“By far the best Embassy Suites I have stayed at”
Reviewed 18 February 2009

I travel for business on a weekly basis - hitting Portland about once a month. Along the way I have stayed at multiple Embassy Suites (Nashville, Dallas etc.) - the one at 319 SW Pine St has definitely provided the most pleasurable experience. It doesn't have the (which seems to be the norm for Embassy Suites) "open" floor plan...so, you aren't kept awake all night by annoying guests who find it entertaining to yell from the "lounge" area. The food is great, the decor classic, and staff are friendly (I had no issues with rude valet staff). Parking is a bit of an issue; though, isn't that to be expected if you stay at a hotel downtown ANYWHERE? I wasn't surprised at all.

Breakfast is always fresh and well-stocked (unlike some of the other Embassy Suites), the , manager's reception welcomed (free booze and appetizers are great!), and the food selection much more appetizing then most hotels.

Every time I stay in Portland I opt to stay at the downtown Embassy Suites - though, if looking for a bit cheaper, the Marriott Downtown isn't a bad choice either.

The hotel is just great. The flat screen HD TV's in each room make watching TV away from home very nice. The house cleaning is outstanding. If you need anything just call the front desk and they will take care of it. Everyone at the hotel was outstanding. The bed is very nice with lots of pillows. If I were ever to travel back to Portland I would stay at the Embassy Suites Downtown location.

The Portland Downtown are is very dirty. There are a lot of homeless people all asking you for money. There is a large police forces on foot as well as a number of police cars that patrol the area. The Hotel has security and at no time did I feel unsafe in the Hotel. I truly hope to never to this Toilet again but if I do I will always stay at the Embassy Suite Hotel.

  • Liked — Staff / service (e.g., room service, special assistance)
  • Disliked — The Portland Downtown area is full of homeless people asking for money.

The Embassy Suites – Portland Downtown is a grand hotel with a lot to offer. The rooms are spacious with a large (40-42 inch?) flat screen TV in the “living room” area and an identical TV in the separate bedroom. The price was right at $116 per night, before tax.

My view wasn’t great (looked out at an opposing wing of the hotel), but I wasn’t complaining. I was there on business, so I didn’t spend a lot of time in the room.

Check-in was a little slow (one check-in desk employee serving a line of 4-5 guests), although a second employee showed up after we had been waiting 5-10 minutes.

The meeting room facilities were fine. I didn’t have a chance to test the room service menu or visit the swimming pool or fitness area. The restaurant / lounge in the lobby (Kincaid’s) was great with an excellent menu (we had a lunch and a dinner there).

But the best part of the stay (and I know this will sound odd) was the complimentary breakfast. I now know what people mean when they refer to what I think as a fine/typical “free” breakfast as merely “average” or “nothing special”. The breakfast at the Embassy Suites – Portland Downtown is amazing. The room is set up like a Greek garden, complete with multiple levels and a fountain in the middle. The selection includes bacon, sausage, scrambled eggs, pancakes … I’m sure there was more. The cook will make you a made-to-order omelette. There are also muffins, bagels and cinnamon buns, as well as fruit, cereal and a selection of juices and coffee.

I could never have imagined staying anywhere for the free breakfast, but the setting and selection were amazing. I highly recommend the Embassy Suites - Portland Downtown!

After reading a few of the reviews on tripadvisor, I was worried about the hotel. However, all those worries went away after I walked into to my suite.

The one bedroom suite was spacious, clean and bright with windows that went from the living room to the bedroom. The bedroom was immaculate, and had a large flat screen TV. Actually, both the bedroom and living room had the same TV.

The hotel also has a nice indoor pool and gym.

The room rate included a delicious full breakfast, with cook to order omelet bar. It was the perfect start to each morning.

The hotel is about four blocks to the Tri Max, which you can ride free all over downtown Portland, and they have a free shuttle to/from the train station. We were out past 10 p.m. and were not worried about anything. The area appeared to be safe, even at that time of night.

The only complaint I had was the little refrigerator had a horrible smell, so we never used it.

  • Liked — The full breakfast with cook to order omelet bar.
  • Disliked — The smelly refrigerator.

First of all, I am a resident of Portland. I frequently look to get away (while not getting out of town) by staying at a downtown hotel and becoming a tourist of my own city. I recently booked a weekend at Embassy Suites for my wife, myself and three growing boys. I've personally stayed at the Marriott, Heathman Hotel, and the Mark Spencer. I've been in and out of all the big players in the Rose City at one time or another. None can say they are superior. Even stalwarts like the Benson, Governor and Fifth Avenue Suites will have a tough time besting this place. The Embassy Suites is highly ranked in TripAdvisor, which is saying a lot.

Rooms: A spacious suite with marble flooring/countertops. Nicely furnished. Very clean. Nice! We experienced no problems with noise and felt like the walls were well-insulated. Since the transit mall is north by a couple of blocks, bus noise is not an issue. Portland does a great job with public transportation by maintaining narrow, well-defined transit corridors. So if your hotel is along the transit mall, like the Hilton is, you may get lots of bus noise. No problem here. Also, the traffic lights within downtown are strictly timed to maintain a steady 13 mph speed through the city, so noise from cars is generally not intrusive. Our room had no view except for the adjacent wing of the hotel. Others may have decent views on the street-side, but with only eight floors don't expect a panorama.

Decor: A grand lobby fit for such a historic building.

Service: Friendly, accomodating. The Concierge was top-notch. Front desk attentive and cheerful. Complimentary shuttle within the city will take you wherever you need to, within a reasonable distance. I recommend the Japanese Garden as a must see. One gripe: no shuttle to and from the airport. However, the MAX light rail will wisk you directly from the airport to the Skidmore Fountain stop, which is two easy blocks from the property.

Location: Two blocks from the Saturday Market and the MAX light rail; three blocks from Waterfront Park; 7-8 blocks to Pioneer Square; six blocks to the Classical Chinese Garden; six blocks to the trendy Pearl District; many great restaurants nearby, but with access to the MAX and the Streetcar in the fareless square, you can find the best of the best quite easily and for nothing.; right in the midst of some of Portland's best (and sometimes rowdy) nightclubs. Check out Darcelle or Embers if you like the alternative scene.

Amenities: All the usual perks of a fine hotel. Great indoor pool kept nice and warm. Our kids spent 2 1/2 hours per day in it. Portland Steak and Chophouse known for good food. Another gripe: parking is expensive, so we took the MAX in from the suburbs and lived like tourists. Outstanding FREE buffet breakfast with all the trimmings, plus an omelete station. Not good for the waistline with all that great bacon, sausage and biscuits with gravy. Manger's Reception with complimentary wine and a few well drinks. These perks really give you a good bang for your buck.

My family will stay at this facility again. Since I live here, I am familiar with all the choices. At this price point, the Embassy Suites is up there with the best in the city and can even be considered a best value for the suite-sized rooms and added amenities.

  • Liked — Beatiful lobby and tastefully done rooms.
  • Disliked — Parking fee. No shuttle to airport.

We booked three rooms for four nights, and had a wonderful stay.

The bell staff is excellent. They arranged for shuttle service several times with no problems, even when we needed a late-night pickup - which is technically not supposed to be possible.

The maid service is whatever time of day we wanted it (we requested 3pm through their put-the-time-on-the-doorknob method), and they always left the rooms spotless.

It was a pleasure to use their fitness room, with their top quality workout machines... the best I've ever seen in a hotel, actually.

The double rooms have a substantially larger living room than the king rooms, at least from our experience. We had friends who requested a corner room which was a little more money but a bit larger and very nice.

There was no outside noise (at least from the 6th floor), and no noise from other rooms.

The bed was comfortable, and the curtains make the room plenty dark when it's daylight outside.

The free hot breakfast was good, with omelets made to order. (They did run out of fresh fruit one day, though.) The reception hour was ok.

When you're there, make sure you check out Huber's nearby for appetizers and Spanish Coffee. Kel's Irish Pub/Restaurant is another fun choice.

  • Liked — great service
  • Disliked — Having to sign a letter at checkin promising no parties and no more than six in a room. Tacky.

This hotel is very different from the normal Embassy Suites. It's an updated old hotel with real character. The rooms are huge and nicely appointed. The reception, bell and valet staff are very courteous and helpful. The free breakfast is the normal Embassy Suites fare--no complaints. The meeting I held was marred by very poor A/V equipment and support. I would not hold a meeting here again. BUT, if you are on business or playing the tourist and are looking for a nice room with some "local character," I would unhesitatingly recommend this hotel.
