There are a couple of things that prevent me from giving them that 5th star. On our first morning our host Steve was at the table having breakfast when we came down at the appointed time of 8:30am. Everyone sits at the same table. And though it was truly not wide enough for two people to sit at the end of the table, one couple had to do so. And a late-arriving couple had to sit apart because there were not two settings together - although, Steve was eating at a setting next to one of the vacant spots. he did not offer to give up his place such that the couple could sit together. Maybe it's just me, but I found it rude that the host took up a space and thus required his guests to sit apart and/or crowd in on the end (my wife and I were on the end the following morning so I can attest first-hand it is crowded). Steve dominated the conversation throughout breakfast and seemed intent on ensuring we knew he graduated from Yale before embarking on a very successful career. When the conversation seemed to drift away from his accomplishments, he always brought the focus back to himself. Again - maybe just me, but it all seemed inappropriate and we felt uncomfortable. I will say, however, that while Steve ate breakfast with us the following two mornings as well, to his credit that he was not so dominant in the conversation.

The second caveat is the settee in the Victorian Apartment. It is a dark settee on a dark rug in a dark room... my brother-in-law had sore toes for the entire stay as a result of hitting his foot on the leg of the settee when coming back from the bathroom during the night. And my wife fell face-down to the floor after tripping over it when she entered the room (from the bright outside to the dark room). I strongly urge you to move the settee out of the way when you arrive.

Enough complaining - the old home is beautiful and the Apartment is very comfortable and quiet. The location is great - one block from a fantastic shopping and dining area in one direction and a wonderful place for a leisurely walk among the old homes in the other. Take advantage of the hosts' maps - they are very helpful.

The best part were the breakfasts. Each was unique and wonderful.

Room Tip: Beware the settee in the Victorian Apartment - I suggest moving it away from the foot of the bed, as...

I appreciate the feedback. When possible I do try to join the guests for breakfast. Once I sit down and start to eat, the table setting is used and I feel it would be awkward for me to move and reset the place setting. Also, I do not intend to dominate the conversation. And given the size of the table there are sometimes two or three simultaneous conversations. But sometimes I get carried away. I will try to be more aware of this in the future. On days when there are more than 10 for breakfast seating side by side at the end of the table can be a bit tight.

What a great place to stay. Close to everything. Wonderful room and bed, great breakfast and snacks available during the evening. These folks thought of everything, maps of the area, suggestions of things to do and see. Recommendations of local restaurant's etc. If you looking to stay in Portland you will not go wrong staying here.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Garden Room because of its location in the historic house. Other rooms have turret...

My wife and I recently spent 5 nights at the Lion and the Rose....we actually extended our stay after the first two nights as we were completely happy with all the inn had to offer. The neighborhood is about 1.5 miles from downtown and has lots of good shopping and dining options...including a few gems recommended by Steve. Getting into downtown couldn't be easier with a trolley within walking distance of the inn...we also drove in at times which was extremely easy...no traffic, ample parking, etc.
We stayed in the Garden Room....real nice decor, comfortable bed, and no detail was overlooked. The Bathroom has a claw foot tub/shower which worked out great....if anyone has difficulty climbing it might be best to stay in one of the rooms with a walk in shower.
Breakfasts were great and the owners offer a discount if you can't make it for any reason...although we definitely recommend it.
For those looking for a fitness center there is a huge LA Fitness gym a few blocks away that we used several times...it has classes and every type of equipment (and pool) that you could want.
The staff is friendly, warm, professional, and accommodating. We have stayed in many B&Bs over the last few years....I'm not exaggerating when I say the Lion and the Rose was the best.....the positive reviews are well deserved.

We had a lovely stay in the beautiful Lavonna Suite and greatly enjoyed the hospitality, great breakfast conversations, afternoon snacks and evenings on the porch swing. The Inn is beautifully restored and ran with attention to detail and true hospitality.

We also enjoyed the vibrant little neighborhood in which the Inn is located, with lots of neat little stores and restaurants right around the corner, as well as lots of interesting and historic homes just few blocks away.

It was a great stay.

We are over the top happy with this B&B. First, it is beautifully restored, decorated and maintained. Dusty and Steve have photos of the family who built the house arranged over a mantle. Lots of other old photos to and they will tell you about everything. They have great local maps, too, highlighting restaurants and sites. A tram to downtown is an easy walk away (12 minutes) down pleasant streets. We stayed one night in the "Escapade Room" and found it very comfortable. The tiny bathroom is a bit of a squeeze but perfectly adequate. Only a very large person would have trouble here. Right now we're sitting on the upstairs balcony that runs across the back of the house sipping hot tea while waiting for breakfast to be served at a gorgeous mahogany table set with beautiful tableware. Will be back next week to try out the "Garden Room."

Dusty and Steve have a beautiful B&B. We were so comfortable and felt so at home. It was in an excellent neighborhood and Dusty and Steve had great maps of the area. Breakfast was top quality and served in the beautiful dining room. The outside patio was a great place to relax after a busy day and the front swing a nice spot to enjoy a cup of coffee!

Room Tip: We stayed in the basement apartment.

For our first night in Portland, we stayed at the Lion and Rose. We couldn't have made a better choice. It was amazing...so beautiful, comfortable, and unpretentitious. The bed, as other guests have said, was just so luxurious! The price was very reasonable and the location very convenient. It is located in a quiet neighborhood close to many interesting eateries and shops. Steve, one of the innkeepers, served a delicious breakfast and then joined us at the table. One of the perks of a B&B experience is the interaction with the guests. This morning was no exception. After an hour or so, we were one big happy family! Steve was happy to give us all kinds of helpful information for the rest of our trip. The only downside was that we only stayed for one night. Some day, hopefully, we will return.
