We combined a visit to the Lan Su Chinese Garden with the Portland Japanese Garden, making a perfect day. The Japanese Garden is lovely and tranquil. It is a hike up the hill from the parking area to the garden, but were rewarded with a lovely experience. We were fortunate enough to arrive just as a guided tour of the garden was scheduled to start. The guide was very knowledgeable and his love of things Japanese was easy to see. I highly recommend that you time your visit to the garden to include one of the guided tours. This Japanese garden is larger than the one in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, and is more serene and equally beautiful. A must see if you love things Japanese.

Honestly, we did not expect so much good impression from visiting this garden. I highly recommend to take a guided tour. In this case you will get more understanding and appreciation of what you see. Our guide, lady – volunteer was very knowledgeable and excited about this garden. The whole surrounding is unbelievable. The trees, shrubs, ponds stone garden, views…
If you are visiting Portland, this garden is a must see. I also recommend to visit rose garden which is located in lower part of this location. You can leave your car on Japanese garden and walk down.

We had been to the Chinese Garden the day before and weren;t sure whter we wanted to fight the crowds to see the Japanese Gardens. The conceirge at the hotel said that if he were choosing ONE sight to see, it would be the Japanese Gardens. So, away we went.

To say this place is unbelievably beautiful, awe inspiring, spectacular and so on, actually falls short of the mark. Evidently the Japanese Ambassador to the USA said this is the most beautiful Jaranese garden outside of Japan. While I don't know if that is actually true, it can't be far off.

We could have spent an entire day just relaxing at each of the sites within the garden. It is so peaceful, beautiful and serene, its hard to believe it is in the middle of a huge city. I don't know how to describe it more, it is just so terrific, you need to go an see for yourself.

As for the hotel conceirge, he got it absolutely right!!

Set your GPS and get to these peaceful beautiful gardens. Quiet and elegant in its simplicity. Plan on spending 45 minutes to an hour. Take in the separate Rose Garden which is very close by and free.
