This IS a Clarion, so you are going to get much what you would expect from a hotel in this chain - clean rooms, good service, basic hotel amenities such as a pool, jacuzzi & workout room - a basic large-chain hotel along the lines of a Radisson (in that category). What is different about this Clarion is it sits directly on May's Lake, a natural little lake which feeds into the Columbia River (it is from an underground spring) - and so every room has a view of this lake, and in our case, being on the 4th floor, a VERY nice view of it. And though it's near the airport, being Portland, you are also surrounded by a lot of green and trees, so it doesn't seem so much like the light-industrial area it is (being near the airport). It feels more upscale.
Also, the room we were in, 422, was large for the price. Not only a king-sized Temperpedic bed, but a small sitting room area with sofa, coffee table, large desk, and small kitchenette area complete with Fridge, Microwave, & coffee pot. The bathroom was pretty standard for a hotel chain such as this, as was the closet, though it was nice to have that little entrance-way where we could also put an extra suitcase (just had to request an extra suitcase stand for it, but they delivered it promptly). And the bathroom fixtures were all obviously recently updated and very nice with wood and granite, and extra shelving below to put your things (something many hotels do not have). The towels and such were also pretty standard for a hotel, so if you want soft luxury for that bring your own (the main reason I didn't give it a 5 star). However, it was all extremely CLEAN, which I liked. And as with the bathroom, the furniture and decorations look as though they've been recently renovated in a rather classy but modern style, making it nicer than other hotels in the same price range. The hallways still are a bit dated, perhaps they are still in the process of updating those, but the rooms themselves were extremely nice, as was the main lobby area where you get your breakfast.
The staff was very pleasant and very helpful - even giving directions to the cab driver from downtown Portland for us one night (guess the cabby was new, since our friends had no problems finding the hotel at all, it is very easily located). When we first checked in, there was a nicer room than the one we'd reserved available (with a better view of the lake and better bed, the Temperpedic), so they upgraded us automatically at no extra charge. They gave us advice about the best places around town to eat and drink, and activities to do, always answering our questions with a smile, even when they were busy.
Oh yes, location - though it is close to the airport, with the windows closed we couldn't hear the planes at all, and in fact never heard our neighbors around us, though we knew there were people next door to us. The only thing I ever heard was the fan in their bathroom when I was in ours, and that was very faint. So as far as quiet is concerned, this hotel is definitely the place to stay. Also, with the blackout shades provided, it is nice and dark, so no issues with sleeping. Especially with that incredibly comfortable temperpedic mattress on the king-sized bed!
Also, they have a free shuttle service to and from the airport, and they will also drop you at the airport train depot instead if you want, so you don't necessarily have to rent a car to get around Portland (the trains there are a great way to get around, and you don't have to deal with parking). It is only 10 minutes from the airport, about 20 minutes from downtown Portland, and 15 minutes from downtown Vancouver, Wa. across the bridge (depending on traffic), so it is very conveniently located for getting around.
The pool and jacuzzi, though older, are kept clean, and again are looking out onto May's Lake, so you can sit by the pool and look out onto the water of the lake as well. They have both a covered area to sit inside, as well as an outside lounge area, so you can choose depending on the weather.
The breakfast is a pretty standard business-person style continental - eggs, bacon, a waffle maker, muffins, fruit, yogurt, that type of thing. It may not be fancy, but it was good and a nice touch to have it included. Saved us having to go out to eat in the mornings. The coffee was very good, even the kind they had in the room, which surprised me as I usually don't like it.
And finally, if you are renting a car, the parking here is FREE, as is the WiFi (not all hotels in this area include these items free). A big bonus for us as we planned on renting a car for at least a couple of days, and absolutely had to have WiFi for our business. The room also included free HBO, Shotime and other cable stations as well as movies, though we were so busy we weren't able to take advantage of that feature. It had a flat-screen HDTV as well, which was nice.
Overall, if what you want is a nice hotel with a nice view at a nice price that is in an easy-access location to pretty much everything, you should take a look at the Clarion Portland Airport.
