Last time we went to Slappy Cakes they had the oven baked pancake with lemon curd and rhubarb, which was amazing! I was so bummed they didn't have it this time. BUT, the cheddar bacon biscuits (I think called bacon pops) were good, as was the bacon jam to spread on it.

I personally enjoy sitting at the bar where you can watch them cook all the food and ponder what meal to order next. It's also much easier to get a seat faster, if you're willing to sit at the bar. However, if you have kids the bigger tables are definitely for you.

I took my kids here not telling them about the special type of restaurant this is. They were so surprised to learn that we get to make our own pancakes. There are so many possible combinations of toppings. We also had to try the peanut butter batter. I had slappy cakes make one peanut butter and chocolate chip pancake instead of buying a whole bottle of batter. It was so good. We could have eaten a whole bottle of the batter. We went around 1:15 which I was told is perfect timing because there's usually a wait and we didn't have any wait at all.

Flip over having fun with your family? Love pancakes? Candied bacon? This may be the DIY restaurant for you!

Tables can be hard to get. When we went, the line was out the door. Once you get your table, don't relax. You are on the clock. Note the hot griddle in the middle of your table. This is your work station.

Service can take a while when it's crowded but don't get so bored that you touch the hot griddle. Instead, focus on what you will create! Slappy Cakes encourages you to Instagram your best pancake art.

Next, choose your batter. Choose from regular buttermilk, vegan, chocolate, whole grain or peanut butter. It will be delivered to your table in a squeeze bottle. Now pick some add-ins for your batter including apples, chocolate chips, bananas, raisins, blueberries, mangoes and coconut. Or add savory items like bacon and sausage, chorizo sausage, ham, cheddar or white cheese, eggs, mushrooms and onions.

What do you like on top of your cakes? Maple syrup may seem boring here but it is a choice. You can also top your treats with peanut butter, apple sauce, chocolate sauce, honey, lemon filling, whipped cream and cream fraiche.

Now the fun begins. You squeeze your batter onto the grill and add in your fillings. Wait. Wait. Patience. When the cake starts to bubble, flip it! Finish the other side, top it and eat. Repeat until batter is exhausted.

Don't want to do the work? Slappy Cakes also has plated breakfasts you can order with a side of candied bacon. There are also non-breakfast food items. The best part of ordering here is that you only need to feel guilty about the calories because the food is locally sourced ingredients. Also, Slappy Cakes emphasizes sustainable business practices and community involvement.

Tip: If you are tired of cooking for your family and just want luxury service, this may not be for you. My family tried every trick including burning their cakes to get me to cook for them. It didn't work. They had to do their own flips.

In the US, located in Maui, HI and Portland, OR. Also in Singapore, Japan and the Philippines.

This is such a fun place. We love drawing fun pancakes and filling them with delicious combinations- my favorite was sausage, goat cheese and honey.

The service can be hit or miss- if all you order is the DIY pancakes they tend to let you, you know, do your own thing. Which is great until you need a refill. But they're always polite and in a good mood. We really love this place.
