When we arrived at this location my first thoughts were hmmmmm pretty old, hope it's clean. This may be an older property and I think maybe it is the color scheme on the outside that makes it look so outdated, because though it looks a bit tired, the staff were exceptional, as was the food. In it's day I bet it was the luxury Motel in Portland. The location is great, the site very relaxing, right on the river so the dining is wonderful. We would go back there in a heartbeat. Hope Red Lion allows them to update the outside appearance a bit. It deserves it

I was very satisfied with my 3 day stay at Red Lion. I was treated respectfully, housekeeping people over all were very friendly when i would see them in the halls. Wait people in the Restaurant were good, Service was excellent. I had some problems in the room with lights and AC but were quickly solved.

We love staying at Red Lions and this is one of the best. Every employee was friendly and helpful. It was great to wake up to the view of the river and mountain. We watched the hundreds of boats fishing for salmon and steelhead. And the Red Lion beds are always the best. This is a very fine hotel and very reasonably priced.

Hotel needs some TLC. The only reason i give 3 stars is Rooms were spacious and view of river was amazing. Service from restaurant waitress was 5 stars. Everything else was 1 star. Hotel smelled very old, bed was SO uncomfortable, sheets felt like sandpaper, curtains were from 1980s and dirty, and decor just looked old. Hotel seemed deserted...maybe 10 cars in parking lot, but this might be slow season. Outside of building is not attented too...no landscaping, cobwebs all over windows and just old. Very noisy as you can hear traffic from freeway and planes taking off.

Room Tip: All rooms facing courtyard and pool also have view of river. All rooms have a balcony.

On behalf of the entire team of Red Lion Hotel on the River, thank you for relaying your experiences and opinion of our hotel.

We are very sorry that you were not impressed with your time here; and while others have spoken highly of our product and our service it is clear that you felt that it was not to your expectation. We recognize that not every guest can find our hotel to their liking; and while we strive to exceed our guests' expectation there are times when we do miss the mark for some clientele.

That point aside, we read every guest comment we receive; taking each into account to determine what it is that can be done to remedy the situation. Rest assured your overview will be part of our customer service meeting.

Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback and we wish you happy travels.

There were a few problems:
1. Reservation was made for two rooms. The rooms provided were not adjacent. Unacceptable in my mind, when the reservation was made much in advance. What if kids resided alone in one of the rooms?
2. Rooms did not have a bath, and that was not stated to me when checking in. I would have asked for at least one room with a bath for my mother.
3. Room was in bad condition: Bathroom vanity was wobbly, bathroom floor dirty, AC didn't work properly (fix didn't solve the problem).
4. Compensation for all of these issues was $25 total, on a high price per night. Inappropriate in my mind.
All in all, not happy.

Stayed in a suite that is located on the Columbia River. Room was clean and comfortable. Can hear traffic noise from I-5 but the view more than makes up for that. The view of the river and Mount Adams and Mount St. Helens were awesome.

So, you may be asking yourself if that's a good thing or not...well it depends on your mind-set. If you want a comfortable room and don't mind a 'worn' vibe then this is the spot for you. If you demand super clean, slick and modern then look elsewhere. The sheets and pillows are adequate but not new by any stretch. The carpet seems clean but definitely old. The furniture has seen better days and the décor....well, suffice to say it's stuck in the 80's.The restaurant food is good/decent portion size, but don't expect any trendy offerings. There are some additional restaurants close-by if you've got a car, and downtown Portland is only about 15 minutes away. The downstairs convention rooms are o.k. unless you're unlucky to get a small one with no windows. Now, for the best part of the experience. The whole property is on the river, including the restaurant, and the view is fabulous!! I had a river view room which sort of made up for everything. But honestly, I usually stay at the Silver Cloud on Vaugh Street (perfect in every way) and the only reason I stayed at The Red Lion was because of the workshop.

Room Tip: Get a room with a full river view.
