I have stayed at The Edgefield, another wonderful hotel owned by the McMenamins chain, but wanted something in downtown Portland for this weekend trip. Our plane was late so we did not get to the hotel until after 11. Al's Den, the historic pub downstairs, was busy so we had a few pints, a salad and a great cheese plate at the bar attached to the Zeus Cafe. Delicious. It was after midnight when we got back to the hotel, and when we asked the desk clerk how late the soaking pool was open was open he replied "How late do you want it open?" Sweet! We soaked and slept well. Breakfast at the Zeus Cafe was fantastic. A great stay.

I have stayed at almost all of the McMenamins hotels and the room and experience is what I expected but I just wish they would get better mattresses! With a new hotel I expected a little more comfort. It is a great location but for a little over a hundred there are better options Downtown. I still love their flagship location Edgefield but I probably won't return to the Crystal.

We stayed in a cheaper room so used the communal bathrooms. Having stayed at hotels with shared bathrooms before we were fine with it and pleasantly surprised with the cleanliness of the bathrooms. We did have a sink in our room too. The room was a decent size for two people - bed, small table with 2 chairs, sink and that's about it. Not really a room to spend your time in but a great place to stay if you want to explore Portland. We had just moved to Portland and were waiting to move into out apartment when we stayed here for 3 days. We had a car but left it parked most of the time because this hotel is in the Pearl District (breweries, shopping, etc.) The Whole Foods across the street was a nice place to buy premade food and save a little on eating out. The salt water soaking pool in the basement was fantastic. We went there a lot.

Took my wife and two older teenage sons to McMenamin's Crystal Hotel over Christmas.

The hotel was nice, except for a few things. We stayed for four nights, which is way too long at this hotel. An overnight would have been fine.

There were no TV's, which I knew going in, so it wasn't a deal breaker. There also wasn't anywhere to put clothes away. There was a small rack to hang clothes, but no dresser or shelves of any kind, to put away other clothes. There were two nightstands with small drawers, but we basically were living out of our suitcase. There was no hairdryer, but we were able to get one from the front desk. There was no coffee maker, either. There was a heater, high on the wall, that blew directly onto our faces when we were in bed.

My wife and I were in a room, at the narrow end of the hotel, and had our own bathroom. Our boys, in the room next door, had to use the communal bathrooms. Fortunately, they were right outside our doors, so that wasn't a big issue. They did have a sink in their room.

The restaurant (Zues's Cafe), which took up most of the bottom floor, had pretty good food (although, a little pricey). The staff in the restaurant, as well as the hotel, were very friendly and attentive.

The saltwater soaking pool, in the basement, was great. My wife and I were down there every night.

There was a fair amount to do in the area, especially if you like breweries and trying different types of ales.

I would go back to the Crystal hotel for an overnight stay, but not for any longer than that.

Another great Mcminnemins experience! Awesome simply said. Staff was great, food was awesome, rooms are fun, and great location. Saw some really good live music and enjoyed our stay to the fullest!

The Crystal Hotel is in a great neighborhood, The Pearl District, with lots of good shopping, galleries, and restaurants in walking distance. The staff was incredibly helpful, going above and beyond the call of duty, printing directions, marking maps, looking things up, printing boarding passes, etc. This hotel is unique, in an old building with lots of character and charm. The soaking pool in the basement is fun. The one time we went to hear music in the basement, the band was awful, but it's a nice idea to be able to have a place to go for a drink and some entertainment right on site. The room was comfortable except that all the lighting was mood lighting, with low wattage colored bulbs, inadequate to read by. When we mentioned that on the way out, we were told there were reading lamps we could have borrowed but who thinks to ask for that? and should you have to? Also, no shelving in the bathroom. The thermostat was not particularly user friendly either, as it was hard to tell what the icons meant and a card with some basic directions would have been nice. The restaurant on the ground floor is quite good and we walked to two fabulous restaurants in the neighborhood, Irving Street Kitchen and Andina. Powell's famous 4 story bookstore is one block away.

This was my first stay at a McMenamins hotel and I enjoyed my 2-day visit. Staff was very helpful, and the ambiance of the room and the hotel itself was as described in other comments. This was my first time in a lodging where you shared a bathroom, but it didn't bother me. There was no TV, the radio is a typically cheapo model (prevents theft), and the thin walls which allowed sounds from adjoining rooms are the factors which preclude a 5-star rating.

Room Tip: Try for a 4th floor room.
