“Good location, good value, nice view”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 August 2013

This IS a Clarion, so you are going to get much what you would expect from a hotel in this chain - clean rooms, good service, basic hotel amenities such as a pool, jacuzzi & workout room - a basic large-chain hotel along the lines of a Radisson (in that category). What is different about this Clarion is it sits directly on May's Lake, a natural little lake which feeds into the Columbia River (it is from an underground spring) - and so every room has a view of this lake, and in our case, being on the 4th floor, a VERY nice view of it. And though it's near the airport, being Portland, you are also surrounded by a lot of green and trees, so it doesn't seem so much like the light-industrial area it is (being near the airport). It feels more upscale.

Also, the room we were in, 422, was large for the price. Not only a king-sized Temperpedic bed, but a small sitting room area with sofa, coffee table, large desk, and small kitchenette area complete with Fridge, Microwave, & coffee pot. The bathroom was pretty standard for a hotel chain such as this, as was the closet, though it was nice to have that little entrance-way where we could also put an extra suitcase (just had to request an extra suitcase stand for it, but they delivered it promptly). And the bathroom fixtures were all obviously recently updated and very nice with wood and granite, and extra shelving below to put your things (something many hotels do not have). The towels and such were also pretty standard for a hotel, so if you want soft luxury for that bring your own (the main reason I didn't give it a 5 star). However, it was all extremely CLEAN, which I liked. And as with the bathroom, the furniture and decorations look as though they've been recently renovated in a rather classy but modern style, making it nicer than other hotels in the same price range. The hallways still are a bit dated, perhaps they are still in the process of updating those, but the rooms themselves were extremely nice, as was the main lobby area where you get your breakfast.

The staff was very pleasant and very helpful - even giving directions to the cab driver from downtown Portland for us one night (guess the cabby was new, since our friends had no problems finding the hotel at all, it is very easily located). When we first checked in, there was a nicer room than the one we'd reserved available (with a better view of the lake and better bed, the Temperpedic), so they upgraded us automatically at no extra charge. They gave us advice about the best places around town to eat and drink, and activities to do, always answering our questions with a smile, even when they were busy.

Oh yes, location - though it is close to the airport, with the windows closed we couldn't hear the planes at all, and in fact never heard our neighbors around us, though we knew there were people next door to us. The only thing I ever heard was the fan in their bathroom when I was in ours, and that was very faint. So as far as quiet is concerned, this hotel is definitely the place to stay. Also, with the blackout shades provided, it is nice and dark, so no issues with sleeping. Especially with that incredibly comfortable temperpedic mattress on the king-sized bed!

Also, they have a free shuttle service to and from the airport, and they will also drop you at the airport train depot instead if you want, so you don't necessarily have to rent a car to get around Portland (the trains there are a great way to get around, and you don't have to deal with parking). It is only 10 minutes from the airport, about 20 minutes from downtown Portland, and 15 minutes from downtown Vancouver, Wa. across the bridge (depending on traffic), so it is very conveniently located for getting around.

The pool and jacuzzi, though older, are kept clean, and again are looking out onto May's Lake, so you can sit by the pool and look out onto the water of the lake as well. They have both a covered area to sit inside, as well as an outside lounge area, so you can choose depending on the weather.

The breakfast is a pretty standard business-person style continental - eggs, bacon, a waffle maker, muffins, fruit, yogurt, that type of thing. It may not be fancy, but it was good and a nice touch to have it included. Saved us having to go out to eat in the mornings. The coffee was very good, even the kind they had in the room, which surprised me as I usually don't like it.

And finally, if you are renting a car, the parking here is FREE, as is the WiFi (not all hotels in this area include these items free). A big bonus for us as we planned on renting a car for at least a couple of days, and absolutely had to have WiFi for our business. The room also included free HBO, Shotime and other cable stations as well as movies, though we were so busy we weren't able to take advantage of that feature. It had a flat-screen HDTV as well, which was nice.

Overall, if what you want is a nice hotel with a nice view at a nice price that is in an easy-access location to pretty much everything, you should take a look at the Clarion Portland Airport.

Room Tip: We had room 422, which had a very nice view of May's Lake, a very large and comfortable Temperpe...

This hotel is a pretty decent place. Medium to large rooms. A bit old. The age shows most in the bathrooms. TV has free On Demand movies. Breakfast is pretty good - eggs, sausage/bacon, bread, waffles, juices, coffee. The hotel is close to an outdoor mall and other stores if you need to pick a few things up for your Oregon hiking. It's about 15 minutes to Downtown Portland which is not a bad drive. Of course, it's right next to the airport, so no stress when it comes to catching a flight.

Overall, recommended.

I really thought the room decor was modern and had great, urban feel. Stainless steel and cherry. (my sink had a crack, too, maybe the same room as whynot) You can tell the housekeeping staff spends a lot of effort in preparing the rooms. Towels are neatly sculpted and the linens are quality. Great sleep, even if it was only 4 hours. lol. The room's window was guarded by tree crowns, so it felt private. The breakfast room was all a buzz with folks excited for the day. Hot breakfast with lots of protein and options. The staff was attentive and friendly. I would recommend the hotel, for sure.

I love the Clarion hotel. It was just not available for me this trip in July. The staff is always helpful, the hotel is always clean and the breakfast is wonderful. The only thing it is missing is a restaurant. I have stayed there twice and know friends that stay there every time they go to Portland.

Room Tip: Love the rooms facing the little lake/water behind it. There is a beautiful view out the window at...

Was looking for a reasonably proced airport hotel with breakfast in this area and am glad I settled for this based on reviews. It is great value for money and quite spacious, I did not understand why I once spent lots to stay at Sheraton yet this one is similar. Also serves free breakfast. You could hear aiplan noises if you kept your window open , otherwise it was minimal. I will make this my airport hotel as I frequent the area.

Wema34,
I couldn't agree with you more! Why spend twice as much to stay at the Sheraton? Thank you for breaking away from the over priced hotels here at the airport. We hope to see you on your next visit.

We recently stayed at the Clarion under a Park & Fly deal. We have stayed here several times over a number of years. Early on, this was a very up to date hotel in excellent condition. It is showing its age now, however, as our room was a bit tired. Our sink had a crack, the bottom of the bathroom door was showing a lot of wear, and the room was not as nice as we remembered it.

The bed was comfortable and the room was quite, despite being very close to PDX. There is a Shari's 24-hour restaurant across the street.

The hotel is close to PDX and offers excellent shuttle service. The shuttle can be scheduled and starts at 4:00am. When arriving at the airport, the shuttle will come for pickup rather than waiting for a predetermined schedule.

Speaking of the shuttle, we came in to PDX on our return trip late in the evening (around 10:00pm). Our shuttle driver ("Jay" I believe) was probably the most informative and helpful shuttle driver we have ever experienced in of our travels. He offered excellent advice and information which was appreciated by all. He clearly cares about his job and wishes to provide exceptional customer service.

The park and fly option was a good value and our experience overall was good.

We stayed 2 nights at the Clarion while visiting the Columbia River Gorge area. The hotel was clean and our room very comfortable. Everything was as expected according to reviews we had read. I would recommend this hotel when staying in Portland. On a side note, don't pay extra for a lake view room. Luckily we got a great deal on Expedia. The "lake" looked to be nothing more than a large retention pond.
