competitive with other downtown hotels, and believe the uniquely secured, monitored garage with unlimited in and out privileges provides an excellent value for our guests. We do apologize for the errors in posting your parking charges.

Thank you again for your valuable feedback; we hope that you will give us another opportunity to serve you.

This hotel is not only in a very convienent location but also incredibly nice people work here. The rooms are small but very comfortable and my only small complaint is that the windows don't open. It was really nice to have the Red Star Tavern down in the lobby so we could grab a night cap and snack before heading back up to our room.

Almost hesitant to be too glowing. Don't want the "secret", if there is one, about how cool this little boutique hotel is. Beautiful lobby, very nice and spacious rooms, and terrific front-desk and valet staff. Klimpton remodeled the hotel a few years ago when they took it over and they did a beautiful job. It's right in the heart of Portland's downtown, so very convenently located. All things considered, this is possibly the nicest hotel I've stayed in. Certaintly the best value.

I spent a few nights in the hotel on business. Typically I stay in the Hilton chain but this was a very good choice. The hotel is warm and comfortable. The rooms are small but nicely appointed. Clean throughout. The restaurant that is a part of the hotel is a fun place with good food for dinner and breakfast. The staff to a person was pleasant. The hotel is handy to the downtown and easy to get to via the rail from the airport. The only concern i have is the unbelievable number of homeless or panhandlers on the streets of Portland. You litteraly have to walk over and around them to get anywhere. We went to Mama Mia's 3 blocks down at about 7pm and were endlessly asked for money coming and going.

This hotel is one of Portland's classier ones. Wine tasting and the Red Star Restaurant are enough to keep you in the hotel. The staff is nice and accommodating in a timely manner. I stayed here before and had an issue which was resolved quickly. They have readily available transportation. I used the black and white taxis to get around town(my fave taxi company in Portland). I splurged and took one of the hotels Lincoln towncars to the airport and it cost me $50(a taxi is $35) but it was more roomy than the taxi which was a Scion xb and after my last stay in Portland I was tired. Even though I had a great nights sleep at the Monaco. To much wine maybe?
