My husband and I stayed at Hotel deLuxe for two nights on a get-a-way to Portland this November. The hotel was charming; its totally vintage, but restored with a careful level of attention to detail that allows the original charm of the building to shine through while still offering modern day amenities and all the comforts of a great little boutique hotel.

Picture subway tile bathrooms, vintage cast iron tubs, brand new fixtures, sinks etc and really comfortable beds with crisp white linens. The whole thing has been tastefully updated retaining plenty of its lovely vintage 1920-30's charm in the lobby and rooms, 1950's touches in the bar, and the essence of what one might expect in a grand 1930-something dining room at Gracie's, the inhouse restaurant. the whole place oozes oldschool luxury, but in a unpretentious, comfortable kind of low-key way. Built in 1912 (I think), the building has the extra large original windows (fully draped) and large closets. The standard rooms are quite small so upgrade if you are in the market for extra space.

This hotel is all about service and it really shows. From the moment we were greeted by the bellman to the moment we checked out we had only impeccable, friendly and courteous encounters with everyone we met. My favourite details include the well stocked 'honour bar' with a selection of unique local flavours and treats, the pillow menu, the ice cream delivery menu (local of course), the pet friendly amenities, and the 'make it so' button on the phone which, as you might imagine, attends to your every desire.

The location is also priceless as you can walk to downtown, the Pearl and NW Broadway which are all within 12 blocks without all the noise and fuss of the hotels which are right downtown. Its the best location in Downtown Portland.

Gracie's breakfast is delicious as well. Tip; if you drive find some off the street parking in a lot right around the corner for 12$ overnight and skip the valet which is $27.

We will be back for sure!

Room Tip: pick a larger room if you want "average size" hotel rooms as the small rooms are quite tin...

Last week I hosted a business meeting and presentation in the Green Room at Hotel deLuxe.

Thanks in large part to the Hotel deLuxe staff, it was a huge success.

The front desk staff were very helpful and kind. And the staff assigned to manage the food and drink during the event were extremely pleasant and professional.

The entire event was handled so professionally by the Hotel deLuxe catering management, Claudia and Natalie. I have never attended or hosted had an event that went so smoothly.

And of course, the Hotel itself just oozes class. Not only is it a beautifully designed space, it is also so very clean and comfortable.

I will go out of my way to recommend the Hotel deLuxe for both business and pleasure.

My husband and I had tickets for a concert in Portland and decided to stay at the Hotel Deluxe after reading positive reviews. What a great experience! The front desk staff was so friendly and our room was perfect, with a spacious bathroom and nice amenities. I always have trouble sleeping in city hotels because of the noise, but not a problem here. The room was nice and quiet and the beds are amazingly comfortable. The icing on the cake is that I left an article in our room by mistake and the Hotel Manager arranged to have it sent to me right away, free of charge. I will recommend the Hotel Deluxe to everyone. I love Portland, the people are so friendly, and this hotel is a great example!

Room Tip: We were only on the second floor and I was worried it would be noisy, but not at all. Slept great!

Thank you for your review and choosing to stay with us. I am glad you found the staff to be so warm and the room so comfortable. It sounds like you had a great weekend getaway, and hopefully the concert was great too. Next time you are in town we hope to see you again.

And found that the hotel lacked. It is an old building built by the Freemasons and their lodge occupies the conjoined building on the block. So if you aren't into supporting Freemasons stay somewhere else.
Even though the staff did a good job, there was just something off about the premises from slightly stained old carpets in some areas to old uncomfortable bathrooms, the hotel lacked that certain Je no se qua. We did have a good time but due to the hotels location we found ourselves a little bit removed from the downtown scene.
I wouldn't stay there again. There are better more affordable options right downtown.

Hotel deLuxe is conveniently located at the heart of downtown Portland, just a short drive away to great restaurants, such as Mother's Bistro and Bar and near the Saturday Market (now open on Sundays as well).

Parking is easy to find in this area. We arrived in the evening and as long as you move your car before 8 AM the next day, street parking was always free. On Sundays you have until 1 PM to move your car after which street parking is not free from 1-7 PM.

Upon entrance into the hotel, you are greeted by friendly staff who open the door for you. Up the very short flight of stairs, you are greeted with a nice lobby area where people are comfortably lounging. The front desk staff are very friendly and happy to answer any questions you might have.

The elevators require that you use your hotel key to access the various levels within the hotel which is great as it prevents unwanted non-hotel guests from loitering in the hotel.

The rooms we stayed in were comparable to rooms you would find in Europe - well decorated, small in size, but charming, clean, reasonably priced and comfortable with basic amenities such as a hair dryer, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, facial and body soaps, etc. The bar area was well supplied with tasty coffee and snacks as well.

I highly recommend staying at Hotel deLuxe and would not hesitate to stay there again!

Stayed here for a few days in late October. Location was key and it was perfect for exploring downtown Portland by foot, MAX or rental car. First impression set by the doorman: laid back but professional, helpful and cool. Next up, the reception desk: Same, but anted up by upgrading our room without asking. Very nice, large room with 10' high windows on 2 sides for lots of natural light. Only problem was they overlooked an ugly rooftop and that corner of the building was directly over where the trash and recycling are picked up and dumped - causing a huge racket every morning at about 6:30 am. Any room on the west facing side of the building will get the rooftop view and any room on the south facing or southwest corner will get the dump truck reverie + the rooftop view. South and east facing rooms may be a better bet. Regardless, the room was elegant and refined, the bed was perfect and the shower was delightfully like rain. Being an old hotel, the bathroom was basic, but upgraded nicely and amenities were lush and plush. As for the in-room extras: mini-bar in frig was well stocked; mini bar on cart was over the top (even a "sex toys" kit!); Aveda products in bath; walk-in closet, hairdryer, iron, etc.

The hotel restaurant, Gracie's was quite good and the ambiance is glamorous without being pretentious (jeans and fleece welcome). Although they don't say so, the dinner menu is basically set up like tapas. Must say, their forte seemed to be making and matching perfect sauces to the dish. The most amazing Asian string beans I have ever encountered. I want that recipe. Great with the spicy cherry-glazed duck. The lamb shanks were awesome. Breakfasts were very good, but a bit spendy. Also, the Driftwood Bar had a good low-key vibe, attracting guests and locals. Not much going on, but a great throw-back to the good ol' '60's. Made a good stiff Margarita the way we do in NM (no sugar syrup and a large shot of good tequila). Friendly barkeeps, too.

Bottom line: I'd definitely stay here again - when and if I have $120+/night to spend.
