Came here with my 10 year old and had a blast! The pancakes were good but of course it’s all about getting to create pancake art :)

The only downside was the long wait to get a table but it was worth it.

The concept is neat. My kids enjoyed making pancakes. We were in a group of 6. We tried the buttermilk, peanut butter and the lemon poppy seed (seasonal) batters. The buttermilk and lemon poppy seed were great. The peanut butter batter was bland at best. The lemon curd and blueberries were by far the best combination. The sides are a bit overpriced. $3 for 1 pieces of bacon.
We first tried to go on a Saturday morning but found an hour wait within 30 minutes of their opening. While waiting, we walked to the waffle window and had a lovely breakfast and were finished before slappy cakes were ready for us. We cancelled slappy cakes. We went again on a weekday morning. We had no difficulty going on a Wednesday morning. Plan ahead if you want to go on a weekend. The place fills up quickly and it takes awhile for tables to turn over as everyone is making their own pancakes.

We went on Father's day so there was a bit of a wait, but they had chalk to draw on the sidewalk outside the restaurant which was quirky and fun. You can order pancake batter to cook on the griddle at your table with all different ingredients to add. We both had the Slappy's Benedict which was delicious! This is a fun family place that we would certainly return to when we are in Portland again!

Got there a little before 10 and had a short wait before we were seated at a long "community" table. My nephew ordered the chocolate batter along with peanut butter and maple syrup. I shared the lemon poppy seed seasonal batter with my sister. Each serving of batter gives you about 5 decent size pancakes. If you are doing some designing you should have plenty to share and enjoy. Syrup is on the table so unless you need real maple syrup skip ordering as a topping. Batter, fixins" & toppings are all separate prices so see if you can share because they do give you a lot. Be prepared to help the little ones cook as you do this at the griddle in the middle of the table. Let them be creative but remind them they need to still flip their pancakes.

Slappy Cakes is as fun as you can make it. It's a make-your-own-pancake restaurant, and each table has a griddle built in so that you can craft something just for you. They give you options of several pancake batter flavors (one plain vegan/gluten-free one, 4 or 5 non-vegan ones), bunches of "fixins" and toppings, and multiple side options as well.

We split a single tube of the vegan batter between the two of us, and we each ordered a side as well. The server told us each tube makes 4 to 5 pancakes, but that was difficult to measure for us because we exclusively made pancakes in funny shapes. The pancakes were good, but your enjoyment will come down to how much fun you have making pancakes. If you're looking for a complete, thought out breakfast experience you would be better off ordering from their pre-set menu or going to a different restaurant. I also wish there were multiple flavors of vegan batter, but you can customize the flavor plenty with the add-ons.
