Located close to the Burnside Saturday Market, Voodoo Donuts, and, of course, the Oregon Duck Store, this hotel resonates with the class of its former grand lodge, the Multnomah Hotel. Expanse of a lobby graced by columns and a premier steak house off its lobby that provides room service as well as excellent dining.

We took a two bedroom and one bedroom suites for my family for three nights and enjoyed every bit of the stay from the minute we pulled up and were welcomed by the curbside valets and parking attendants, to efficient check-in (could be a little more welcoming) and valet help to our rooms. We were traveling with a 3 month old, a three, four, seven and thirteen year old and six adults. And we were welcomed wherever we went in the hotel.

Although in an odd place (it appeared to be on an old parking floor in the basement), the breakfast buffet was more than enough and everyone was satisfied. There is a large swimming pool on one of the sub-floors as well. The manager's reception every evening is a welcome watering hole and it includes snacks.

The downtown is on Fareless Square, an award winning transit system that covers the metro area. You can hop on and hop off as you explore downtown shopping brand name and boutique stores, people watching in Pioneer Square and eating in a plethora of great restaurants. Portland is renown for its dining.

The only downside was an impatient Asian housekeeper who barged in without knocking. And it's getting a little dated already in spite of it's recent opening. Maybe they just chose cheap carpeting or they've run a lot of people through the place!

Location is not in the best area but it's a transitional neighborhood within walking distance to most places, also very close to Stumptown Coffee. Lots of panhandlers and for some reason they only asked for nickels or quarters. Our room was stuffy and had an odd smell, like baby powder which after a while was nauseating. We couldn't open the windows, they were sealed shut, and we had trouble getting the room to cool off but a staff member came and fixed it. The staff was very nice and helpful by the way. A few other complaints- the bathroom shower/tub was NOT clean, there were hairs in it that we had to wipe up (gross). Also, when you turn on the tv it doesn't instantly go to free regular tv, you have to go through the menu selections like pay per view and porno before you can just watch regular free tv. Why do they have to accomodate perverts? The free breakfast was nice, omelets were great and manager reception was fun. Since it wasn't exactly a bargain, would not stay here again, will try another place closer to shopping.

Room Tip: Stumptown coffee nearby

Stayed one night with family- specifically booked this hotel for the larger rooms and the ability to fit multiple family members in one room.

One note on pricing- I booked directly through the hotel website about 3 weeks in advance (AAA rate). Closer to the date, I was able to find multiple cheaper rates on hotel search websites (normal rates, no specific restrictions). The hotel would not match these rates, instead requiring that I cancel the reservation with them and rebook on the alternative websites. Check prices before you go....

Rooms are as better than expected for an Embassy Suites. Large flat screen in sitting room and bedroom- a treat! Spacious rooms in general, of course with fridge, microwave, etc. Easily and privately slept three guests. View was directly facing a parking garage, so not much (we were on an upper floor). Bathroom was SMALL for the hotel room size and did not have a fan. This made the tile floor very slippery from condensed steam when exiting the shower.

Breakfast and managers reception were as expected- full cocktails and full, hot breakfast with plenty of places to sit and eat. No rush for a table even on a busy Saturday morning. Nicely outfitted work out room with ample towels. Does get busy in the AM hours.

As the hotel is very centrally located in Portland, it is within walking distance to many eateries, bars, and other attractions. Parking via the hotel is steep, with valet running 25/night. You could self park in their garage, but this did not offer in and out options. Luckily, there are about 10 other parking garages within two blocks. We were able to self park using a weekend rate (parking around 9 pm and leaving at 10 am) for 9.50. Much better parking deals if you look around. Also take note that internet is costly, but there are many free sites within downtown if you are willing to walk a block or so.

One compliment I must give is to the valet workers out front. We were waiting out front for a family member and our car suddenly died and would not start, directly in front of the hotel. The valet had a portable jump start kit right at their stand and were able to get our car running in 3 minutes, despite the fact that we weren't even parking with them. We didn't even have to ask- it was very much appreciated!

I recommend this hotel if you are heading to downtown Portland and are looking for a nice, large room, free breakfast and good location. Take note of different rates online and continue to check them after you book. Consider alternative, non-hotel owned parking. Its not the cheapest option, but it is worth the money, in my opinion.

In the heart of Portland you find many a hotel, but the Embassy is one of a kind. High class with a hint of charm, the money is well worth it.

Room Tip: There is a pub next door. Ask for a room on the other side.
