“fun within walking distance.”
Reviewed 13 June 2014

Shopping, restaurants, clubbing, people watching, boutique hotels, all in a fairly compact neighborhood. Public transit is excellent so even if you are on a long layover at the airport you have time to go down to the pearl and spend some of your time. The Saturday market is superb. I have reviewed many restaurants in the neighborhood so you can read about those as well.

“Recommend a stroll through the Pearl”
Reviewed 10 June 2014

Yes, there are lots of interesting opinions here on the Pearl from being an overpriced place to being a hot must see destination. I have been visiting the Pearl for over 15 years now and I look forward to spending about an hour walking around several blocks to see what's next.

Mandatory stops include Powell's and Whole Foods (no need to eat in an expensive restaurant when you are on a budget). Whole foods also has indoor seating for their sandwiches and beverages purchased on the property.

Also discovered a new store by the name of Cargo. Lots of fun, exotic items from around the world and just walking in the door will put a big smile on your face!

“Only if your tastes run to expensive food and doo dads”
Reviewed 28 May 2014

What is now called the Pearl District was a perfectly good warehouse district not too many years ago with jazz clubs, micro breweries and dark, moody streets. Developers changed all that and built an urban paradise for people from other urban areas who wanted to move to Portland, but still wanted their old urban settings. So, we got the Pearl District. Wander through the overpriced shops and bars, but if you want to really enjoy Portland get away from the Pearl District and discover the rest of the city.

Now, that said, Powell's Books on 11th and West Burnside has been there long before the developers moved in and made the place trendy. Go to Powells, see the old National Guard Armory in its restored glory (one of the good things the developers did) and pop your head in Jimmy Mack's for some great jazz. Then cross West Burnside into downtown and begin exploring the real city.
